The first piece of the wheelhouse, cockpit enclosure is finished and fitted :-) It's amazing! We are now living aboard our Rival 38 Centre Cockpit full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. We have a frequently updated blog at https://sustainablesailing.net with membership options and a weekly newsletter at £2 per month for Early Bird Supporters. Our free Sustainable Sailing book is at: https://sustainablesailing.codeberg.p... Or visit our shop at https://sustainablesailing.teemill.com/ for great hoodies, t-shirts and bags. When we bought Vida in August 2019 she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all-electric (motor, cooking etc). #Handwerk #Abenteuer #DIY

We are Eric, Kimberley, and Distin. We are from Alaska. We started our adventures in Alaska on our Nordhavn 55. We sold her and are now beginning our adventures on a new to us In this episode, we set sail from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and make our way around the iconic Cape Sable before dropping anchor in Negro Harbor. After a peaceful night on the hook, we continue our journey to the charming town of Shelburne, Nova Scotia — a place rich in history and full of surprises. Do You Hate Sanding? I don't! Sanding epoxy on a kayak is more than a step in construction—it is a quiet act of reflection. What begins as a practical task becomes a meditation on patience, imperfection, and transformation. Join Boat Builder Bob Emser as he demonstrates the proper way to sand the fill coat of epoxy on the Wood Duck Kayak. In addition a cleaver way of attaching foot braces. “If you’re going to make it, make it beautiful.” Bob Emser As an advocate for backyard boat builders I offer a free 30 minute chat about your project. Join the Crew on Patreon http://www.patreon.com/WhiteSpotPirates Sailing life in Gran Canaria brings us not only beautiful anchorages but also a chance to dive into local culture. While anchored in the south of the island, we joined the Santa Águeda festival, a lively celebration of the fishermen traditions of the Canary Islands. The streets filled with music, food, and laughter as locals dressed in traditional clothing pulled carriages through the village and turned every corner into a spontaneous concert. Being part of this raw and heartfelt tradition was one of those priceless moments where sailing life connects us with the true spirit of a place. We are full-time boat people, sailing a Hallberg Rassy Rasmus on a journey that has taken us from the Mediterranean Sea, along the coast of Morocco, and now through the Canary Islands as we continue island hopping and exploring remote sailing destinations. Facing the challenges of solo sailing as a female sailor, I navigated the highs and lows of single-handed sailing while tackling DIY boat repair projects, from engine fixes to full boat refits on a budget. My life aboard was a mix of adventure and reflection, shaping an independent woman’s story of resilience, personal growth, and embracing the sailing lifestyle. Along the way, I became an ocean conservation activist with In Mocean, stumbled across my dog Boga, and discovered the joys and challenges of sailing with a dog. Now, I’m exploring a new chapter, having jumped aboard my partner’s Hallberg Rassy Rasmus with Boga and his Australian Kelpie, Jango. Together, we face the unique dynamics and challenges of sailing as a couple, balancing off-grid life, sustainable sailing, and the demands of long-term cruising. We have filmed our journey from looking for boats, buying the boat and downsizing our house so we can liveaboard and all the messy wonderful life stuff in between. Join us now as we start to get our boat prepared for liveaboard life. As new sailors we want to share all of our learnings and keep it real in our videos. We want to show step by step what it takes to choose a boat, buy the boat and learn how to sail. Our sailing learning curve is steep so come along with us as we learn and grow as liveaboard sailors. We promise you will have a laugh! Seabird, our 1€ sailboat came without a mast and it had the mast off for 15 years. We didn't know if the rigging was right or if the mast was in really good condition... It took us quite some time to work on the mast and rebuild everything. And last week you saw us putting it on, but you also saw us making some mistakes. The rig is not quite right. And this week is all about how we're going to fix it and if we can fix it. 🌊 *Join our journey* as we restore Seabird from an abandoned sailboat to a home on the sea! We're tackling one of the biggest challenges of living on a boat: creating functional storage without adding weight. In this episode, we design, build, and install a custom composite shelf and cupboard unit in our sailboat's cabin. You'll see the entire process, from the initial challenge of "eyeballing" the fit in a space with countless angles, to cutting composite panels with the right blades, and the time-saving trick of pre-painting components before installation. We focus on making it as strong and lightweight as possible, with the final primed shelf weighing just 1.55kg! What you'll learn in this video: The challenge of making things look right vs. being technically right on a boat. How to choose the right jigsaw blades for cutting carbon fibre and composite panels. Our method for gluing and assembling composite parts on the bench. Why we prime and paint before installing components in tight spaces. Using peel ply for a perfect finish on fibreglass tape. This custom shelf adds crucial storage for books and gear, integrates into the boat's structure, and proves that you don't have to sacrifice function for performance. YouTube Video Chapters 00:00 - 01:00: Introduction: Maximizing Space on a Boat The host introduces the episode's goal: to show the design and construction of lightweight, strong cupboards and shelves. 