Sailing my 2010 Precision 18 sailboat on a high-altitude (8,601ft) Rocky Mountain lake. This episode features late summer sailing on the last Wednesday of August. Late summer and early fall are the best time to sail in Colorado, because there are fewer afternoon thunderstorms and calmer winds. This time of year is when I start sailing from sunrise to sunset and get full 12-hour days on the lake. And since it's a weekday, I have the lake practically to myself. The episode features plenty of natural beauty, small coves, mountain views, and wind and water sounds. Subscribe and follow @ColoradoSailing on YouTube for more original sailing videos, gear, boat maintenance, sailing tips and travel content as I sail my Precision 18 trailer sailer and Precision 16 sailing dinghy in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and South Dakota. #sailing #lakesailing #mountainsailing #saillife #sailingchannel #coloradosailing
In this episode of Sailing the East Podcast, host Bela Musits continues his engaging conversation with Robert Sweet, a passionate sailor, who lives in Pittsburgh and keeps his boat in the Bahamas. In this installment, Bela and Bob explore: Life on the water – Bob shares stories from his experiences of sailing in the Bahamas. He reflects on what makes the journey rewarding, from the people you meet in marinas to the ever–changing landscapes of the islands. Long Distance Cruising - When you live in Pittsburgh but your boat is hundred of miles away. How do you plan your trips? Getting to the boat. Lessons for boaters – From navigation and seamanship to understanding weather and safety, Bob discusses what every sailor and powerboater should keep in mind before taking on longer passages. Owning and maintaining a boat – Bela and Bob talk about the realities of boat ownership, the costs and responsibilities involved, and why preparation is key to enjoying time on the water without unnecessary stress. Community and connection – Whether it’s cruising with friends, joining yacht clubs, or meeting fellow loopers along the way, Bob emphasizes that boating is not only about the voyage but also the shared stories and friendships built along the way. Throughout the conversation, Bela guides listeners to think about the parallels between cruising and life itself — patience, problem–solving, and finding joy in the journey rather than just the destination. For sailors and powerboaters alike, this episode provides inspiration and practical takeaways. Is this the ultimate off-grid water solution for boat life? We've finally solved the biggest problem every boater faces: running out of fresh water. For years, we've been rationing every drop, planning our entire route around the next water point. In this video, we install and review the OffGridWater 3-stage filtration and reverse osmosis system, a complete game-changer that has given us total water freedom. We're turning dirty canal and river water into a limitless supply of pure, safe drinking water right from our narrowboat. If you're tired of water anxiety, you need to see this. Imagine taking endless hot showers, using the washing machine whenever you want, and never having to conserve water again. This isn't a dream—it's our new reality. We'll show you exactly how this powerful watermaker works, from the initial filtration of river water (Stage 1) to the final purification with the impressive reverse osmosis unit (Stage 3). Is a DIY water system worth it, or is this pre-built solution the key to unlimited off-grid living? Sailing to paradise: A trip to the ultimate island resort MUSKET COVE | SV MariaNoa | #143e Sailors love to drop anchor in secluded bays and experience the world where no one else can go. Life can be spartan at times due to a lack of supplies, sleep is patchy in wind and swell, and movement is often restricted. So it's no surprise that we sailors don't turn down the chance to share the comfort and luxury of a vacation resort with other tourists, but welcome it with open arms. In most resorts, sailors and the money they bring with them are not welcome. Only a few resort managers understand that sailors are quite wealthy, usually very sociable, and that their yachts are a welcome decoration in the harbor basin. Musket Cove is one such resort. ▬ BLOG ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ You can find the blog post for this video here: https://sailing-marianoa.de/musket-cove/ ▬ CHAPTERS ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 00:00 Introduction 02:43 Marina Office 03:11 Yacht Club Island Bar 03:46 Maintenance Underwater Hull 06:22 Traders Cafe 08:25 Staff Apartments 09:18 Brodies Rock 10:48 False Pass 11:22 