Small boat (32 foot) crossing the Atlantic Ocean with a limited crew. The Comfortina 32 sailboat was never made for crossing an ocean, but we did not understand that at that time. We were young and naive and we just set off in the boat we had. Crossing the Atlantic westbound with a small sailboat shorthanded was easy, scary, exciting, demanding, frustrating and fun. And what did we learn? Go small, go simple and go now. You will never miss one more day at work! On our crossing we had more days with calm that we had with gale force. We wished for more wind on half our passage, but in retrospect it was better to have less wind than too much wind.

Sailing a small vessel from the Mediterranean to the Canary Islands, back in 2002. The sailing yacht Thule is a Comfortina 32, made in Sweden. The boat is made for coastal cruising and racing. It was never meant for ocean passages, but we did not understand that at that time. I still remember my sailmaker said: "Nobody crosses an ocean with a Comfortina!" Well, at that time he was right. Nobody had ever crossed an ocean with a Comfortina, yet. We were so prepared and had so much faith in the boat and ourself (We were young...) so we made it a god and off we went. We prepared her as good as we could and headed for the big adventure. In this video you will see three minutes of the sailing from the Mediterranean, to Gibraltar and to the Canary Islands. This was no problem at all, so in the next video you will se us sailing cross the Atlantic, probably for the first time ever in a Comfortina. What did we learn? Go small, go simple and go now. We sailed from Norway to the Mediterranean, through the waterways of Europe, back in 2002. The boat was a Comfortina 32, made for summer sailing along the Swedish coast. It was never built for doing 220 locks in one go, or to be sailed across the vast Atlantic ocean. but we did both. A small family at sea, two parents and a daughter 20 months old, spend a year in this boat on the adventure of their lives. This was back in 2002 - 2003, several years before Youtube was launched. Now (2024) more than 20 years after this epic trip we have found the old video cassettes and edited them to a length and format that is suitable for Youtube. Follow us and se how we and the sailboat performs on the rivers and canals of mainland Europe. In later videos you will also see us in the Med and crossing the Atlantic ocean and spending time on the Caribbean beaches. But first, we need to get this boat from Sandefjord, Norway to the Mediterranean.

Intro Sailing Thule: Small boat, Big adventure In 2002, we set sail from Norway in a small sailboat, ready to explore the world. We were just two adults and a young child on an adventure like no other. We navigated the waterways of Europe, watched dolphins play in the Mediterranean, and crossed the vast Atlantic Ocean to reach the Caribbean. We sailed through strong winds, and at times, no wind at all. We spent four months enjoying life on the beach. We even raced against legendary yachts like the Velsheda and the Windrose. Much of our time was spent at anchor. Occasionally sailing from island to island, soaking in the beauty of the Caribbean. In the middle of the Atlantic, we came to the aid of another yacht in need, sharing what resources we could in the vast emptiness of the ocean. Shortly after, dolphins joined us, leaping joyfully alongside the boat, and also a pod of whales appeared close by. Some days were utterly windless, the sea like a mirror. Other days, the winds were almost too strong. We stopped to sketch our memories in the Azores, drifted through a calm in the English Channel, and finally, after 13 unforgettable months, we returned safely to Norway. 32 foot sailboat crossing the Atlantic Ocean from Antigua to the Azores. Another yacht has run out of fuel and is having trouble reaching the Azores. Over the short wave radio (SSB) we learned about this and the sailboat Thule comes to the rescue. How to transfer Diesel fuel in the middle of the ocean? We solved this by sailing really close, perhaps a bit too close under these circumstances and so far from help, in case this goes wrong. While sailing side by side the other boat throws a line to us, and we attach the can of fuel. Throwing this in the sea, and with the line they can pick it up. We did this twice, and this maneuver was quite exciting. This was during 2003, when the yacht Thule and her crew of two was sailing back from the West Indies after a years adventure. The other yacht, Louise III, ran out of fuel on her way to the Azores. The day of this fuel transfer it was quite windy, but they still needed fuel to get to the Azores in a sensible time. Then it's good to have friends on the sea! Never run out of fuel in the Atlantic ocean. Never run out of supplies.

Desgraciadamente no nos sobra el dinero, más bien todo lo contrario, de ahí que buscaremos trabajo en el caribe. During this process, they discovered the rudder's condition was poor, requiring a complete removal and repair. They needed to fix the fiberglass and fix the boat. This boat repair involved adding new material to the steel axle after finding it worn down. Nauticat 38 is being refurbished in 2024, and one of the things we found was that the rudder stem was almost worn out. Almost half of the diameter was lost, reducing the strength of the shaft to about 30%. A big wave, or a broach could have been enough to loose the rudder. At least it would have been an easy match for all the Orcas eating rudders for breakfast, lunch and dinner these days. By coincidence this fault was found, and luckily for us it was an easy (and expensive) thing to fix. Thanks a lot to Kjetil and his team at VakuumTeak in Väst (Orust, Sweden) for taking care of this. The boat is getting better and better, and this is soon the best Nauticat ever! The condition of the sailboat rudder required some boat repair. The fiberglass repair was extensive, but necessary to ensure safe sailing and extend the boat life. We had to do some yacht repair to make it all work out.

La sensación de fondear en una cala/bahia, y depender de tu ancla ⚓ y cadena, para que tu barco (el mío en concreto con un peso de 16,000KG) no se mueva de su sitio, y puedas confiar al 100% que cuando te dé sueño, te puedas acostar y dormir 8 horas seguidas (como en casa) y que cuándo te despiertes, todo estará *Seguro* y exactamente igual que cuando te dormiste, eso, *NO ES UNA REALIDAD* , y dependera de muchos factores, los cuales, 1#, tienes que ser consciente de ellos", mareas, corrientes, vientos, fondo al cual el ancla está agarrado, barcos en las cercanías, perímetro de garreo y peligros posibles cercanos etc, y 2# tienes que estar dispuesto, a cualquiera hora, y a base de dormir con un ojo abierto (casi literalmente hablando) tener la energía, disposición, valentía, y sangre fría de *actuar* en el momento que haga falta de levantarte y afrontar la situación que se haya formado y buscar la forma, y asesorar el mejor método de reducir el peligro de la embarcación y vidas abordo mientras lo pones todo a salvo.
