Vernon Deck is a great example of jumping head first into sailing and just figuring it out as you go along. He learned by watching sailing videos and doing local racing as crew, then purchased a yacht, spent 3 weeks on preparation, then untied and departed. His first 3 seasons were spent sailing the 780nm passage between Brisbane and Cairn on the Australian East Coast on a S&S 34 before buying a much faster Sayer 37 yacht and heading offshore to Solomon Islands, then onto Papua New Guinea and then Indonesia. After a lifetime of adventure and earning a living as a sports photographer, Vernon now spends half of each year in Austria earning a living and the other half onboard his yacht, cruising his way north through the Pacific. Race for Water landed at Port-Moselle (Noumea) for his 15th stopover of the odyssey and was welcome with enthusiasm by the WE CE CA group. The Race for Water Foundation is dedicated to the preservation of the water and the oceans in particular. Today, seriously under threat from plastic pollution, it is imperative that this essential resource for life is protected. To prevent plastic waste from reaching the waterways and oceans by developing social models and business models that give value to plastic waste and hence encourage its collection. After the dinghy disaster in Ibiza the kids surprised us with their ability to spring into action and make dinner while we dealt with the problem. A few days later we found the footage of their.. inspired approach. Leaving Ibiza, we headed for the Spanish mainland, and met up with friends as we coastal hopped our way south. Our trips ashore were made more challenging without a proper dinghy so we had to draft the kids dinghy and paddle-board into action. We had an awesome final sail into Almerimar where we celebrated with fish n chips, hung up our flip flops and prepared to try Spanish school for the kids and prepare a long boat maintenance list! We sail north from The Sir James Smith Islands to Hamilton Island, with brief stops at Thomas and Shaw Islands. We have some Percy Island honey for one of the residents and have a look back at the Pearling Lugger industry.
In this episode we sail to Inousses, just off the coast of Chios. The island where the Greek Shipping industry tycoons reside. We get a pod of dolphins around the boat as we arrive, and take a trip around the town. Some locals explain how the sundial in the village square works. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you found it informative or entertaining please give it a thumbs as it helps get YouTube to promote it outside of the existing subscribers. I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

Today we share our first voyage on Archer. After a winter "on the hard," we launch the boat and sailed her off-shore from Maryland to Rhode Island. Joined by two friends, we pushed Archer to see what she could do and hit a top speed of 18 knots (15.2 knots recorded on video, which you'll see)! This boat can run! More coming, so check back soon! ABOUT US: We are a family of five sailing around the world on a performance catamaran named "Archer" and sharing our adventures in family-friendly episodes on YouTube! OUR ROUTE: We departed the Boston/Cape Cod area of the United States and sailed down to the Caribbean and through the Panama Canal. We have dealt with massive repairs in the South Pacific, the Coronavirus lock down in New Zealand, a Category 5 Cyclone in Fiji, and now we are cruising in Australia. OUR PAST: You may remember us as "SV Honeymoon?" Ten years ago ("before kids"), we sailed a Lagoon 380 named Honeymoon halfway around the world to Sydney, Australia. Along the way we shared our experiences via YouTube and, by happenstance, created one of the very first "sailing channels." We also realized what an incredible experience we were having and that someday we wanted to do it again, only this time with kids. FAQ: More questions? Check out our Frequently Asked Questions page on our website or answers to many of your questions in this 40 minute episode: https://www.the-sailing-family.com/faq https://youtu.be/jBzTUVZ5oG4 PLEASE COMMENT!: As a channel with kids on-board, we are required to actively monitor all comments, but we still want to hear from you. Tell us what you think! THANKS for watching all. Subscribe and never miss an episode! Music by Dyalla - Bottom of the Ocean

See the film of the 74th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. After being sent off in typical splendour from Sydney Harbour, the 85-strong fleet travels south along the New South Wales coast before braving unpredictable Bass Strait. The 628-nautical mile adventure continues down the east coast of Tasmania to Storm Bay where it turns and heads towards the Derwent River for the final stretch to the finish. Wild Oats XI took line honours for a record ninth time, holding off three other Super Maxis in one of the tightest finishes in race history, while Tasmanian entry Alive was overall Tattersall Cup winner on handicap. Both yacht owners received a Rolex timepiece. Discover more https://on.rolex.com/2ZoQRWo

