Todays video is a special one! This past winter back in Sweden we recorded a talk between Johan and his sailing companion, Kristian, about their Antarctica expedition in 2005-2007. Hope you’ll enjoy it and don’t miss the Antarctica mini series we did about their trip: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLm5FlhgS5UCCF2JiZ7F3A_lMP-R-jUW0B Map over Deception Island: http://www.ecophotoexplorers.com/antarcticadeception.asp We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. Check out Benjy's boat building plans here ➜ http://bit.ly/benjy-website Comment below to tell us which is your favourite design - and why! If you want to know how to build a boat (or bike camper / caravan!), there is no better way than drawing from the experience of others. Humans have been building boats since the dawn of time and the knowledge which has been accumulated over millennia has brought untold benefits to us all. The Lagoon national park area around Faro in the Algarve is well known with sailors around the world as a great place to safely anchor while waiting for the right weather to transit down to the Canary Isles or into the Med. It also has a great DIY boatyard and good prices if you need to come out of the water. We explore the whole area, come out for antifouling and battle with our 2 stroke outboard, again! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You Tube are now putting mid -role adds on videos, but there is a way to see the current videos with no adds at all before they get released to the public. We didn't actually do enough motoring to properly test it however so apologies for not having that in this film. We will give a video update in a future episode, but in the meantime I do have some stats from using the alternator a bit now so will write out what I've found here: Firstly on advice from experienced marine engineers that you get much more longevity by running the alternator at below full capacity I set the 'belt manager' to 3 on the regulator. This means you will not get full capacity out of the alternator but it will be less stressed and last longer. having the belt manager on 3 is supposed to drop the output by 21% and it seems I get about 95 Amps at cruising revs when the batteries are able to accept full charge so that seems about right. There are also some comments on the alternator film that people have experienced Balmar failures due to excessive fan belt dust. I would always do everything possible to avoid creating fan belt dust, that's why lining up pulleys and tensioning the belts properly is important. You need a tensioner on a twin belt system, levering the alternator over and tightening it up won't cut it! In real life use, after a night at anchor I'm typically at 60-70% state of charge on the house bank (580AH AGM) So running the engine to leave the anchorage and raise the sails, usually about 1 hour, gets my state of charge up around 15% so 75-85% This is about right as the internal resistance of the battery goes up to a level where bulk charging is slowed to such an extent that solar is a much better option anyway. A no wind passage where you're motoring for a period of time will easily bring the batteries back to full charge which is good for the batteries. We get enough days like that in the Med. to give the batteries an occasional full charge so we don't have to rely on shore power to do that. Basically then I think the alternator is doing the job it needs to do & I'm happy. I'm still a bit shy of total power for long term voyaging without resorting to the Generator. We only used the Genny once in the last 4 months. But the power I'm short of is more the lower amperage long term charge which for me will probably be more solar. We could go to wind, but I'm very reluctant because of the noise, even the best modern designs are intrusive to some degree. Hydro is also an option, but difficult to fit on a canoe stern. Also reducing power draw is always something to look at. I've done everything possible for the moment I think, but there is one big saving we could make which is to fit wind vain steering at not use the autohelm. This is an attractive option for all the other benefits it brings, but it has the same problems of fitting to a canoe stern and is expensive. If you're interested in the technical aspects of sailing, i've uploaded some maintenance videos of the boat lift to the 'Tech Corner' page of our website... http://www.sailingfairisle.com/tech-corner.html We edit these episodes as we go along so they are always right up to date, so please follow us on Facebook to get an insight into what's coming up in the next episode.

Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. We keep island hopping via Vanuatu and as we leave our last anchorage in Epi we were hit by 50+ knots of wind and 5 meter seas… Weather forecasts were Max 20 knots… Oh well… We are lucky to withstand these conditions with no damage. At least we made it on time to the last Land Diving / Nangol for this year – one of the most impressive things we’ve seen… Too bad one of the guys had unsuccessful landing but we were assured he was fine. When we get to the Espiritu Santo, our crew left and we stayed to explore the island – diving SS President Coolidge – one of the most famous wreck dives and enjoy pristine beaches – Port Olry and Champagne Beach in Santo. We are sad to leave Vanuatu, that gave us so many unforgettable experiences and take off to Papua New Guinea… Join us! Thanks so much for watching 🙏 Stay tuned as next Friday 12PM EST we release a new video 🎥 We do our best to keep you entertained and informed and if you find it fun, enjoyable or informative, consider becoming part of our team and ➡️ join us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/svaquarius ➡️ want to support us, but not sure about long term commitment? Learning Learning Learning On day two we got the stars out of our eyes and we were more able to focus on Fit & Finish, Design and Practicality. We are very practical people, and things need to make sense to us. There are pros and cons to each of the yachts we toured. We are looking for a full-time live-aboard home, so the boat needs to be comfortable and manageable for the two of us. We carefully looked at living space in the salon and hulls, as well as the helm and cockpit. We spoke to several reps about the different features. At this show the Fontaine Pajot (I spelled it correctly this time) was the leader in interio design, but on the 47 we just don't like the winches being separated from the helm. The Bali was beautiful, but the helm being isolated from the cockpit is a deal-breaker. We didn't give the Lagoon 42 the attention it deserved and we need to check out a new Lagoon at our next opportunity. In the Fit & Finish category we were most impressed with the Bali. In all fairness, again, we didn't give the Lagoon a proper look. The Fontaine was weakest in that category. The veneers and fasteners did not hold up to close scrutiny. The show was even busier on Saturday. It was difficult to film without capturing random people. With lectures going on and wait times for the more popular production cats, we learned that time management is key to these events. We both agree that there is a massive difference between watching on YouTube and actually setting foot on these catamarans. We will be more concious of a game plan and better equipment in the future. Annapolis was very much worth the trip. We hope you agree! Let us know in the comments below, Lisa and Dave Thank you so much to those of you who've subscribed and liked our videos. We sail from the Lifou town of Chepenehe to Joking, stopping at a secluded beach along the way where we have a snorkel on a beautiful coral reef in the clearest of waters. At Joking we meet the chiefs wife Clarice to pay our respects and are invited to have a traditionally cooked dinner. Clarice's wonderful daughters act as waitresses and delightfully serve us. We then sail to the most northern island of the Loyalty group of Ouvea. Ouvea has a 25 km beach of sand fine like talcum powder and as white as snow. Even with cloudy skies the water is a beautiful turquoise blue. We check out Lekiny lagoon, and the towns of Mouli, Fayaoue and St Joseph But the biggest highlight was when walking back along the beach, we find a Nautilus washed up onto the shore. After saving it from a certain death on the beach, it slowly recovers. After spitting out a great deal of sand, it appears quite well again and we return it to face another day.

The Rolex Fastnet Race is one of sailing’s ultimate challenges: a racecourse that has achieved mythic status, a turning mark that is a true icon in sport and a near 100-years of history and tradition. The 48th edition attracted a record fleet of 388 yachts, of which 333 competed for the overall win on handicap. Conditions this year properly tested competitors from around the world. Professional and Corinthian crews alike experienced a broad range of weather and sea states; all had to overcome the notorious tidal and tactical challenges presented by the famous course. Records were broken, superlative performance converted into triumph and across the fleet endeavour was rewarded. An enduring legend has been polished once again.

This week we continue to enjoy summer in Europe and check out more of Montenegro including Budva, Sveti Nicola, Sveti Stefan and Morinj before we start our journey to Croatia. Budva is the party hub of Montenegro and on arrival we decide to anchor off Sveti Nicola instead of Budva, as it was extremely busy with little room to anchor. Sveti Nicola is an Island just off Budva and is mostly undeveloped except for a few beach bars. It is covered in trees and the water is perfectly clear. Sveti Stefan is only 1.7nm away so we also spend a day checking out this unique place. Unfortunately while in Sveti Nicola we have issues with our generator, so we need to head back to Morinj, near Tivat, to meet a technician to remove the impeller as we can't remove it ourselves despite a good effort trying. The day our generator is fixed is Jase's birthday, so once it is sorted we tender across to a relaxed beach bar in Morinj for a couple of beers to celebrate. It is then time to prepare our departure from Montenegro to Croatia and during this we find a great place to fill our gas bottles! We then sail up the coast of Croatia to Cavtat where we sign in to Croatia and continue on and bunker down for a night storm in Slano and 30-40 knot winds throughout the night. Unfortunately the harbour master is not available during sign in at Cavtat so we have to venture in to Dubrovnik the following day to complete the process. About us: Our names are Jason and Tracey and we traded our house, cars, business, job and security for freedom, adventure, travel and living simply amongst nature and the seas on our 45 foot Hanse 445 sailing boat, Kawai. We don't know exactly where the winds will take us at this stage but over the next year we hope to sail to Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia. Jase loves making travel videos and we decided to upload to youtube to share our adventure. We really hope you enjoy and feel free to drop us a comment any time to chat or subscribe to follow along :) Instagram Jase: https://www.instagram.com/jase_stephens1/?hl=en Trace: https://www.instagram.com/trace_y02/?hl=en Music 1. We sail off anchor from Rock Sound and drop the hook at a "secret" blue hole located near a small group of islands known as the Pineapple Cays. This is an area that very few people go to. These small islands are uninhabited and very raw. We tend to hone in on these kind of places because we most enjoy the out of the way locations where we can get away from the crowd. We noticed in our Explorer Chartbooks a small note that simply read "caves" on the Southern end of Sheep Cay. So we set off to find these elusive caves, but we didn't realize that we would have to blaze our own trail in order to get there. After that we do a bit of snorkeling and spearing around the large rocks located on the Western shore of the island. We round off the day by enjoying a fresh stone crab catch. It was a great day at the Pineapple Cays. Enjoy!
