Sailing From Fiji to New Zealand In this episode, we clear out of Fiji and set sail in some very boisterous conditions towards New Zealand. It's our roughest crossing yet. We make great speed but encounter some of the roughest seas we have ever sailed in. Even going to the toilet is a challenge! Five days later ,we are motoring in the smoothest conditions we have ever encountered in the South Pacific Ocean. We are greeted by dolphins and spectacular sunsets. Ocean sailing certainly keeps you on your toes. We arrive into Opua, NZ after 6 days and 22 hours at sea having done an average speed of 6.5 knots. After sailing from Australia to New Caledonia the 30 boats who joined the "Down Under Rally" for 2019 anchored at L'Escapade on Ilot Maitre in the southern lagoon close to Noumea. The resort is a stunning location with bungalows raised on stilts over the sea. This was to be the base for the End of Rally Party and Awards presentation.

I go in search of a waterfall! Sailing 20 miles over to the Island of Batanta I then spend the day searching up and down rivers and mangroves swamps meeting locals along the way. I didn't find the waterfall but had a great day none the less. Next day I sailed over to Sorong in order to fill my australian gas bottles. They were so scared! We sailed South a few miles on a peaceful downwind run under genoa alone and the next day got in the water for some diving. I (Billy) couldn't help myself and had to give Sierra and Jeff a little scare. We found an unmarked fish trap with a ton of big grouper in it and decided it was best to leave it alone. Good thing too because a few minutes later a few local Bahamians came to collect their catch. Since we weren't terribly successful on our dive we decided to by one of the medium sized grouper from the locals. In June 2020, we decided to sell everything we own, house, car and lot of stuff that we do not need anymore so that we can buy a sailboat and go for an undetermined voyage around the globe. It's a busy few days in San Juan, Puerto Rico getting Calico Skies prepped and ready to go for our 750 mile sail to the Bahamas. This time on Kawai we farewell Jase's parents however receive some new crew Damien (Richo) and Nicole also from Australia. We experience one last day trip with Jase’s parents as we sail to ‘Lady of the rocks’ near Perast from Kotor before they must depart and continue their travels. Lady of the rocks in usually only visited by small boat from Perast but we park Kawai in the 'bay of Kotor' and visit by tender. After Rod and Cath leave we head to a new anchorage Uvala Sutvara which is perfect for relaxation and is a perfect spot to keep Kawai. We finally get some great weather and plenty of sun which allows Trace and I to swim and bake. Richo and Nicole arrive in Kotor so we sail back and pick them up and celebrate. It’s not long however before we climb the ladder of Kotor and St John Fortress. The ladder of Kotor has stunning views over the ‘Bay of Kotor’ and once you reach the summit you have views as far as Croatia and Tivet unfortunately the clouds spoiled the view. We also take Damien and Nicole out for their first sail from Kotor, which they enjoy, sailing up through the mountainous bay past Perast and Lady of the rocks for a swim before anchoring in Risan. Unfortunately the time for Damien and Nicole comes to an end and we sail back to Kotor for some sailing cards fun before they continue their travel through Europe. About us: Our names are Jason and Tracey and we traded our house, cars, business, job and security for freedom, adventure, travel and living simply amongst nature and the seas on our 45 foot Hanse 445 sailing boat, Kawai.