Maintenance Balmar 11:52 Airstrip 12:16 Golf Course 12:51 Anchorage 13:46 Lomani Lookout 14:16 Lomani Island Resort 15:32 Plantation Island Resort 15:50 Black Coral Restaurant 16:13 Dicks Bar & Restaurant ▬ CIRCUMNAVIGATION ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ For many years, sailing around the world had been my (Hannes) big dream, which I wanted to realize when I reached retirement age due to my job. But sometimes life doesn't go as planned. In the spring of 2020, I was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Suddenly, my life accelerated considerably. I sold my house, cleared out my belongings, and began to acquire mountains of ship equipment. We planned to cast off at the beginning of March 2021 – and that's what happened, despite COVID-19. Brigitta was completely surprised, of course, even though sailing around the world was a much better fit for her professional life than mine. But in the following six months, Brigitta has made amazing progress and is just as excited about our big adventure as I am. We have now been traveling for a total of four and a half years. One adventure follows another, and we enjoy every day anew. In search of freedom and independence, a thirst for adventure and a love of nature, we – Brigitta and Hannes – are sailing around the world together. For this circumnavigation, we bought the Lagoon 40 MariaNoa catamaran, with which we set off on the Barfußroute from the French Atlantic coast at the beginning of March 2021. Brigitta and Hannes are enjoying their stay at Muscat Cove Resort in the Fiji Islands and are reporting on the impressive bay in their travel blog. They have even decided to become lifetime members. A touch of luxury on their trip! Do you have any specific questions? We'd be happy to answer them at MariaNoa@gmx.de. ▬ PLAN INTERNATIONAL ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ I have been volunteering for Plan International for many years. Plan International is one of the world's largest children's charities, alongside UNICEF, Save the Children, World Vision, and SOS Children's Villages. On our trip, we don't just want to relax in dreamy bays, but also visit our sponsored children in Plan's program countries and volunteer to document the work being done there. Plan International is an international children's charity. Be part of our journey on the catamaran MariaNoa and subscribe to our channel!

Come along on a wild ride as Windpuff gets towed by Herby’s dad’s boat. Along the way, Herby works on the bulwarks and deals with a free spinning propeller shaft, as well as copious amounts of water that splashes onto the deck but can’t currently drain away. Let me know in the comments section your ideas for a good cabin layout that will sleep four people as well as be good for bluewater cruising. What you'll see in this episode: • How to restore and cold-zinc coat a CQR anchor • A look at our homemade lightning grounding setup • Boat life gardening: replanting herbs aboard a sailboat • Behind-the-scenes of liveaboard life with Karen & Steve • Some dancing, of course! Refinishing Our Anchor + DIY Lightning Protection | Sailing Intermission In this episode of Sailing Intermission, we take on a few important boat projects while living aboard our sailboat Isabella. First up: restoring our 66 lb CQR anchor! Under Karen’s capable guidance, we drop it into the dinghy, sand off the rust, and apply a cold zinc coating. Getting it back aboard wasn’t easy, but we made it happen—with a bit of teamwork and muscle. We also revisit our DIY lightning protection system—yes, the one made from car jumper cables connecting the rigging to the ocean. Is it effective? We’re not totally sure, but we’re doing what we can to protect our mast and electronics in case of a strike. Out on deck, it was time to replace our tired herb garden. We replant fresh basil and throw in some dill too. Gotta keep the boat meals flavorful! As always, there’s plenty of fun, dancing, and a bit of cheeky humor. Karen narrates this episode. 👉 First Start & Running Test — Will She Fire? After months of refit, today’s the moment — the final fittings, last bolts, and our first push of the start button. Will she fire? In this episode, we install the last components needed to bring our new Nanni N4.65 to life aboard our ex-Vendée Globe Open 66 — our family home and ocean racer turned cruiser. From connecting the control panel and gear lever, to bleeding the fuel system and prepping the exhaust, it’s the final stretch before that satisfying first rumble. We’ll show how we: ⚙️ Completed the fuel, cooling, and electrical systems 🧰 Installed the Racor filter with quick-change valves 🌊 Set up the raw-water cooling and siphon break 🔋 Connected batteries, control panel & gear lever 🔥 Filled and bled the diesel circuit before the first start It’s the most nerve-wracking (and exciting) moment of any repower — and a huge milestone in getting NV back in the water. 