On this episode of Sailing on a Whim, we travel from Minnesota to Florida to buy a sailboat! We finally get to see Whim in person, meet the current owner, and have a marine survey completed. Of course, we also run into some roadblocks like RUNNING AGROUND for the first time! This crazy adventure started in early 2018 as we started researching how to learn to sail, buy a boat, outfit her, and take off for a life on the open seas! There has been a huge learning curve trying to make all of this happen and we want to share with you everything that we have learned and have some fun along the way. We are excited (and a little nervous!) to share this journey with you. We hope that you learn a little from our experiences and maybe inspire you to make changes to live the life you want! —————————————————— SUBSCRIBE & FOLLOW https://www.sailingonawhim https://www.youtube.com/sailingonawhim https://www.facebook.com/sailingonawhim https://www.instagram.com/sailing_on_a_whim https://www.twitter.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— CONSIDERING BECOMING A PATRON https://www.patreon.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— GEAR: Cannon EOS Rebel SL2 - https://amzn.to/2y2Hty1 Cannon Powershot G7x Mark II - https://amzn.to/2S6rOVu DJI Mavic Air - https://amzn.to/2W2OYgz GoPro Hero5 - https://amzn.to/2S8FizU Fantasea Line FG7X II - https://amzn.to/2xSuY8q Rode DDG-GO Deadcat - https://amzn.to/2Y4AT4G DJI Mavic Pro Plantinum - https://amzn.to/3eU5tUT —————————————————— RECOMMENDED READING: Learn to Sail – https://sailingonawhim.com/learn-to-sail Cruising Life – https://sailingonawhim.com/cruising-life Maintenance & Repair – https://sailingonawhim.com/maintenance-%26-repair Inspiration & Adventure – https://sailingonawhim.com/inspiration-%26-adventure —————————————————— MUSIC FROM EPIDEMIC SOUND —————————————————— The Abacos area of the Bahamas was devastated by Hurricane Dorian in September 2019. I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

This week the girls take over the filming for video content. Buckle up, folks. This video is all about life aboard a boat through the eyes of our daughter. :) The girls make strawberry jelly with a pressure cooker (Instant Pot/Instapot), and you can see 'most' of the steps required to do so. Chazzy (13-year-old) makes sugar cookies on board the boat and gets caught eating more of the raw dough when grandma had already said to stop. We have an unbelievably candid discussion about energy drinks, drugs, coffee, and additions. The safe and wise Chazzy gives her point of view, and sometimes the younger family members make the most sense. I continue my time in New Jersey taking care of my dad for a much more extended period than initially planned. I introduce you to CoCo the canine that has trained my dad so well over the years. I also head over to the seashore and see the surfers out, enjoying the higher winds and breaking waves. I hope you enjoy this hodgepodge video focused on a host of different topics all through the lens of Whitney, which I tend to find very funny. See you all next week when we spend some more time perfecting a cup of coffee and making smoothies to cut down on some calories by having those in place of breakfast. I have gained a few pounds up here in Jersey and want to get that heading in the other direction. Team Racing has the Hinman Trophy, match racing has the Prince of Whales, but now, the Annapolis Yacht Club is pioneering a new event to combine multiple team events. They are calling it the “3-2-1 Challenge”. A provided fleet of local J22s and J30s provide a platform for invited clubs, academic institutions and associations to compete in teams of 6 people. A rotation sheet mixes each discipline as a squad of race committee members, umpires, change boats and a boatswain manage two courses. On the team racecourse, the 6 team members sail J22s double-handed, 3 on 3 with no kites. The next flight entertains the team of 6 sailing J22s triple handed, 2 on 2 with spinnakers. On the adjacent racecourse, a second race committee runs short windward leeward courses with a gate for the Match racing discipline where all 6 team members take on boat handling and maneuvers as one.

On an uncompromising, very much one-sided race course off Mahón, Quantum Racing proved the top scoring boat at the Menorca 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week to take the overall lead at the first circuit regatta of 2019 by one single point. After missing Day 2’s scheduled races due to the lack of breeze, the third day was a gift with the bright spring sunshine and 10-15 knots of wind. But with the race area located to the east of the entrance to Mahón’s expansive natural harbour – one of the world’s biggest – the topography upwind created a natural deflection, creating a one-sided course that placed a gilt-edged premium on starting perfectly and getting to the right as smartly as possible. Regatta leaders Azzurra had made a dream start to their season. A second and a win on the first day was swiftly followed by another victory in the first of today’s three races. A textbook start on the signal boat end of the line, a quick tack to the right and the team from the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda led all the way around the course, extending their lead to eight points at the top of the 11-boat fleet. But, as is nearly always the case, when there is such pressure on one side of the course and off the line, it is close to impossible to repeat the same plan time and again. Azzurra were held up by Sled at the start of the next race and their strategy was compromised. Provezza got away to lead while Azzurra rounded fifth dropping places on each subsequent leg to finish seventh. A mainsheet winch problem just before the start of Race 5, the third contest of the day, left Azzurra flat footed and nearly last off the line. The dream, 2,1,1, was rudely awoken to a harsh 17pts reality, just as perennial rivals Quantum Racing hit their straps for a glamour 4,2,1 today. It is a rainy day and it seem like there is a leak in the aft cabin, I trace the leak to the steering pedestal and try to find where the water is entering, but as always a bit tricky. In this video I use the napkin trick to trace down the leak.