Hurra! This week we decided to finally do something about that crappy ceiling in the salon. We have been contemplating different materials to use on the overhead and haven't found one that we really liked. I like the way a white beadboard looks, however, most of the material you buy is a compressed pressed board that is not good with moisture I have tried some thin wood alternatives but they have been a bit too thin and flexible so they 'sagged' between attach points. Several people have reached out via comments and social media to ask where I got the lights we used. Here is a link to them on Amazon. They are inexpensive and seem to work well. We have a few spares because if they go out, they are cheaper than replacing a bulb in most marine lights. Get them here on Amazon - https://amzn.to/2GopmFq We finally tested and settled on a material. In this video, you will see how we tabbed in supports to hold the new material. we do some woodwork, fiberglass work and Deb provides an update on what she has been doing with the interior. The work is coming together but we are getting down to the wire for sure. In this episode I finish the lashings on the rig, hoist the jib & contemplate the enormous task of getting the 175kg/385lb mainsail out of its bag and bent onto the boat. All of course solo and with only muscle power to assist! I also spend a little time thinking through the jobs ahead of me before departure day (we are T minus 24hrs in this video) & reflect a little on how well the boat is put together and much I have yet to learn about her. In this video, the crew of Sailing Catamaran Element are taking a well deserved rest from sailing the Mediterranean and have Sherrie's parents visit in their Winter home of Finike Marina. Together, they all travel inland to the stunning natural travertine pools of Pamukkale in Turkey, used by the ancient romans as healing baths. Then the crew of Element all drive down the coast to Antalya and visit one of the World's largest Aquariums. Halloween descends on the sailors of Finike and the crew of Sailing Catamaran Element teach the local kids about carving Jack-o'-laterns and trick or treating for candies with the assistance of local cruisers in the marina. #Sailing #Catamaran #SailingTurkey #SailingCatamaranElement Time Stamps: 00:00 - Intro 00:14 - Foreword by Shaun 01:17 - Pamukkale Pools, Turkey 06:21 - Hieropolis Ruins 08:10 - Sarcophogi and Statue Museum 09:38 - Walking down Pamukkale Pools 11:01 - Denizli Rooster 11:13 - Ice Cream in Turkey 12:42 - Antalya Aquarium 18:06 - Halloween in Finike Marina Music: 08:00 - "The Emperor's Army" by 14:27 - Follow our boat on NOFOREIGNLAND: https://www.noforeignland.com/boat/4981017095962624
**NOW SOLD** Dream Catcher is a Dufour 38 Classic that is now listed exclusively for sale with YOTI. https://www.yoti.com.au/listing/beneteau-oceanis-38-cruiser Launched in 1998, Dream Catcher is a beautiful example from Dufour which is a name famous among European cruising sailors. Dufour yachts have a reputation for being seagoing passagemakers. The builder has a philosophy that stresses a combination of performance and comfort under all manner of weather conditions. The 38's under body, with its lead fin keel and fine entries, combines speed and stability with fingertip control, even when reefed in heavy weather. Dream Catcher has a streamlined deckhouse and has all halyards and sail controls leading aft to the cockpit where there are self-tailing Lewmar winches either side of the companionway. The cockpit is comfortable, fitted with Princess Seats, and the reverse transom allows easy access as a swimming platform and boarding area. All cockpit covers, Targa cover, boom bag, hatch and rail covers were new in 2017. Dream Catcher is a three cabin, two head layout with holding tanks forward and aft. The companionway leads into a large, well-ventilated saloon with a dinette to starboard and a slightly curved galley counter to port, with stove, refrigerator and lockers and a well-equipped navigation station with hinged chart table and a bench seat that lies aft of the dinette. The interior is of high quality, finished with a white deckhead and veneered mahogany, a Dufour trademark. Dream Catcher is also fitted with an Autohelm 5000 auto pilot, an Autohelm ST30 Tri Data pack, multi display and log as well as an extensive list of safety equipment and spare parts. The standing rigging was replaced in 2010 and a maintenance inspection and general repairs carried out in 2018. House batteries were replaced in 2015 and the start battery was new in 2018. Contact YOTI for further details and to arrange inspection on Pittwater (02) 9960 6222 info@yoti.com.au

