This week we tackle the dirtiest — and most critical — stage of our engine install. With the engine finally out, Timo gets to work in the engine room: first tidying the spaghetti junction of cables so everything can come off the walls for painting later, and then cutting out the old engine bed. It’s tough, dusty work — with a few surprises along the way, including water trapped inside the old bed and supports left over from the boat’s racing days. To keep the dust down, Timo even sprays soapy water as he cuts. Meanwhile, the kids and I escape to a hotel while the worst of the grinding takes place — and of course, it all happens right around the captain’s birthday. By the end, the old engine bed is out, and we get our first side-by-side look at the old and new foundations. Next week: the real challenge begins as we prepare to laminate the new one into place. J'en profite pour rajouter des vannes . Nous partons ensuite pour le port de Moaña pour préparer le départ pour les Açores . Pas de bol on se fait refuser l'entrée , alors nous partons essayer le port de Vigo en face . Ils ont de la place et nous nous amarrons sans problème . Long range, low running costs and incredible living spaces are just some of the reasons why I can see the Omikron OT-60 becoming the boat of choice for people who otherwise thought they needed a catamaran or a trawler. I think it's fair to argue that this design makes more sense than a catamaran or trawler from an operational and living perspective in many of the worlds busy cruising grounds. I accept if you want to cross the Atlantic then this isn't the boat, but for many of you who are sticking to the Med or Caribbean then this boat is actually better and more user friendly in so many ways. The Mastery Race is one that celebrates some of the special aspects of the whaleboat, and resembles some aspects of its use during whaling. Due to the nature of the manoeuvres it's necessarily a time trial race, where a boat sets off every 2 minutes. The race starts with each boat on the slip, with all its gear inside, for rowing and sailing, as would happen during whaling. At the sound of a horn, the boat is launched as quick as possible by its 7 "man" crew, and turned 180 degrees in order to leave the harbour by oars. After about half a mile, there is a buoy that marks a transition phase where sailing rules apply. This means boats must cease rowing, and transform into sailboat. This implies recoiling the oars and raising the mast and sails. This would sometimes happen during whaling when it was determined that this change would get them to a surfaced whale fastest. At a second buoy, starts a third leg, where it's "free for all". Boats can choose any means of locomotion, and even accumulate them. In this phase, boats can try different approaches depending on their reading of the elements and their crews capacities. You can keep sailing, you can add paddles or oars to help speed, and you can drop the sails all together and row in. A R B E I T E N im Masttop | SY MariaNoa | #141d Wir sind zurück von unserem Heimaturlaub in Deutschland. Von Hongkong kommend haben wir noch einige Tage in der Vuda Marina auf Fidschi gebucht, um Arbeiten an MariaNoa durchzuführen, die unterwegs unmöglich sind. Jedes Mal wenn wir nach längerer Abwesenheit auf MariaNoa zurückkehren, ist die Spannung groß. Aber auch dieses Mal gibt es weder Schimmel- noch Insektenbefall. Zu Übungszwecken entferne ich in geringer Höhe am Mast alte Umlenkrollen, die schon lange nicht mehr benutzt werden. Hier bringe ich auch das erste Mal die Autofolie zum Einsatz. Mit dem Mast direkt vor der Nase ist es schwierig, die Folie horizontal aufzukleben. Auch ganz blasenfrei wird die Oberfläche leider nicht. ▬ Über diesen Film ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Die bisher vorhandenen Umlenkrollen in der Endlosleine zum Furler des Gennacker habe ich durch Rollen mit Klemmen ersetzt. Hierdurch erhoffe ich mir zusätzliche Sicherheit, dass der Gennacker sich nicht ungewollt entrollt. Um die Rollen zu tauschen musste die Endlosleine aufgeschnitten und somit ersetzt werden. In 18 Meter Höhe ist der Mast glücklicherweise genauso ruhig wie weiter unten. In zwei Eimern habe ich hoffentlich alles Werkzeug dabei, das ich brauche. Der Arbeitsablauf ist ähnlich, wie weiter unten. Zunächst werden die erst kürzlich montierten Schotdurchführungen wieder demontiert. Hierfür müssen die hochfesten Monel Blindnieten ausgebohrt werden. Der Arbeitsbereich mit seinen verbleibenden Bohrungen wird mit der Autofolie beklebt. Daraufhin werden je ein StandUpBlock von Lewmar für den Parasailor und den Gennacker montiert. Entstanden war die Neuordnung des Masttops durch den neuen Gennacker. Um diesen zu befestigen, musste wiederum der Befestigungspunkt für den Parasailor weiter nach oben verschoben werden. Die kürzlich montierten Schotdurchführungen hatten leider zum Schamfielen der Fallen geführt – so konnte das nicht bleiben. Habt Ihr konkrete Fragen? Wir sind Hinter den Kulissen bei der SailGP in Sassnitz! Erstmalig findet das Event in Deutschland statt. Team Germany ist zum zweiten Mal dabei mit Driver Erik Heil und seiner Crew und tausende Zuschauer hoffen auf ein Top-Ergebnis! An Action hat es jedenfalls nicht gefehlt und auch wir sind schwer beeindruckt. Wir bekommen die Katamarane nämlich von der nähe zu sehen und bekommen auch einige Teammitglieder vor die Kamera. We hoisted our sails and set out to sea on a passage that would take us around the wild most southern tip of Africa, where two mighty oceans collide. Instead of the roaring seas and furious weather this area is known for, we were met with an eerie calm. Thick fog wrapped around us like a ghostly veil, and the ocean lay calm beneath our hull. We then rounded the infamous Cape Aghalus with our asymmetrical spinnaker flying high! I am sure That’s not something many sailors would have in their log books. This moment marked a massive milestone for our circumnavigation: we’ve officially crossed into our third ocean — the Atlantic — leaving behind and saying goodbye to the wild energy of the Indian Ocean. We made landfall in False Bay under the most magical conditions, and now, a whole new adventure awaits — new places, new faces, and the city of Capetown to explore Sure enough, we didn’t have to go far to run into a baboon. We were told after the fact, that most afternoons the baboons hike down the mountain into town looking for a quick and easy feed. Now, Baboons are proper scary, they are as big as Great Dane, smart and have zero fear.
