Episode 4: Part 1 of my solo voyage across the North Atlantic. This is the first leg of my 2 year solo circumnavigation. We're back to working on Freebie, but we've got to be a little creative and choose our projects wisely because until the construction of the home she's docked behind is finished, we have limited access. We chose to work on the new companionway stairs because most of the work can be done at our apartment away from the boat. We're keeping things simple with this build. We're starting with piece of marine plywood and fiberglassing that. That board will be faired and painted white and attached to it we'll install teak and white oak steps. In this video we glass in the supports and start fairing in preparation for paint. Let us know what you think of the project in the comments down below, and be sure to offer up any suggestions for us on how to move forward! We appreciate the help! For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way. How do you name an episode when there is no central theme, we are the main characters, and the story is just about a typical day in our lives? If you are a Seinfeld fan you may call that a show about "nothing". We don't always have a plan but we always find fun and sometimes days are best spent when we create fun out of nothing. This week we make the short sail back to Spanish Wells to pick up a part for our autopilot. While in town, we search for a giant 275 pound Goliath Grouper, allegedly living in the area. Back at the boat, it's starting to get hot and humid, so we find a variety of entertaining ways to keep cool. Spoiler alert; dinghy plus surf board equals fun!! -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Thanks to our Patrons!

West Coast Multihulls partnered with Denison Yachting to host the 2019 Catalina Rendezvous. The event kicked off with a Thursday night meet-and-greet on the back deck of the Harbor Reef restaurant. Friday started with a dinghy raft-up pancake breakfast off the back of Flite Deck. The day finished with a Oscar themed party at Harbor Sands. On Saturday, the catamarans had a rally to the back side of the island and rafted up in Catalina Harbor for social hour boat hop. We would love to see more crews join the fun in 2020 so follow us and watch for next years announcement. In this episode of The Art of Boat Building, I use copper rivets to rivet the frames to the floor timbers for the Haven 12 1/2. He also gives an overview of his trip to the Wooden Boat school in August of 2019. At the school I took a yacht design class taught by Navel Architect, Paul Gartside. In this video, Sailboat Rudder Rebuild, After Unstepping the mast in our last video, it's now time to get the rudder removed and see what over 30 years of bluewater crusing can do. It's important for us to do some of these big jobs on Balachandra now as we are planning to cruise to the carribean for up to a year so she needs to be completely reliable. In this video I remove the rudder, cut it open, inspect, clean, and replace the rudder core, then re-glass the rudder sealing it back up, then put it back on the boat (ALL IN ONE VIDEO!) We FINALLY got on board with PATREON! If you like our videos and want to see more/better videos, more often you can become a patreon supporter: https://www.patreon.com/sailingbalachandra If you like these videos, please SUBSCRIBE to see more, and be sure to give this video a like! In August of 2017 I sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is our YouTube sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and the occasional crewmembers(s) as we navigate the east coast of North America and beyond. We also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard in a cold climate. iFLY15 flying in wind speeds as light as 6-7knots. Amazing performance with revolutionary auxiliary light wind front sail CodeF - "Code0 to fly". The innovation of CodeF is a patented iFLY15 development. It allows to be full foiling upwind as well as downwind and reach. Center of effort is extremely low. Ideal for upwind foiling. Foot closes gap with deck, as tack is positioned on bow. No gennaker boom is needed. Sail is off-centered, on the leeward hull. Thus positioned diagonally, creating lift for even earlier take-off. Due to its specific location, it was able to bring center of effort very much backwards, allowing for a perfect setup with no rudder forces. As sailing on all caps, CodeF usually is hoisted and stored only a few times per sailing day. Therefore there is no need for a sophisticated snuffer, which would be aerodynamically disadvantageous. In stronger wind conditions, when an auxiliary light wind sail is not needed, CodeF can be stored away without impairing iFLY15 clear and simple setup and design. more to know: https://iFLYsail.com

Since I started this channel a little over two years ago, one of the most common questions I've been asked is: how much does is cost to go sailing full time? So I decided to finally tackle this one. I pulled together all of my expenses from June 2018 through May 2019. Though I would not call myself a survivalist, I do live on a relatively small and simple boat, so probably my costs are on the lower end of the spectrum. My first overnight sailing passage of the year is from Wayag in Raja Ampat over to Tobelo, a trip of some 170nm. I'm joined by my youngest brother Toby and we had some amazing sailing, caught some very tasty fish and arrived in Tobelo anchorage in fine form. The next day we spent exploring this rad little city full of smiling faces and "hey Misters". Life is good! First off, thank you all for the messages of support that we have received since we got back from our sail! Last week, Ryan and I were crossing the Mediterranean Sea between Malta and Almerimar. On the 6th day of our passage, I got injured (not the nice kind of injury) while making coffee. This video is about how I got a 2nd degree burn bigger than the size of my hand while a day away from shore, how we took care of it when it happened, and how it impacted the rest of our sail. I share the lessons I learned from that incident, and what we will do differently in the future. Ultimately, I’m all good if only a little bummed out about the scar I’m going to get out of the ordeal. If you are interested in the first aid course we took, check out this link! https://crossinglatitudes.com/ Thanks again for all the messages of support, you guys are the absolute best! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ** JOIN THE CREW! ** Join our virtual crew of Patrons at: https://www.patreon.com/ryanandsophiesailing ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ** MUSIC ** 🎶 In this video: River Foxcroft - Bloodroot Mountain (Epidemic Sound) Chris Shards - Between the waves (Epidemic Sound) Joe E Lee - Hawaiian Conquistador (Epidemic Sound) Anders Ekengren - Silly Drunken Pirate 1 (Epidemic Sound) Niklas Ahlström - Style 5 (Epidemic Sound) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ** GEAR ** ⛵️Our boat: Polar Seal, 2007 Beneteau Oceanis 40, owners version (2 cabins layout). Want to crew on Delos? Details at https://patreon.com/svdelos :) The best the things you find sailing are often unplanned. Forced to leave Montserrat in a hurry to get out of the way of a cargo ship that wanted to anchor in our spot, we set sail unprepared for our next destination. As we sail out of the anchorage we decide to make an unintended stop the island of St. Barts. We sail overnight and Brady gives us a demonstration of how our tethering system for keeping people onboard Delos at night, and we also talk about some of our rules for sailing safely at night. We’re immediately blown away by the stunning beauty of St. Barts and decide to have a day exploring the waters and beaches in Delos style. 231 Videos and counting! Adventures in the company of Canadians Dave & Pete continue. We get a flat in the middle of nowhere and manage to get a lift of Cape Verde manpower. What luck. Then we go to what some call Africa's Woodstock. A massive outdoor music festival that is mind-blowing. And we say goodbye to Pirate friend Tito, just to say hello a few days later. It's almost time for me and Galopin to go, but when? Please make your voice heard: Subscribe, like, dislike, or comment.
