En cette dernière journée de juillet 2018, le Musard 29 SMART atteint le port du Palais à Belle Ile. Comme le niveau de marée ne permet pas de franchir immédiatement l'écluse pour rejoindre le bassin des Salines, nous sommes contraints au demi-tour pour nous amarrer à une bouée devant le port. Et comme d'habitude en été, c'est la cohue à l'ouverture du pont, et tous les bateaux se donnent en spectacle à la grande joie des touristes de passage... Unser Deck nimmt langsam gestalt an. Der alte Belag kommt runter und es wird neu grundiert. Ruben ist diesmal wieder eine ganze Woche an Bord und hat sich viel vorgenommen. Es wird fleißig geschliffen und geflext, solange bis der blanke Stahl zu sehen ist. Leider wird dadurch auf deutlich, dass unter den Gummiresten des Teakdecks sich immer mehr kleine Rost-Löcher befinden. Aber kein Grund aufzugeben! Wir machen weiter und fangen an die Installation der Fenster vorzubereiten. Hierzu werden die Fensterrahmen und die Rahmen der Bordwand geschliffen und neu grundiert. Bei 10 Fenstern ist das ganz schön viel Arbeit, aber es macht auch Spaß ein tolles Ergebnis zu sehen. :-) Während das Deck sandgestrahlt wird, mache ich einen Tag Pause und entdecke den Strand von Bibione. We just bought a sail boat in Turkey! We found it difficult to find any information about the process and we've already had people asking us about it and request a video. So we have done our best to go through the process as we experienced it in the hope it will help others who may be considering buying a boat in Europe. There's quite a bit of information so we split the video into 2 parts. Clashing with customs – We’re stunned & still in shock After we leave Symi we head SE to Rhodes the largest of the Dodecanese islands. Rhodes old town sits behind a solid stone wall with the castle as its main feature. We choose to anchor off the harbour with great friends Carl & Jenny on S/Y Dream who have been great boating buddies over the past few days. One of the Seven Wonders of the World ‘Colossus of Rhodes’ is said to have stood over the harbour entrance here, not sure about that but who cares, it’s great history and brings thousands of tourists onto this beautiful Island. Hiring a car we head to the pretty town of Lindos before once again setting sail, this time back to our adopted country of Turkey. Hardstand Boat Life is Hard It's A Hard Life On The Hardstand. Hardstand Time! We haul DT out of the water at Norsand Boatyard in Whangarei and begin a week of boat jobs. Some tasks are annual maintenance and some are in preparation for our upcoming passage to Tonga. Our antifoul will survive another few months, but that doesn't mean we get to relax! Engine service, prop and sail drive antifoul, some new stainless steel bits and pieces, anchor chain maintenance and lots of new supplies and toys delivered. A busy, but very productive week. Once back in the water we head off to the Town Basin Marina in Whangarei to restock the provisions and get ready to welcome the Hegs onboard. Fiona Tackles four Canals and Two Ocean Crossings. This is the video of a cruise made while the book was in preparation, and is not described in the text. We crossed the Atlantic to Scotland, crossed into Denmark and cruised the Baltic. Sailing across the Bay of Biscay Fiona was badly damaged by heavy weather and due to failure of the welds on mounting brackets we were lucky not to lose the bow platform and probably the mast. Emergency repairs were carried out in Portugal. Fiona’s Greenland Saga, ( Chapter 8 ). This was a summer cruise made in 2008. The plan was to explore the Greenland west coast and Davis Straight in preparation for a possible transit of the Northwest Passage, which we did pull off in 2009 to 2010. We switched crew in the Azores but one of the new crew became ill and we diverted to Newfoundland so she could get medical attention. In Greenland, we saw many Inuit returning to port with their boats piled high with carcasses – food for the coming winter. I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.
