In this episode of Sailing Zephyr we catch the ferry over to the neighbouring island of Pico. We do some major sightseeing including having a look at the highest peak in Portugal and enjoy exploring some villages built entirely out of lava rock. We find a whaling museum that explains the history of whaling in Pico and how this shaped the history of the Azores. After living nearly a year in Cape Verde I flew back to my home country Switzerland. And from the plane, to the airport and many restaurants later, I was gobsmacked by the amount of food varieties we have in the land of good and plenty, or modern society. But I also was in Switzerland for a very special celebration. One that takes place only 5 time a century, or every 20 or so years. It's The Fête des Vignerons, or Winemakers Festival. A day in the life living on a sailboat on an island in the Bahamas, Bimini. Not everyday is sailing in the cruising life. A lot of it is like "normal" land life. You still need to do the things that need to be done, running errands for things you need, doing laundry, eating and being happy! The difference is that you do these things in unfamiliar locations, no car, lots of walking and exposed to the elements. For this reason, everyday tasks take much longer to achieve but also feel like more of an achievement once completed. We finally made it into the French Canals on our tiny floating home! Boat life is occasionally extremely stressful. Taking our tiny floating home through 100 stone sided locks would make any boast owner stressed.Upon entering the Canal du Midi with our sailing boat (now converted into a canal boat!), our first order of business was negotiating our first lock, the round lock at Agde. We had unstepped our mast and was transporting the mast on the deck of our sailing boat, so dealing with the overhang was a new experience- not to mention dealing with the awkward dimensions of the lock itself! But it was a LOT of fun (stressful fun- but isn't that the best kind?) and definitely a new experience. Bring on the rest of the french canals! The 2019 Rolex Fastnet Race has been won by David and Peter Askew’s 21.5 meter (70-foot) Maxi yacht Wizard. Finishing third on the water behind her larger rivals Rambler and SHK Scallywag, she is the first American yacht to win the race overall since Great News in 1989. Prevailing from an international fleet of 388 yachts is a remarkable achievement. The Rolex Fastnet Race is one of the world’s legendary and most challenging contests. Wizard’s crew can be rightly proud of their accomplishment and for fully embracing the characteristics required to succeed in discipline of offshore racing: preparedness, determination, endurance and skill. It was not an easy win. Conditions at the Fastnet Rock on the second day were some of the worst in recent years with strong wind and steep waves testing the commitment of the crews. Wizard’s position at the top of the podium was challenged hard, not least by French yacht Bretagne Telecom, which finished second overall, a mere 45 minutes behind and British yacht Tala, a further 45 minutes back. After much planning we finally complete the passage through the notoriously tricky Devil's Backbone reef and arrive at a beautiful secluded beach north of Harbour Island, Eleuthera. We are being extra cautious as we opted to tackle the reef without the aid of a pilot, using our charts in conjunction with our eyes to "read" the color of the water in order to differentiate between reef and deep water. A great way to spend a day away from Phuket beaches and city life!
