Hauled out primarily to remove antifoul that was too expensive to do in USA. Also change fridge keel cooling system from Isotherm to Frigoboat; removed varnish and much much more. s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) is out the water again, to complete the works on the hull that could not be done in Herrington, MD, USA. These were the tasks: - Chemically stripped the antifoul back to the original barrier coat, applied InterProtect and antifoul. Managed to get back to the original waterline mark. Stripping by soda blast in the USA was too expensive plus the outside temperatures for re-painting were too low. - Install 3 new Frigoboat keel coolers, better suited to warm waters than our current Isotherm ones. Brazing of the pipes was needed. No one in the USA would do us that service. - Strip the Coelan “varnish” off the gunwale following the damage by the collision in New England. The intention was to re-varnish, but the constant random rain showers put us off. And debated long and hard whether to re-varnish in consideration of the necessary maintenance in these climates. Sadly, we ended up leaving it bare teak, …. for now. - Tried to have the vang serviced again, but he riggers did not have the parts. So we instead renewed the hydraulic oil in the entire system hoping that would fix the minor oil leak. - Installed a new cockpit light with a LED strip in the underside of the boom. - Put in new teak plugs to the coach roof handrails. - …plus a few other little bit and pieces. All with the usual amount of frustrations, and attention to detail, like we do! 11-23 Dec 2018

So this week, we tackled the the engine bay/compartment & grinded up a storm, fiber-glassed up a tornado & filleted up a earthquake. Getting that engine bay spick and span and giving our soon to be refurbished engine a very comfy place to sleep.. so she doesn't get upset and die on us. We also recieved our new stainless railings! Then we spoiled ourselves with a nice NYE break and had a good mini party with the family. Friday 4th January was meant to be the practice racing day for the 2019 Tornado World Championships Powered by Candida Stationery, however with 30 knots blowing across the race course, the boats never left the shore. Nunca passei tanto frio. O natal mais natalino da minha vida foi à -7ºC, no auge do inverno sueco. Não conhecia nada. Viajei para Estocolmo para ver meus amigos e encontrar as raizes da minha avó. Encontrei muito mais que isso: um povo frio mas acolhedor, que recebe com biscoitos de gengibre e braços abertos cada novo estranho em casa. O mar e os lagos congelados expulsam os veleiros, que são obrigados a ir pro seco, e os planos d’agua se tornam lugar de patinar, passear com o cachorro ou correr com seu bebê. Como os bebês lidam com o frio eu não sei, mas eu confesso que senti pacas. Espero que gostem desse pedacinho da minha vida :)

Sailing into Marovo Lagoon through the beautiful Mbili passage we were greeted with the most amazing colours! All the different shades of greens and blues were on display. The time we spent anchored outside Checke, a tiny village deep in the lagoon I will always remember. Such friendly and inviting people just wanting interaction. I made a bond with one kid called Joe who I taught how to steer and control my boat and when we left he told me it was his goal to become a ships captain. When stylish Italian design meets a solid yacht builder with a strong sense of pride in their products, great things can happen as I witnessed in my latest visit to the Mengi Yay shipyard in Turkey.