01:00 - 04:16: The Challenge of "Eyeballing" in a Boat Fitting the shelf in a space with many conflicting angles and slopes. The importance of making it look right, not just be technically correct. 04:16 - 06:06: Cutting Composite Panels: Tools & Blades A discussion on the best tools and jigsaw blades for cutting carbon fibre and composite materials without damaging them. 06:06 - 07:14: First Fit Check and Scribing Checking the first cut, dealing with gaps, and explaining how composites allow for filling and fixing imperfections. 07:14 - 11:14: Gluing, Assembling, and Pre-Painting Assembling the shelf unit on the bench and the clever step of priming it before installation to save time. 11:14 - 13:13: The Weight & Pre-Painting Advantage Weighing the finished shelf (1.55kg) and explaining the benefits of pre-painting hard-to-reach areas. 13:13 - 15:04: Final Glue-In and Taping The shelf is glued into place. Using peel ply on the tape for a smooth, easy-to-finish surface. 15:04 - 16:43: Fairing, Sanding, and Final Thoughts The final stages of fairing and sanding. Recap of the benefits: functional, lightweight, custom storage. 16:43 - 18:49: Project Wrap-Up & Teaser for Next Week The finished painted shelf. A teaser for the next video topic: designing and building custom composite hatches to solve water leakage issues. Teaser for Next Video: We're solving a major issue on board next time: keeping the wet stuff out! We'll dive into the design and build of our own custom composite hatches. After sailing thousands of miles, Steve and Robin embark on the final leg of their journey—navigating their sailboat, Arabella, toward her winter home in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. In this episode, they prepare for a crossing over the notorious Cabot Strait, also known as “The Chuck,” known for its unpredictable, rough waters. Despite the choppy seas and sleepless night, they make it safely to Isle aux Morts, a mountainous area steeped in maritime history and a place of stunning natural beauty. Join them as they explore the rugged, foggy coast of Newfoundland, learn about a famous historical shipwreck rescue, and prepare Arabella for a winter of rest after 500 days of continuous sailing. -------------------------- Ep. 363 Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Owning a sailboat in your 20s isn’t always cocktails at sunset and endless holidays 🌅⛵️. The reality? Freedom, chaos, and non-stop boat projects. We’re Camille (American) and Jesse (Australian), a young couple who bought a 39-foot sailboat in Malaysia with zero sailing experience and a furry little crew member, Shelly 🐾. In this video, we share the honest truth about sailboat life: ⚓ The projects we didn’t expect (broken bilge pump, clogged toilet, leaky gearbox) ⚓ Why maintenance is half the journey ⚓ How we’re learning to sail from scratch ⚓ Why, despite the chaos, it’s worth it for the freedom and adventure If you’ve ever dreamed of buying a sailboat young, this is what it’s really like. 👉 Subscribe to follow our journey as we sail the world, fix our floating home, and chase waves and sunsets. After a couple of weeks of boat work on the hard, our wooden sailboat W. Grebe finally returns to the Pacific. In this episode, we wrap up the last jobs before launch: fresh bottom paint, checking and replacing zincs, and testing the electrical bonding system. These are the unglamorous but essential parts of owning a classic boat — the work that keeps her safe, sound, and ready for sea. This video covers: - Applying new bottom paint to protect the hull - Inspecting and replacing the zincs (sacrificial anodes) - Testing the electrical bonding to make sure the system works properly - Final checks before the launch - The big moment: W. Grebe’s first splash back into the water For anyone who’s owned or loved a wooden sailboat, you know the mix of nerves and joy on launch day. She’s been blocked up on the hard for weeks, maybe months, and suddenly she’s rolling toward the travel lift. The straps tighten, the boat rises, and then — she’s floating again! For us, this isn’t just another maintenance job. W. Grebe is part of a much bigger story. She’s a classic wood gaff-rigged sailboat, built here in British Columbia. Mary and I are preparing her for the voyage of a lifetime — to sail her from Canada across the Atlantic Ocean to Scotland. Every bit of sanding, painting, and testing brings us closer to that horizon. We’ve learned that the romance of wooden sailboat life is built on days like this. It’s not all sunsets and sails — it’s also antifouling paint, zinc dust on your hands, and double-checking wires in the bilge. The truth is: without these small victories, the bigger adventures never happen. If you’re new here, welcome aboard. This channel is where we share the real process of living with and sailing a wooden boat — the work, the adventure, and the dream of crossing an ocean together. If you love: Classic wooden boats Gaff-rigged sailboats Restoration projects Real sailing life in the Pacific Northwest Stories of preparing for amazing adventures …then you’re in the right place. We’re based now on Vancouver Island, Canada, and every video adds another piece to the journey. Whether it’s sanding and painting on the hard, rigging the sails, or setting out into the Pacific, this is all part of the same story: keeping W. Grebe alive, seaworthy, and moving closer to Scotland. 