This video is about Sailing French Polynesia, The Societies 1, Ep 50A, Off the Starboard Hull in a Lagoon 400 S2 catamaran A Canadian Couple from Vancouver Island, BC, Canada left from Parksville July 21, 2016 to sail around the world in their Lagoon 400 S2 catamaran. See how they get along, who they meet and where they end up going. They have a 10 year estimated time line, but a very open agenda. Our last video about arriving in Hiva Oa was in April 2018. We landed in Makemo in May and visited 5 other atolls, Kauehi, Fakarava (great night shark dive in the south pass), Toau, Apataki (huge surf) and the biggest atoll Rangiroa. Then we were in the societies (Tahiti, Huahine, Tahaa, Bora Bora, Maupiti and Maupihaa) which was a nice blend of atoll and island. Maupiti was our favourite place. Then we went to Swarrow, a nature reserve with 2 resident rangers in the Cook Islands. Then we went to the island country of Niue with unlimited underwater visibility, pristine coral, baby humpback whales, caverns and chasms. Breathtaking! From there, we traveled to Neiafu (with dozens of protected anchorages), Pangai in the Haipai region and Nuku’alofa, all 3 regions in Tonga. Next was Minerva Reef for 20 hours before we embarked on the notorious passage to NZ. Since Nov 12 2018, we have been in Opua New Zealand and are loving the friendly people, the lovely Bay of Islands and the access to materials and shops to do some boat projects.

We Headed to the Keys, under the channel 5 bridge, done with the Gulf, up to Miami, and on to the Bahamas, across the infamous gulf stream! Hadn't planned on West End (originally Bimini), but the southerly wind and sticking with a buddy boat made it a decent choice. We were unprepared for communication/t-mobile issues and unfamiliar with the area. We made it thru what we thought would be the most difficult bit of the journey, learning as we went. All seems worse with exhaustion! Ended the trip with a little drama/emotions and ready for a break at a marina! Watch as our kids (and their parents) adjust to live-aboard cruising life!
I set off for a 15 days Solo passage to Indonesia from Kavieng, PNG. I have some great sailing, hit the usual squalls that give me a pounding but also cool me down and catch a few fish on route to a stop-over at Hermit Islands. I anchor right at the head of Manta Pass, aptly named indeed! I swim each day off my boat and get my mind blown by the huge graceful Mantas circling underneath. One of my most memorable experiences to date. Enjoy! #sailing #MantaRay #Learningbydoing A link to a recent podcast I did: https://www.oceansailingpodcast.com/podcast Become part of the crew and support my videos: https://www.patreon.com/vernondeck https://paypal.me/vernondeck?locale.x=en_US Please visit: http://www.vernondeck.com to see more work. In this Episode; Part 1 We begin exploring the amazing Belizean Barrier Reef and the tiny Cayes and Islands dotted all over the area. Navigation here is tricky to say the least with Charts that are over one hundred years old, reefs have grown, sand bars have shifted. Slow careful navigation here is a must! Some anchorages are over 60 feet deep as depths climb rapidly to protected anchorages amongst the mangrove Cayes. We welcome our first guests aboard to share the experience of learning to sail a big Cat and what it's really like living a life on the Sea. A week long adventure of learning to sail, getting a taste of what it’s like living on a catamaran in the Caribbean, how we make our power and our water, and how we provision, cook, diesel maintenance and more… all while exploring the amazing Belizean Barrier Reef! We had a great time, made some great friends and shared our lives a step past our videos... They came as strangers to us and left as great friends, although they had a pretty good idea of who we are before the came Lol! This video shares some of the highlights of that first trip… I hope it doesn’t feel like an advertisement, it wasn’t made in that fashion. Simply an opportunity to share with the world, more of the adventure, and that’s what we are all about… Sharing the Adventure! Please SUBSCRIBE and tap on the NOTIFICATION BELL! You too can spend an all inclusive week with us aboard our catamaran Saltair3 learning how to live a life on the sea and leave a small environmental foot print, how to prepare, repair, provision, catch fish and lobster, how to safely check into foreign countries and learn to sail a Big Cat, or just sit back, relax and enjoy being aboard Saltair3 in the warm and beautiful Caribbean Sea.
