That’s right, Victoria had disappeared during the night and made her way into shore. Steve suits up and paddles in the cold waters to retrieve her. The timing is finally right to continue on. Steve and Robin experience an overnight with just the two of them. It’s the first time they are truly alone in the ocean—nothing to hit, nothing to worry about, and nothing around them for miles. There are some big decisions coming up that will need to be made, and there are lots of opportunities to explore new areas as upcoming sailing plans are discussed. Steve stocks up on personal locator beacons to ensure that safety remains a top priority for the crew. Here's a quick video of one of our maintenance projects while the boat is out of the water. We had been told in the past that this is not a job you want to tackle while in the water - and boy, were they right! I couldn't find a how-to video or any visual instructions on how to do this, so hopefully this video will be useful to other sailors. Removing them with a flat head screw driver is fairly easy. Inserting the new ones is tough, and took some trying before finding a technique that worked without getting fingers mangled. If you have a sewing palm handy, or any hard surface you can fit in the palm of your hand without slipping, this job becomes very doable. Enjoy!

As you know (if you have been following) when I first got to the boat it was flooded after #hurricane Milton. That was due to a busted bilge pump & dead batteries.. so to ensure that it doesn’t happen again I replaced batteries and the bilge pump. Shortly after our 3-month Scandinavian adventure, we started the larger maintenance tasks we wanted to tackle: mainly painting the deck and the deckhouse. Since we faced some trouble in upholding the hull, wishing also to re-do the bottom painting, the obligatory 'CvO-keuring' (EU certification) shortly anyway and need to check out electrical stuff, we decided to book ourselves a spot at the 'Teerenstra-warf' in Den Helder. In this video, we bring together several weeks of work on Willem Johannes to make improvements to her as proper 'parents' should and get her in tiptop shape for a few years to come.....we hope :-) What is a CvO-keuring? In the Netherlands, a Certificate of Inspection (CvO) is mandatory for certain pleasure craft as a result of implementing European regulations. This requirement applies to vessels longer than 20 meters, those with a block size exceeding 100 cubic meters, and specific types of boats regardless of length, such as tugs, passenger ships, and vessels carrying hazardous materials. The Inland Waterways Act came into effect on July 1, 2009, with a 10-year transition period for existing vessels. Failure to obtain a valid CvO can result in significant consequences, including prohibition from independent sailing and a potential decrease in vessel value. The CvO certificate is valid for a maximum of 7 years and requires renewal through safety inspections. Vessels that applied for a CvO before December 30, 2018, benefited from a transitional arrangement with less stringent requirements. After this date, ships must meet all modern standards, which can be challenging for historical vessels. Ben joins the crew for a planned sail to Delaware. The hope is to be heading to Puerto Rico early December. Steve, Robin, and Ben have quite a few things to get done before the push south. Steve starts on deck, adding more safety lines to the boom. The addition of whisker poles—which lock the sail into place when the wind is coming directly behind—will expand the downwind sailing options. The truck gets cleaned out before heading to storage, meaning the climbing gear needs to be consolidated. Puerto Rico has a thriving sport climbing community, which Robin and Steve hope to check out. With everything needed finally on the boat, it’s time to see what the ocean has in store. Of course, you can’t compete with Mother Nature, and the weather isn’t always in their favor. The Importance of Proper Anchoring To prevent the strength of a safety harness tether from becoming compromised due to lateral loading, the method used to anchor the end of the tether to the vessel must be carefully considered. The primary objective is to ensure that the tether hook cannot become entangled with any deck fittings or other equipment. * Avoid Obstructions: * Clear the Path: Route the tether and hook away from any potential obstructions, such as cleats, winches, or other equipment that could cause entanglement. * Use Protective Covers: If obstructions cannot be avoided, consider using protective covers or sleeves to minimize the risk of the hook snagging. * Regular Inspection and Maintenance: * Inspect the Tether and Hook: Regularly check the tether for signs of wear, damage, or deterioration. Pay close attention to the hook for any signs of deformation or bending. * Replace Damaged Equipment: If any damage is found, replace the affected component immediately. Do not attempt to repair damaged equipment. * Proper Tether Attachment: * Secure the Hook: Ensure that the hook is securely clipped to the anchor point, with no slack in the tether. * Avoid Twisting: Prevent twisting of the tether, as this can weaken the fibers and reduce the overall strength. Additional Safety Tips: * Training and Education: All personnel who use safety harnesses should receive proper training on their correct use, inspection, and maintenance. * Emergency Procedures: Develop and implement emergency procedures for rescuing individuals who may become incapacitated while using a safety harness. * Regular Safety Audits: Conduct regular safety audits to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations. By following these guidelines and prioritizing safety, you can significantly reduce the risk of tether hook failure and protect yourself and your crew from potential harm.