👉 If you enjoy this video, hit subscribe and follow along as we prepare W. Grebe for her voyage. Each week we’ll share the next step — sometimes it’s hands-on restoration, sometimes it’s sailing, sometimes it’s just us figuring out how to live this life afloat. ⚓ Thank you for being here and supporting this adventure. Don’t miss this interview with Paul Hesse. He tells of his sailing adventures on a Viking ship across the Atlantic and North Sea; going on the old Norse route from Norway to Greenland in a 40 ft. sailboat; and some of his heavy weather experiences on Lake Superior. What he did and saw was extraordinary. The Viking ship unfortunately cracked a plank in the North Atlantic. With a large pump to keep ahead of the incoming water, the crew successfully caulked the plank. However, it required close watching and continuing maintenance. There was, of course, consideration to turn back towards Newfoundland, but the Norwegian skipper just declared: “No! No! No! We’re going to Norway!” And they did. However, Hesse thought his sailing voyage from Norway to Greenland was even more interesting than his Viking voyage. The experience, as well as the scenery, was spectacular. He also touches on sailing Lake Superior with family and friends. He has been out there in some of the heavy weather for which the upper Great Lake is so infamous.

Help to make these videos possible here http://www.patreon.com/WhiteSpotPirates We’ve been cruising the Canary Islands with our two dogs, Jango and Boga, before setting off to explore West Africa. After leaving the sheltered marina in Gran Canaria, we swapped calm docks for rolly anchorages and covered some miles along the coast. Somewhere along the way, Floh decided it was my turn to be tested at the helm—a little sailing couple challenge that put our teamwork to the test. If you enjoy real stories about cruising life with dogs, sailing as a couple, and the ups and downs of living on a sailboat, you’ll feel right at home here. We’ve been busy on Isabella with DIY, topless sunbathing, and fun too. After some detective work we located the source of a small leak in the galley. A boat should not leak! Steve removed the stanchion which was the area where water managed to leak into the galley. He worked his magic and ta-da, no more leak. Still improving the cockpit appearance, we straightened and cleaned a dirty crooked winch handle holder. It looks so much better now. Most exciting of all, we installed a portable washing machine with a spinner. It was touch and go there at first, watch the video to see what happened in the end. With all that DIY, lots of materials and tools get pulled out from everywhere and typically end up in the salon. Moving through that area becomes a hassle. It’s not all work, work, work. We did take some time to visit a few local bars, Karen did some sunbathing and Steve enjoyed the view on and from the boat. Always trying to keep exercise in our routine, Karen proved she can still jump rope, well...kind of. We are so thankful for the support of our subscribers! This week aboard aboard our family sailing vlog, we tackle a big catamaran repair: fixing our broken main halyard at the masthead. Using what was left of the broken halyard, we went up the mast and replace it. It was nerve-wracking but it worked — and we’re back sailing! I was a satisfying DIY catamaran repair win! Between repairs, we explored a tiny shack on a remote Chesapeake beach and were greeted by dolphins on our way into Norfolk, VA. First dolphins we've seen on the boat!!! Why Choose the 1985 Mercury Cruiser (Electric)? This retrofitted 1985 Mercury Cruiser offers a unique blend of vintage style and modern eco-consciousness. Its electric setup is ideal for short, slow cruises (e.g., harbor tours or calm bays), and the $5,000 price point makes it an accessible project boat. However, the 5-hour runtime at 4 knots limits its range, and the original design may not handle 10 people comfortably (more suited for 6-8). It’s a great choice for environmentally conscious boaters or those interested in experimenting with electric propulsion. Below are the links to the equipment used and specs of the boat. Solar Panels https://amzn.to/4mlCGKb M - Series battery switch https://amzn.to/47RsAgB Batteries 12V https://amzn.to/420CMQa Power inverter 5000w https://amzn.to/4nIUZKD Year: 1985 Original Manufacturer: Mercury Marine, in collaboration with various boat builders (e.g., Chris-Craft, Carver, or other OEMs), produced cruisers under the Mercury Cruiser or MerCruiser branding. These were typically equipped with MerCruiser sterndrive engines. Current Configuration: Converted to electric propulsion with a solar panel array, offering 5 hours