📍 Filmed in northern Borneo, where we’re refitting our Open 66 into a fast, off-grid family cruiser. 5 options for deck line fitting is discussed in this video.Boat Builder Bob Emser will show the process of installing a deck line fittings on a boat, from understanding what it is to completing the installation. A deck line fitting is a hardware component mounted on a Kayak's deck used to secure lines (bungie cord), often for safety lines, rigging, or gear attachments. It's essential for managing deck layout and ensuring clean, organized, and safe line routing. “If you’re going to make it, make it beautiful.” Bob Emser Joe Dowling's Website https://www.humpbackkayaks.com As an advocate for backyard boat builders I offer a free 30 minute chat about your project. Çanakkale Boğazı'ndan çıkıp 36 saat içerisinde Knidos Burnu'nu döndüm. Bir günde 160 mil yol yaptım. Fırtına ilk 24 saat şiddetini hiç kaybetmedi. Rüzgar hızı Fourni'de 50 knot'a kadar çıktı. Çanakkale çıkışından sonra Midilli'ye gelirken dalgalar iyice büyüdü. Gece dalgalar daha sakin olur diye Çeşme kanalına girmek istedim ama İzmir körfezinden gelen büyük dalgalara karşı ilerleyemedim. Tekrar Sakız Adası'nın batısına döndüm. Gün batımı ile Sakız'ın kel tepelerinden 45 knot rüzgar indirdi. Bir rüzgarsızlık ve tekrar stabil 35 knot rüzgar Sakız'ın güneyinden geçip Fourni'ye rota tuttum. Sabaha karşı yorgunluktan bayılmışım. Fourni'yi geçtikten sonra hava sakinledi, Knidos'a vardığımda artık kalmıştı.
After months sailing through remote Indonesia with no access to parts or services, we finally reached Thailand — and dove headfirst into a jam-packed week of boat projects.
In this episode, we tackle a mini refit sprint:
• Fresh dinghy chaps to protect our hardworking tender
• A brand new helm enclosure for shade and safety
• A complete shower refit (x3!) to freshen up life onboard
• Professional mainsail repair to prepare for our Indian Ocean crossing
It wasn’t all work — there were still sunsets, surf, and family moments in between the hustle. But with only a short window before sailing south to Malaysia and flying to New Zealand, it was all hands on deck to get Happy Days ready for the miles ahead.
⚓ Subscribe to follow our family’s circumnavigation as we balance boat life, homeschooling, surfing, and exploring some of the most remote places on earth.

There is no AAA in the middle of the ocean, so ensuring that our engines are in the best shape possible is a priority. This extended video is a step-by-step reassembly of one of our Yanmar 4JH4-TE marine diesel engines. In this video we clean and service critical components like seals, valves, oil cooler, injectors, and motor mounts. This process will help extend the life of our Yanmar engines, improve fuel efficiency, and ensure reliability. Building the perfect hardtop for my Bavaria 55 here in Bali. The weather has been a bigger challenge than expected, and the last weeks have been extreme with serious flooding and dthe eath toll is still rising. Making it ridiculous for me to complain on being delayed by bad weather, knowing how much pain many are experiencing on this island at the moment.
Sailing in a subtropical climate requires good protection, not only shade from the sun but also from extreme UV. Canvas doesn't last long in a sub-tropical climate, and I was tired of leaks and repairs. So now I am making a permanent solution. I'm sharing my production methods, setbacks, and progress, and basically all you want to know about my Hardtop project for my Bavaria 55 Cruiser. This is not a how-to guide for building a HARD DODGER or HARDTOP. It is a journey showing how I do it in my way. Without claiming this is the way to do it.

ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
I'm a sailor with a YouTube channel and not a YouTuber. Sailing around the world in a Bavaria 55 Cruiser, mostly solo, making videos whenever we have time for it.
Comfortable at sea with 4 decades of sailing experience and hundreds of thousands of miles behind me.
Even though this is season 8 on YouTube, I did not make that many videos in the beginning, and obviously not from my entire sailing life. Before full-time sailing 7 years ago, I sailed several seasons in the Mediterranean, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing and racing ever since. I also have more than 10 years of experience as a captain in search and rescue at sea in Norway.
