From coral reef to island paradise – this sailing passage took us from John Brewer Reef to Dunk Island, with a stop through the breathtaking Hinchinbrook Channel. The dramatic mountain ranges, lush rainforests and winding creek systems make this area one of the most spectacular parts of Queensland’s coast. We dropped anchor at Lucinda, took the tender to shore and enjoyed a great pub meal before heading deeper into Hinchinbrook’s waterways. Gayundah Creek was a highlight – calm, sheltered and surrounded by stunning scenery, even when the winds picked up. It is that time of the year again, the Annapolis Fall Sailboat Show is back in town. This is the sailing event of the year on the east coast. As always, Toni and I cleared our schedule months in advance so we can attend the show. We viewed boats of interest, took advantage of boatshow deals, participated in the comradery of fellow sailors, and of course, attended the parties. This year we toured the Corsair 880 trimaran and the brand new Dragonfly 36 trimaran. We had a list of items that we still needed for “Moments in Time” and had previously researched bottom line prices. Join me, Ryan the Rogue Rigger on my journey of restoring a Mach 2 International Moth that I picked up earlier this year. I plan on upgrading it with all the modern systems with out breaking the bank and then I will take you along for the steep learning curve of learning to sail this Tasmanian devil of a boat. I have dreamed of owning one of these since they first came out back in 2008 when I got to take one for a spin. It was an unreal experience/feeling that I have been chasing ever since. At the time they were crazy expensive to buy and not in my budget. These days they are still crazy expensive to buy new, now there are a lot of older moths on the second hand market that are relatively affordable (Less than a Laser/ILCA in this case). For those of you who don't know, an International Moth is a single handed 11 foot long hydro foiling sailboat. These boats literally fly over the water on two hydrofoils doing speeds 2-3 times the speed of the wind. After a couple months of big boat sailing and family vacations "Mothra" is back on the water. This was just a short training session. Enjoy!

We’ve officially hauled Sabado out of the water at Port Whangarei Marine Center in New Zealand, and the refit has begun! In this video, we take you through a day in our new routine: starting the morning at our rental house, commuting to the boatyard, and diving into our first big boat projects. We kick things off by tearing apart our bed to prep for a major power system upgrade. We also give you a tour of the yard facilities, and remove our cockpit fridge to make way for a new one. It’s a strange feeling seeing the boat on land with empty cabinets, but we’re excited (and a little nervous) about what’s ahead. This day changed everything for us. In this episode of Sailing Dark Angel, we work our way up the Exumas chain from Big Farmers Cay to our favorite anchorage at Thomas Cay, searching for calm waters away from swell and wakes. Our peaceful spot turns chaotic as a squall builds into a nightmare thunderstorm, threatening to drag our anchor. Then the unthinkable. A direct lightning strike hits us. ⚠️ Lightning Strike Update We were directly struck by lightning. Navigation systems, running lights, anchor lights, work lights, a large freezer, and even our keel were damaged. We're still facing VAT, duty, exchange rates, customs brokerage, and a costly haul-out for keel repairs in the Dominican Republic. Current items still needing repair/replacement include our Isotherm freezer in the saloon, our AIS and keel repairs. Also, our newly replaced wind instruments aren't working.