Black Point has quickly become one of our favorite stops in the Exumas so we’re happy to spend an extra few days here while we wait for Lorraine’s mom to return to the island to get our hands on some of her famous bread. We venture to the neighboring island of Bitter Guana to meet the prehistoric iguanas that live here (it’s a protected habitat for them so visitors are encouraged not to touch or harass them). It’s really cool to see them up close, living their best lives on the beautiful beaches of this island. They aren’t as gross or aggressive as the famous swimming pigs, so if you have the chance to go say hi to these guys, we definitely recommend it! Before we head to our next destination, we’ve got to take care of the not-so-fun chores that come with living aboard a sailboat. We do some laundry (hooray for clean, DRY clothes!), find water to fill up our water cans, and Keegan changes the zinc (sacrificial anodes used to protect the metals of the boat), with the help from a couple Ramoras. ::FOLLOW US:: Instagram: @sailingsummerfriday Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingsummerfriday/ Website: https://sailingsummerfriday.com ::MUSIC:: Song: MBB - Beach Music Promoted by Vlog No Copyright Music Video Link: https://youtu.be/bfjxyOtpvlA Song: Ehrling - You And Me Music Promoted by Chill Royalty Free Music Artist SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/ehrling Video Link: https://youtu.be/eFO5m1hN8CA Song: NOWË - Under the Sun Music Promoted by Chill Royalty Free Music Artist SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/nowemusic Video Link: https://youtu.be/k5_8sItHFT4 Song: Ikson - Spring Music Promoted by Vlog No Copyright Music Video Link: https://youtu.be/xSZU2XMUAYY

Well, it has been two years and we have had questions on how our plants are doing from Canterbury Farms Nursery. Yes, we love the results, but there are things we would have changed. Releasing baby turtles in Zihuatenejo, surviving the Tehuantepec and the Papagayos, an afternoon poolside at Gordie’s and movie night at Coconutz in Playa del Cocos…. The only thing better than anchoring at Ballena Bay Costa Rica after a full and beautiful day running south along the coast? Doing it with a small flotilla of fellow cruisers from the Panama Posse… The next day? A dinghy run up the estuary, with howler monkeys in full throat, and a picnic on a sugar sand beach with palm trees leaning out over the water, providing shade for the cold beer and snacks with some of the coolest people on the water. That’s the Panama Posse. Not only did we meet great people traveling the same coastline but the shared intel on anchorages and check-in procedures was invaluable!! We would highly recommend it to anyone choosing to travel this route.” Marc & Laura SV Liquid “Participating in the Panama Posse was like being part of a family and less like a typical rally. We met some of the most wonderful people whom we will be life long friends. We gained information in real time about both anchorages and weather that was invaluable. Flashback! We were married on September 9th, 2017 and went on a honeymoon afterwards to the beautiful island of St. Lucia. What a beautiful place! One day, we decided to take out one of the Hobie Cat beach catamarans. This was the very first time we ever sailed together! We left the cove where our resort was located and probably went too far, but had a nice afternoon sailing and snorkeling in the clear blue sea! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We can't produce quality inspirational content indefinitely without the support of our fans. Sailboat Haul Out Tips and Preparations (Preps) for a major refit in Richards Bay, South Africa at the Zululand Yacht Club.(1 big Boat on 1 small Travel Lift- Patrick Childress Sailing #39) Upon arrival in Richards Bay, South Africa, we prepare our blue water sailboat, SV Brick House for another boatyard haulout for boat Maintenance, sailboat upgrades, and of course new bottom paint. We will be doing lots of boat work and sailboat renovations here. Patrick Childress shows how he cleans the boat, tests the water for drinking, kills the invading ants before they infest our boat, and then gets us ready to re-fit the boat in to a travel lift that is a little too small to accommodate our rigging. We unattached the forestays to fit on the travel lift, and Patrick demonstrates the best way to do this without taking off the sails, or disassembling the entire profurl roller furling drum. Hauling a sailboat out of the water, even on a travel lift that is a bit too small doesn’t have to be chaotic or cause for concern, but there are a few things to get ready before hauling a boat out of the water for a long sailboat refit. Here is the ant poison we have carried with us around the world that has worked 99.9% of the time with ants. I recommend carrying a big supply of it because it’s sometimes hard to find! https://amzn.to/2YL0FrL ▬▬ FOLLOW ALONG! ▬▬ ✩ Instagram: http://www.Instagram.com/svBrickHouse ✩ Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/SYBrickhouse ✩ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/SVBrickhouse ✩ Our blog: :http://www.WhereIsBrickHouse.com ✩Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/PatrickChildress ✩Tshirts and other: https://www.WhereIsBrickHouse.com/store ✩Wish we were on Patreon? But there should be a checklist, what is needed, and the definition of a haul out facility near me. Whether a fiberglass boat or a wooden boat, all boats needs to be hauled out sooner or later. This doesn’t cover boat bottom painting prices, now how much does it cost to haul a boat, but it’s a good travel lift pre-haulout prepping video. How much to get a boat out of the water? This is a one owner boat with low hours. As always Bayliner's use of space is exceptional, and there is tonnes of storage on this boat. The cockpit layout is second to none in this size class, with flexibility to suit the casual fisherman, or the comfy lounger in your family! It comes on the galvanized trailer with surge brakes. The 5.7L 250HP Mercruiser package is reliable and economical and has been very well maintained since the engine replacement about 100 hours ago. This boat is raw water cooled. All the canvas and upholstery is in great shape and this little beaut is ready to hit the water! It comes complete with safety equipment, some life jackets, transom tie downs, etc – ready to go boating! Check out www.shuswapmarina.com for more pics.

With only a few days to go before we leave La Paz, Magnus builds a temporary gas locker extension out of pine. This will now mean that we can house the taller gas bottles which we have managed to find in Mexico. Wendy keeps on with the sewing tasks, working on the cockpit cushions. The gallery gets a workout with lots of preserving of the capsicum and tomatoes into relishes and sauces. Magnus continues to work on building the water maker and we fit the new enormous solar panel which doesn’t quite fit, so modifications have to be made to the gantry. Another productive week.
