Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. What a way to start Season 4... That was NOT intentional by any means. What we thought will be a simple few hours sail became one of the most challenging passage. All started well - friends saying farewell and we even got some wind, where for 3 months in Indonesia we had to motor almost all the time. We had beautiful views into the Singapore and felt elated starting new season and about to arrive to Malaysia. Singapore and Malacca strait - one of the busiest places in the world, so we didn't think it's gonna be a breeze, but did not expected this tuff navigation. And did not expected to be pulled over by the Police. In the beginning it was all jokes but after 2 hours we felt more and more uneasy and worried. Finally after 2.5 hours we were let go. It's sunset and we still have hour and a half to go to unknown territories into unknown marina... And we are the ones advising everyone not to sail at night... Oh well... Navigating in a busy place at night is no fun. Also no fun going under the bridge or arriving to marina after work hours in pitch dark, but we did all of this! Join us! EP 115 We finally test our sails on a yacht we built! We were so excited to test out our Spinnaker! It was magical and we were so happy to see her rainbow colors flying. Building a cruising sailboat As the title suggests, this week, I build a stowage locker in under the nav table - continuing the internal-furniture-as-structure theme. The excitement continues as I purchase a new vacuum cleaner, have a good moan and then progress to fitting LED lights in the fore cabin!!! This is the story of the building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat, constructed of plywood and epoxy. We're hitting the road in a low budget RV and we have no idea what we're doing. The RV lifestyle will be loads different from sailing, but I guess the only way to get used to it is to toughen up, back this beast out of the driveway, and start heading West. After months of getting the Big Ugly Rolling Turd ready for action, we are finally ready to hit the road. Yes, good ole BURT has a lot to prove, but we feel like he's up to the task. We've put a ton of time and money into getting this RV ready to rock, and the time to depart has arrived! We load it up and... wait... did I put the little cotter pin through the hitch? Better check. Yeah... it's there. Might as well take a look at the tire pressure while I'm back here. 1psi low, hmm... better safe than sorry. Did I torque those lug nuts enough? Just gonna put a wrench on there really quick... 4 hours later, we're ready to go. We leave the driveway!