We have some leaking holes on our Lagoon Catamaran.. In this video we talk you through what we are working on, while our sailboat is hauled out for maintenance. Saildrives, Antifouling Paint, Thruhulls, Keel damage.. it's all part of it. Enjoy our next episode of Sailing Around the World, only just beginning here in Cyprus! Come learn and experience this with us. Subscribe and Enjoy! I must admit, some of our inspiration comes from Sailing La Vagabonde, Sailing Zatara, Sailing Holly Blue, and World Towning.. although we've been talking about sailing around the world for about 3 years now.. it suddenly is coming a lot closer, and fast!! If you are interested in sailing catamarans, or the cruising lifestyle, we love to talk about it, so leave us a comment, or connect with us on Patreon. Welcome back to Newfoundland aboard Arabella! This week, we’re traveling by land and by sea, making our final passage before winter settles in for the season. While Robin took the ferry back to Nova Scotia to shuttle the truck, I single-handed Arabella from Isle aux Morts to Codroy. Robin met me there. We had a few days to kill in Codroy while waiting for a weather window for the passage up to Bay of Islands, so we decided to check out the local Starlite trail. The views were incredible! The landscape in Newfoundland is unlike any we’ve seen before. Even Akiva seems to be quite at home here! We also walked down to the Cape Anguille Lighthouse, which was perfectly picturesque and idyllic. The last thing we had to do before making our final passage is shuttle the truck one last time. Robin drove to Corner Brook and rode her bike back to Codroy via the Trans-Canada Highway. The ride was about 90 miles long, but a strong headwind added a layer of challenge to the effort. By the time Robin pedaled into the marina at Codroy, she was very ready for a hot cup of coffee! We wasted no time setting sail—as soon as Robin got back from her ride, we dropped the dock lines and took off. The sail was smooth and uneventful, minus a needle nose fish jumping on deck in the middle of the night. We sailed past the MSC Baltic III shipwreck, and into the Bay of Islands with its steep, dramatic cliffs. Our plan was to drop anchor at Woods Island, but we needed to enter the harbor carefully—there are some uncharted rocks at the harbor entrance. Fortunately, locals had installed range markers on the hillside to help boats like us line up our approaches safely. Woods Island has a healthy moose population—we followed moose tracks through the island’s lovely network of hiking and ATV trails. We also treasure hunted along the beaches, finding sea glass and remnants from shipwrecks. After Woods Island, we head to the Bay of Islands Yacht Club, which will be home for the winter. We have not stayed in any one place for more than three weeks since last November, and Corner Brook seems like the perfect place to put down roots for a while. I break out the winter dock lines and our extra fenders, and Arabella is safe and sound for the season. In Corner Brook, we start hunting down the new Newfoundland rock climbing guidebook. We are eager to get out climbing while the weather allows! Tune in next week and join us on a backpacking trip through Gros Morne National Park. -------------------------- Episode #364 Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! I've upgraded the Victron Ekrano display and added a Victron BMV-712 Smart battery monitor for the House 48 volt bank. Currently charging from shorepower so we can set the battery monitor to a known 100% battery state. Also connected 2 more 175 watt solar panels (now 1130watts in total). Just waiting for Sotrm Amy, tonight potentially gusts up to 70mph, then a lull before potentially stronger winds Friday afternoon/evening. Hopefully hugely significant delivery arriving tomorrow (TNT were delayed today, presumably by the weather). We are now living aboard our Rival 38 Centre Cockpit full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. Our biggest regrets (and the regrets we thought we’d have!) since buying our catamaran! We’ve been living full-time aboard our Excess 11 catamaran for just over 6 months now, and while it’s been the most incredible adventure of our lives… we’ve definitely made some mistakes along the way! In this week’s episode, we’re sharing our biggest regrets since moving onto Rúna — the bad decisions we’ve made and the things we really wish we did differently, but we’re also going to share some of our more controversial choices that everyone told us we’d regret, but instead, turned out to be the best decisions we’ve made yet! We'll cover everything from watermakers and washing machines to anchors and delivery crews. We’ll be totally honest about the things we’d change if we could go back. If you’re planning to buy a yacht or dreaming of setting sail one day, this video should give you a real insight into the realities of life aboard and hopefully save you from making the same mistakes we did! Have you ever made a decision on your boat that you wish you could undo? Or one that everyone warned you against that actually worked out? Share your story in the comments — we’d love to hear them, and they might help