The sea calls to those who listen. It speaks of freedom, adventure, and the unknown. We are Daria, Chris, and Jasper - we sail with two golden retrievers, Hachi and Luna. We recently lost our Bernese Mountain Dog, Mimsy. (RIP 09.02.2025). Our floating home, Ragdoll, has taken us on an incredible journey across the Atlantic coast, from the west coasts of Scotland to the sun-drenched waters of the Mediterranean. For two years, we lived aboard a 47ft monohull. Now, we’ve started on a new adventure aboard our 2008 Fountaine Pajot Orana 44, embracing the beauty, chaos, and unpredictability of life at sea. Full-time work, homeschooling, storms, sunsets—this is our reality. No script. No certainty. Just wind, waves, and the endless blue. Join us as we navigate life on the water, one adventure at a time. 💙 Enjoy our content? Don’t be a stranger! Subscribe, hit that like button, and ring the bell so you never miss an episode. Your support means the world to us, and we love hearing from you in the comments! 🐾 Who are we? We’re a family of three with two adventure-loving dogs. Sailing with pets isn’t always easy, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. We started our journey exploring the remote and breathtaking Scottish isles before setting course for the Mediterranean in 2023. With no fixed route, we go where the wind and life take us. ⛵ Ragdoll is now a 2008 Fountaine Pajot Orana 44, a catamaran that gives us more space, comfort, and stability as we continue our life at sea. IN THIS VIDEO: ticking to our preference for short daytime hops, a five-hour sail from Saint Lucia brought us back to the lush shores of Martinique. First stop: Anse Dufour, a quiet anchorage known for calm waters and decent snorkeling. It was a brief visit, and after one night, we continued north to Saint Pierre. Once Martinique’s capital, Saint Pierre was destroyed in 1902 when Mount Pelée erupted. Walking its rebuilt streets was a powerful reminder of resilience. Life aboard continued: Ann skillfully patched a torn cushion, and Dennis knocked out small maintenance tasks as we headed toward Guadeloupe to meet family, then on to Sint Maarten for repairs before our Atlantic crossing. Technically, our CopperCoat hull coating is holding up well—it keeps marine growth at bay, helps us maintain speed, and can last up to ten years with proper care. This time, cleaning it was easy: just a scraper and green scrubbie. Not all news was good, though. We discovered damage to our port daggerboard, likely from a fishing trap near Ilet Pigeon. A frustrating find, but part of the reality of life at sea. ✅ A walk through the resilient town of Saint Pierre, Martinique ✅ Snorkeling with marine life in the calm, turquoise Anse Dufour ✅ A behind-the-scenes look at our boat damage and how we handled it ✅ Honest moments of problem-solving, reflection, and gratitude ✅ The ups and downs of real-world sailing life ✅ This isn’t just a travel vlog — it’s a raw, real, and beautiful slice of life at sea. 👇 Comment: What would YOU do if your daggerboard cracked mid-adventure? 🔔 Subscribe to follow the GTFOplan and experience freedom, exploration, and sailing resilience. CURRENT LOCATION: https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/SV-GTFO/ ABOUT OUR CATAMARAN: We love our new Balance 482 - it's a perfect size for a cruising couple to handle and is a great "balance" of performance and comfort. One of our favorite features is the excellent ventilation since we mostly live as "hookers" (aka at anchor) where the boat automatically turns into the wind so we stay cool and we don't need to battle mold. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for our dream boat, sold nearly everything we owned, and shipped the rest to Cape Town, South Africa. After a safari and time exploring Cape Town, we moved aboard and began our journey. We sailed to Saint Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Noronha (Brazil), then across the Atlantic to Martinique, Sint Maarten, the US and British Virgin Islands, and through the Bahamas, including Inagua, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, the Exumas, and Eleuthera. We eventually made landfall in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Both of us grew up as Army brats. Dennis (the Colonel) served 30 years in the US Army—his retirement pension helped us retire in our 50s. Ann (the ship's Captain) worked in test automation using Python and Java. We met on Match.com, where Ann’s profile read: “Do you want to sail the world with me?” Ann introduced Dennis to sailing, and he quickly embraced the GTFOplan of early retirement and global adventure. Years of saving, living on one income, and cutting back on everything made our dream—a Balance 482 catamaran—a reality. Sailing my 2010 Precision 18 sailboat downwind on a high-altitude Rocky Mountain lake under a double-reefed mainsail in heavy winds. My preference when sailing downwind in heavy air is to reef the mainsail and keep the wind on the port or starboard quarter. On this particular day, the winds were frequently shifting by up to 40 degrees, so keeping the wind on the quarter reduced the chances of the wind shifting behind the stern and causing an unintended or crash gybe. I don't use a boom preventer on my boat because my lake is very small and it's just another line to get fouled on the boat--just my personal preference for my sailing situation. Subscribe and follow @ColoradoSailing on YouTube for more original sailing videos, gear, boat maintenance, sailing tips and travel content as I sail my Precision 18 trailer sailer and Precision 16 sailing dinghy in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and South Dakota. #sailingchannel #coloradosailing #extremesports #sailing #mainsailonly

