Electric boats are no longer some far-off future idea — they’re here, and my new Island Spirit 525e is a perfect example. With a 210 kWh battery bank, two 65 kW electric motors, and around 80 nautical miles of electric range at 6 knots, this is a serious electric propulsion system. In this episode, I talk about the safety side of modern electric boats: lithium batteries, battery monitoring, cooling systems, electric propulsion, installation quality, and why today’s systems are much safer than they were just a few years ago. I also get into one of the biggest fears on any modern sailboat: lightning. A lightning strike can cause massive damage, destroy electronics, and create electrical gremlins that last for years. My new Island Spirit 525 electric catamaran is finally getting close to leaving the factory! In this episode, I head back to the Island Spirit factory in Thailand to check on the progress of my boat build, and it looks like we are only about 12 days away from getting her out of the factory. But of course, boat projects always come with surprises. During transport, a major component of my boat was damaged — a big hole was punched in the boom. Luckily, it is not the end of the world. The factory had a spare boom in stock, so we are swapping it out and keeping the build moving forward. The level of quality in construction, comfort, and functionality is genuinely difficult to compare. 'Equinox' is an impressive example with a comprehensive specification and shows a pleasing maintenance history. The Buizen design is clearly centered around the Pilot House / Deck Saloon interior. Think all weather protection and a safe and welcoming saloon space that truly connects with your surroundings – very few options come close to offering the same. Her layout features the additional twin cabin opposite the galley which gives maximum accommodation and internal storage space. The master cabin is forward with private ensuite, the galley is more akin to a mini superyacht, there is a comfortable private double-aft cabin, a second day head and shower plus the very practical pilot berth cabin. 'Equinox' includes all the major options that only the most comprehensively specified 48’s have: bow thruster, generator, air-conditioning, davits, water maker, removeable inner forestay with stay sail, plus all four cockpit winches are powered.
