It was sudden. And our minds immediately jumped to the worst case scenario; A massive jagged gaping hole that is not easily repaired or pluggable. Indonesia has very few haul out facilities especially for catamarans. So few that the consequence would be limping to Singapore or Malaysia some 500 miles away. OUR BOAT is a Ferrari red 2014 Outremer 51 performance cruising catamaran. We chose this boat as it has been specifically designed for the purpose of bluewater sailing. It was designed and built to withstand the stress of sailing multiple times around the world safely and in comfort. It's also a speed demon, which is important when you want to cover large distances of water before the weather changes. Lastly, it's backed by the manufacturer with outstanding customer service and aftermarket support, so we believe she will hold her value well. And, she's nice on the eyes too. OUR ROUTE has taken us from the Boston/Cape Cod area of the United States down to the Caribbean and then on to the Panama Canal.  At the time of posting this we are dealing with a repair in the South Pacific, and in 2020 we hope to be in New Zealand and Southeast Asia. By 2021 we will be in the Med and close to completing our circumnavigation. Whether it is in big waves or small, gale force or sub-10 winds, Chris Bake’s Team Aqua has shone this week and as a result today won the 44Cup Cascais with a race to spare. Although this was common occurrence for Team Aqua during her glory years of 2011-13, winning with a race to spare is very rare these days, such is the level of competition in the high performance one design monohull class. The final day of 44Cup racing off the Portuguese sailing mecca, where the event is being hosted by the Clube Naval de Cascais, provided even brisker conditions than yesterday. This was mainly due to the race committee setting up the start area further offshore, free from the protection of the headlands west of Cascais. As a result, with the wind regularly blowing 20+ knots, and a lumpy and at times random chop set up on top of the Atlantic swell, it was a perpetually wet ride for the crews on this high load, high stress deciding day.

In this video the Bottom UP Boats team teach you some simple tips to ensure you can tie a perfect cleat hitch every time. To tie the perfect cleat hitch every time you must have the right size rope to match the cleat. It may not be possible to always have your rope match the size of the cleat so you need to be able to adapt to ensure your knot is tight and secure, this will avoid an embarrassing and maybe costly moment as your boat sails away for the dock without you. To tie the perfect cleat hitch when your rope does not match the cleat size you need to vary the turns you take around the base of the cleat. If the rope matchs a half loop cleat hitch will hold, if your rope is a smaller diameter you will need to complete additional turns, stepping up to a full or multi loop cleat hitch. Depending on the conditions and if you need to spring your boat you may opt of the full loop cleat hitch to have the tail point back towards the boat or a multi loop cleat hitch if you are expecting heavy weather the perfect cleat hitch may be different than the one you usually tie when you take these variables into plan By understand the relationship between the rope width and the cleat you will be able able to tie a perfect cleat hitch every time. If you made it to the end of the video you now have the skills to tie a perfect cleat hitch every time, this simple but important skill ensures you can dock your boat with the peace of mind that it will be there when your return !!!!

A gente saiu meio no susto, meio sem pensar de Camamu. Depois das ameaças pelo rádio eu só queria sair dali o mais rápido possível. Então paramos num restaurante para almoçar meio rápido e aproveitamos a saída da maré das 19h para sair da baía. Foi muito legal subirmos com o Strega, porque viemos nós, o Caboges e o Alquimia. Nós e o Strega seguimos muito juntos, no mesmo ritmo. Foi legal ver que a gente navegava bem juntos. Durante a noite eu me senti muito tranquila apesar dos pirajás. A noite estava bem escura, mas a luminescência estava linda! Então eu aproveitei cada minuto olhando pra água brilhando. Foi muito legal. Na entrada, acabamos seguindo o Strega, pois quase entramos na Marina Bahia, achando ser o tal Tenab - que agora virou Mariana Porto Salvador. Paramos o barco super bem no cai, apesar dos mais de 10 nós de vendo e ficamos admirando o elevador Lacerda enquanto pensávamos com tristeza em fazer as malas para voltar pra São Paulo.

This week we're visited by the coastguard to check we're complying with Turkey's strict Blue Card Scheme and more enjoyably.. by family from the UK who come sailing in Turkey with us! The kids have their birthday onboard so we visit an adventure play park in Marmaris while we have rigging and sails changed on our sailboat. When the maintenance and upgrades are complete we sail for Bodrum with a few stops on the way. The Turkish coastline in beautiful but still not immune from the curse of plastic pollution. But we don't let that spoil our fun with a hike in the hills (in unsuitable footware!) and onto the beach for nighttime camp fires!