We sail up the East coast of Australia , stopping at some iconic places like Percy Yacht Club to leave our mark. A warning about sharks in the water at Sawmill Bay in the Whitsundays means we decide to climb the peak rather than go swimming, even though it is pouring with rain. On our way to Cairns, the wind dies so we stop at a random anchorage to rest and enjoy the sunset but this time we really do spot a shark at the waters edge so we have to work out how to get back in our dinghy and to our boat without becoming prey to this potentially hangry shark! We were quoted over €20,000 to install solar onto our new yacht! 😱 We thought this was a crazy price, so we did it ourselves (with a little bit of help)! After months of planning, researching, and wrestling with logistics, we’ve finally done it — our solar power system is officially installed on the boat! 🌞⚓ This has been one of the biggest challenges we've faced in transitioning to life aboard and ensuring we can live sustainably and independently off-grid. In this video, we take you through the steps of the installation and show how it all came together. Whether you're planning your own solar installation or just curious about how it works on a boat, we hope our experience helps and inspires you. Facing the challenges of solo sailing as a female sailor, I navigated the highs and lows of single-handed sailing while tackling DIY boat repair projects, from engine fixes to full boat refits on a budget. My life aboard was a mix of adventure and reflection, shaping an independent woman’s story of resilience, personal growth, and embracing the sailing lifestyle. Along the way, I became an ocean conservation activist with In Mocean, stumbled across my dog Boga, and discovered the joys and challenges of sailing with a dog. Now, I’m exploring a new chapter, having jumped aboard my partner’s Hallberg Rassy Rasmus with Boga and his Australian Kelpie, Jango. Together, we face the unique dynamics and challenges of sailing as a couple, balancing off-grid life, sustainable sailing, and the demands of long-term cruising. If you’re interested in remote sailing adventures, authentic sailing stories, and the realities of living on a sailboat, this channel offers a glimpse into the world of DIY projects, the sailing lifestyle, and life’s transformative moments on the water. You know what they say: “BOAT” stands for “Break Out Another Thousand.” While we were anchored in the Dry Tortugas, I got our Spectra watermaker back online. This week, back in Key West, we’re troubleshooting an issue with the feed pump pressure switch, which cuts the watermaker pump in and out depending on the pressure. Unfortunately, the replacement piece is expensive—and it won’t get here anytime soon. In the meantime, I can bypass the switch, as long as I keep a tight eye on the pressure. Boats, man—it’s always something! In between troubleshooting the watermaker and getting ready to sail north for the summer, Robin and I found time to enjoy a sunset cruise aboard the Schooner Hindu. Schooner Hindu is a lovingly restored and historically significant 1925 gaff-rigged schooner with a rich maritime history. It sails out of Provincetown, MA in the summer, and Key West in the winter. Captain Josh sailed us right past Arabella, giving us a unique perspective on our own gaff-rigged wooden sailboat! But, back to boat maintenance… Installing the rudder feedback sensor presented a new challenge. It’s incredible how much I needed to deconstruct just to get that installed properly. Now, mounting the bracket for the auto helm. The bracket is made of anodized aluminum, which gets mounted to a stainless bracket with stainless steel boats. That means I need to isolate and protect the bracket from corrosion. I chose to use Tef-Gel, which is a corrosion eliminator. The other important consideration is that, if we were to lose the bolts, there’s a good chance we would also lose the auto helm. As a backup, I drilled small holes into each bolt, where I can thread a ring through to prevent the bolts from working their way out. Now that the above-deck electronics for the auto helm are hooked up, it’s time to go down below and get the system wired and set up down there. The Garmin Reactor 40 needs to be mounted near the center of the boat. This device gives us information about how the boat is moving in space and time. Now, the auto helm came with a 40 amp breaker—but that didn’t fit into our breaker panel. After speaking with a marine electrician, I feel confident that a 20 amp breaker will do the trick just fine. With this final piece in place, we’re ready to test the auto helm under sail! Unfortunately…more technical difficulties. Somehow, installing the auto helm threw off the header sensor and wind reader. Fortunately, our marine electrician friend, Bob, might be able to help… In the meantime, I took the chance to work on a small project: building a screen drop board to use when it’s hot and buggy. Our acrylic drop board is great, but it doesn’t help much with ventilation—and it’s getting HOT down here in the Keys. I drafted up a shopping list and hit the bricks for a walk to the hardware store, and fun, low-stress, no-surprises project for a change! -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Custom Canvas Cockpit Cover - DIY Marine Sewing on a Yacht! Melissa tackles her toughest project yet, crafting a pro-quality canvas cockpit cover entirely on board with zero workshop or experience. Watch how she measures, cuts, and stitches each panel to create a perfect-0fitting weatherproof cover! We're so blessed. Yes there's a lot of stuff going on in the world to be miserable about, but we're here, on our little, modest, floating home. Enjoying time with each other. Enjoying turning this old boat into a comfy place to live. We're learning more and more that the value in life isn't necessarily from the things we used to think it was. We've changed in so many ways. Of course we're still the same people we were and no doubt will continue to make some of the same mistakes. But we've also changed a LOT. Physically, emotionally, mentally. Life is a continuous journey of discovery. Our life aboard Ocean Melody is bringing that into sharp focus the longer we spend doing this the more strongly we feel about it. It's not a life which would suit everyone and we'd never be "preachy" about it because it's not suitable or possible for a lot of people. But for us, it just works. Anyway, in this episode Melissa takes on our biggest challenge so far and embarks on the HUGE undertaking of designing and making the fabric components for out ULTIMATE HARD DOGER, #SailingUma #ultimateharddodger. Preparing my 2010 Precision 18 sailboat for the upcoming sailing season in Colorado. I noticed my stern horn cleats were loose, the sealant at the deck had been broken, and they needed to be re-bedded. All boats require regular maintenance and re-bedding horn cleats, chain plates and other deck hardware is just a normal part of sailboat maintenance and ownership. Since the factory installation of the horn cleats only used stainless steel washers as backing, I decided to add a 1/2" HDPE board as a backing block to help strengthen the mounting location. I used JB Marine Weld epoxy and 3M 5200 sealant along with new stainless bolts, washers and lock nuts for this project. #lakesailing #mountainsailing #sailing #boatmaintenance #howto #boatrepair
