This episode dives into the new additions to Vision catamarans that excite us most, including advancements in sail technology, improved onboard efficiency, and the move from AC to DC air-conditioning systems to reduce complexity and reliance on AC equipment. Caliber 40 LRC from the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aePzZ5BCjww https://www.davidwaltersyachts.com/for-sale/9969261 Caliber 40 LRC Used Boat Review: https://www.practical-sailor.com/sailboat-reviews/used_sailboats/caliber-40-lrc/ If you’re shopping for a serious cruising sailboat, the Caliber 40 LRC is often described as “bulletproof.” Heavy displacement, huge tankage, conservative construction, and a reputation for offshore comfort have made it a quiet favorite among long-range cruisers. But like many purpose-built boats, the Caliber 40 LRC also has a less-talked-about design weakness that buyers and surveyors need to understand before writing a check. In this video, we take a practical, no-nonsense look at the Caliber 40 LRC SE. We go over build quality, layout, tankage, sailing performance, and long-term livability, and then we dig into the single design choice that has surprised more than a few owners over the years. This isn’t a hit piece, and it’s not a sales pitch. It’s a realistic look at a boat that does many things extremely well, but isn’t perfect. If you’re considering a used bluewater cruiser, living aboard, or planning extended coastal or offshore cruising, this is a boat you should understand fully before you buy. Siamo ufficialmente in navigazione nelle acque Australiane! 🗂️ Beacon to Beacon Great Sandy Strait https://www.msq.qld.gov.au/beacon-to-beacon-guides/fraser-coast-guides 🗂️ Beacon to Beacon Moreton Bay https://www.msq.qld.gov.au/beacon-to-beacon-guides/moreton-bay-guides BUON DIVERTIMENTO! This evening I’m taking a quiet wander along the docks in Cherbourg, getting a feel for the marina and the boats gathered here. It’s a fascinating mix — very different answers to the same core problem: how to go to sea, and how to live out there safely, comfortably, and well. Along the dock we look at a Hallberg-Rassy 49, a custom French offshore boat, and an aluminium high-latitude expedition yacht. Each reflects a distinct design philosophy, and it’s always revealing to see how those ideas translate into real boats, in the real world. I also talk about meeting the team from Garcia Yachts aboard Osprey. Their curiosity and enthusiasm was a genuine pleasure, and on Monday I’ll be visiting the yard to look more closely at their work — including the Garcia 60 they’ve kindly invited me to explore. I’ll report back as soon as I can. For now, this video is simply about settling in, observing, and enjoying the quiet pleasure of walking docks and talking boats — because there are few things better than messing about with boats. Support the Mariner If you’d like to support the production of this work, you can find me on Patreon. It blends offshore experience, lessons learned the hard way, interviews, anecdotes, and the inevitable tangents that come with life aboard boats. It’s for sailors of any experience level — from beginners to seasoned offshore hands — and it exists to share knowledge openly in a world where that knowledge is often fragmented or lost. 🎧 https://themariner.podbean.com/ The Mariner’s Library Podcast The Mariner’s Library is a serialized audio project where I read classic sailing books from the last century and beyond — written by sailors who learned their lessons at sea and took the time to write them down. These works explore seamanship, endurance, navigation, risk, and the mental and physical realities of ocean life — often set in places and eras that feel almost unreal today. No modern commentary layered on top — just the original words, read respectfully and released in serialized form. 🎧 https://themarinerslibrary.podbean.com/ #sailing #adventure #ocean #boating

What is antifoul and why do boats need it? 🌊⛵ Antifoul is a protective coating applied below the waterline to prevent marine growth like barnacles, weed, and slime from attaching to a boat’s hull. In this reel, we break down what antifoul does, why it’s essential for performance and efficiency, and why choosing the right type matters — especially for aluminium boats like ours. In this episode, Mark from Nomad Boat Building travels to Denmark to help his friend Mikkel of Small Boat School—and in their spare time, they take on the restoration of a 200-year-old Danish timber frame barn. Originally relocated in 1862, this historic structure is being carefully repaired and adapted into a future hands-on classroom space. Using a mix of traditional timber framing joinery and practical modern tools, the two work to stabilize leaning walls, replace rotten sill beams, repair posts, and fit new mortise and tenon joints into centuries-old wood. Along the way, they reuse original lime-mortared bricks, discuss historic Scandinavian building terminology, and demonstrate efficient, minimal-intervention repairs that preserve as much original material as possible. Expect half-lap joints, scarf joints, loose tenons, chain mortising, and plenty of problem-solving as they carefully shift and realign parts of the barn’s structure. This series documents the restoration of a historic Danish barn, showing traditional craftsmanship, structural timber repair, and the realities of working on old agricultural buildings. Whether you're into timber framing, historic building restoration, traditional woodworking, or heritage construction, this project offers practical insight and plenty of character. 👉 Learn more about Mikkel’s boatbuilding course at Small Boat School Website: https://www.smallboatschool.com/ 👉 Follow Mark’s work at Nomad Boat Building Website: https://www.nomadboatbuilding.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nomadboatbuilding/ Support these videos with monthly or annual pledges at Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/nomadboatbuilding Or make a one time donation: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/nomadboatbuilding Topics in this video: • 200-year-old barn restoration • Danish timber frame construction • Traditional mortise and tenon joinery • Half-lap and scarf joints • Reusing historic bricks with lime mortar • Structural sill beam replacement • Timber frame wall realignment • Hand tools and modern power tools in restoration ⏱ Video Chapters 00:00 Introduction – Arriving in Denmark & The Barn Project 00:42 History of the 200-Year-Old Danish Barn 01:35 Stabilizing the Structure with Jacks 02:38 Reusing Old Bricks & Lime Mortar 04:10 Assessing Rot & Wall Movement 04:46 Rebuilding the Sill Beam 05:52 Timber Joinery Repairs Explained 06:35 Lifting and Realigning the Wall 08:46 Freeing the Structure & Adjusting Supports 11:21 Repairing a “Loose Halt” Timber 12:22 Danish Timber Framing Terminology 13:19 Traditional Scarf Joints vs Half-Laps 13:54 Reinstalling Structural Timbers 14:57 Blending Traditional Joinery with Modern Tools 18:56 Corner Repair Progress Update 21:17 Removing a Major Structural Timber 22:29 Lowering Heavy Timber Safely with Ropes 24:04 Fine-Tuning Timber Fit 26:40 Laying Out a New Mortise 29:58 Chain Mortiser in Action 32:43 Cleaning Up Mortises by Hand 35:07 Test Fitting the Timber 36:22 “Barn Sauce” & Workshop Humor 37:34 Driving the Joint Home 40:21 Final Doweling & Woodwork Wrap-Up 40:46 What’s Next – Masonry Work Begins #BarnRestoration #TimberFraming #HistoricRestoration #Woodworking #TraditionalJoinery #DanishBarn #HeritageBuilding #BoatBuilder