someone else too. Disaster in the Bay of Biscay video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OF6MqVXvT0&t=24s Hey! We’re Ruth and Andrew 👋🏼 Earlier this year, after years of dreaming, we left our family, friends and lives in Edinburgh, Scotland, behind as we set off to chase our shared dream of sailing the world. With summer ending faster than we would have liked, we sailed on through Massachusetts. There were too many possible stops to do everything we would have liked, so we chose: Gloucester, Marblehead/Salem, Cape Cod Canal and Cuttyhunk. Then on to Rhode Island with stops in Newport and Block Island. Don't miss Hammond Castle and Newport Cliff Walk! Gloucester - past Ten Pound Island, famous for The Perfect Storm. We picked up a city mooring. https://www.gloucester-ma.gov/179/City-Moorings Our first stop ashore was the Gloucester Fishermen's Memorial. The list of names is staggering: 5,368 men lost between 1716 and 1923. https://www.gloucester-ma.gov/74/Lost-at-Sea Hammond Castle, built between 1926 and 1929, was the fortress of John Hays Hammond Jr., the "Father of Radio Control." This is the genius who, with hundreds of patents to his name, successfully piloted a full-sized ship from Gloucester to Boston at just 26 years old using only radio control. It’s a MUST see. Read about more of his inventions here. https://hammondcastle.org/curators-picks/ Marblehead & Salem - Nothing prepares you for 2,000 mooring balls packed along its 14 miles of shoreline. https://marbleheadma.gov/harbormaster/ The Cape Cod Canal: At 7.5 miles long, 32 feet deep, and the world’s widest sea canal at 540 feet, its currents are formidable. We sailed down from Marblehead on a screaming 25-knot beam reach, our SOG hitting a thrilling 9 knots. We shot the entrance perfectly, but deep inside, the tide turned. For about an hour, we slogged against wind and tide, making a painful 3 knots while cyclists on the shore path breezed past us—that was embarrassing! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_crossings_of_the_Cape_Cod_Canal After a call night in Onset Harbor, we weighed anchor at dawn for a glorious sail across Buzzards Bay. We made landfall at Cuttyhunk in a thick fog, but the next day was beautiful for hiking and enjoying the views. Our passage continued to the epicenter of American sailing: Newport, Rhode Island. Plenty of restaurants and shopping of course. But Our favorite shore leave was the Cliff Walk, a spectacular 3.5-mile path with panoramic ocean views, stunning, century-old Gilded Age mansions, and beautiful = well - rocks!. https://www.discovernewport.org/things-to-do/cliff-walk/ Our final port of call was Block Island. We dropped the hook in the Great Salt Pond and rented scooters to tour the island, completing the 10-mile loop past Monhegan Bluffs lighthouse and the Overlook. It’s an explorer’s paradise, and it's easy to see why: forty percent of the island is set aside for conservation. We were there when the great fire destroyed the Old Harbor Inn. You can read about it here. https://blockislandguide.com/2024/07/11/block-island-fire-does-not-stop-shops-from-selling-their-wares-in-2024/ But a sailor can't stay in one port for long. The charts are out, and a new course is laid. Next stop: Long Island Sound! This episode discusses a sailboat steering ("helming") technique I learned from one of my good friends and sailing mentors, Scott Tobin. Scott is an experienced sailor who frequently crewed on private yachts moving between the U.S. mainland and the Caribbean. He also solo sailed his own 40+ foot yacht in the Atlantic for many years. When I first got my boat, I called on Scott to help me improve my heavy air sailing skills. On one outing on my Precision 18 "Mandatory Fun", Scott noticed I was constantly correcting the course of the boat anytime the bow strayed away from the point we were heading to. In the sailing world, this is called "oversteer" or "oversteering." He told me to just "hold the tiller steady" and see how the boat reacted. With no steering input, the boat just naturally came back to the intended course just from the change of the wind on the sails and the angle of the hull moving through the water. On a sailboat, all the forces involved naturally want to be in balance and any change in the forces effects the opposing forces, which has a tendency to bring the boat back to equilibrium. Amazing! Sailboats are so cool. #sailingchannel #coloradosailing #sailing #mountainsailing #sailingtips #sailinglife #learntosail

In this episode, we remain in Phuket awaiting our shipping date to the Mediterranean Sea. While here, lots of little things happen. Including Boat Maintenance Projects like: - Fixing the air conditioner raw water pump; - Troubleshooting some generator issues; - Inspecting and cleaning out the main fuel tanks; - Sewing stern shades; - Repainting the clear coat on the carbon fibre longeron. Kevin did some training, including the Approved Engine Course #1 (AEC1), and Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (PSCRB) courses. And we explored a bit of Phuket, visiting the Cashew Nut Factory, attending a quiz night at the Green Man pub, and touring by scooter. Thanks for following!