of runtime at 4 knots. Market Value: $5,000 reflecting its age, condition. Length Overall (LOA): Likely 25-30 feet, based on the size relative to surrounding boats and typical cruiser designs of the era. The exact length isn’t specified, but the cabin and deck layout suggest a mid-sized vessel. Beam: Approximately 8.5-10 feet, common for cruisers to provide stability and interior space. Draft: Around 2.5-3 feet with a sterndrive, allowing access to shallow waters. Hull Material: Fiberglass, standard for Mercury Cruisers of this period. Displacement: Estimated 6,000-8,000 lbs (dry), depending on the model and equipment. Original Engine: Typically powered by a MerCruiser sterndrive, such as a 5.0L V8 (305 cubic inch) or 5.7L V8 (350 cubic inch) gasoline engine, producing 200-260 HP. The 4.7L V8 mentioned doesn’t align with Mercury’s catalog (the closest is the modern 4.6L V8 outboard from 2018), so the original was likely a different displacement. Fuel Capacity: Originally 100-150 gallons (gasoline), now irrelevant with the electric conversion. Water Capacity: Likely 30-50 gallons, typical for cruisers of this size. Cabin: Features a forward cabin with a V-berth or double berth, a compact galley (sink, stove, fridge), and a dinette that converts to additional sleeping space. Cockpit: Open rear deck for socializing or fishing, with potential for a small table or seating. Capacity: Designed for 6-8 people comfortably, with a maximum of 10 possible if equipped with additional seating and adhering to safety regulations (e.g., U.S. Coast Guard capacity plate). The electric conversion might limit load capacity due to battery weight. Benefits Eco-Friendly Cruising: The electric conversion with solar power eliminates fuel costs and emissions, aligning with green boating trends. The 5-hour runtime at 4 knots is suitable for leisurely day trips or harbor exploration. Affordable Entry: At a $5,000 market value, it’s a budget-friendly option for entry-level boating, especially with the added solar investment ($2,500). Low Maintenance: Electric motors require less upkeep than gasoline engines (no oil changes, fewer moving parts), though batteries and solar panels need periodic replacement or cleaning. Quiet Operation: Electric propulsion offers a silent ride, enhancing the experience in quiet anchorages. Retro Charm: The 1985 design retains a classic look, appealing to enthusiasts of vintage boats. Historical Context In the 1980s, Mercury Marine’s MerCruiser division produced sterndrive engines (inboard/outboard systems) for a range of cruisers built by various manufacturers. These boats were popular for their combination of performance and livability, often featuring V8 engines derived from automotive designs (e.g., GM 305 or 350 cubic inch blocks). The 1985 Mercury Cruiser would have been part of this era, offering speeds of 20-30 knots with its original gasoline engine. The conversion to electric power reflects a modern adaptation, likely replacing the sterndrive with an electric motor and integrating solar panels for charging. Maintenance Tips Solar Panels: Regularly clean the panels and check connections to maintain charging efficiency. The $2,500 value suggests a decent-sized array (e.g., 1-2 kW), so ensure it’s securely mounted. Batteries: Inspect and maintain the battery bank (likely lead-acid or lithium) for charge levels and corrosion. Replace every 5-10 years depending on usage. Hull: Check for gelcoat cracks or osmosis, common in 1980s fiberglass hulls, especially if used in saltwater.

Try Huel with 15% OFF today using my code ACORN15 at http://huel.com/ACORN15. Fuel your best performance with Huel today! Minimum order value of $75. This week, we pick up where we left off in Baddeck, NS. Robin continues learning the ropes, opting to “singlehanded” Arabella from Baddeck to Kelly’s Cove, which is the last anchorage before the open North Atlantic ocean. Robin drops the mooring and runs back to take control of the tiller, navigating the mooring field and safely steering Arabella out to the lake. She raises sail, brings Arabella to her destination for the day, and drops anchor in Kelly’s Cove. Kelly’s Cove is a quiet harbor surrounded by the hills of Cape Breton—including a network of ATV trails weaving through the mountains. With the outdoor ban lifted, we decide to do some exploring. The trails are steep and loose, and it feels so good to hike up, up, up, and up. The next day, we weigh anchor again and head into some strong currents in the narrows, but without a wind-over-current situation, we didn’t experience the wild breakers that many people have noted in this section of Bras d’Or Lake. Once into the North Atlantic, we raise sail and make way for North Sydney, NS. From North Sydney, Robin rides her bike 61-miles back to St. Peters to shuttle the truck, and I take the opportunity to tackle a few boat projects from the to-do list, starting with painting our propane tanks with TotalBoat’s TotalProtect. After the propane tanks are looking spiffy again, I tackle the next project: adding nylon rode to our anchor chain. As we head to Newfoundland, the water gets steep-to-shore in many places, and we may need 200’ or 300’ of rode to anchor safely. I consider using an anchor chain splice to connect the rode to the chain, but the fact that it cannot be removed from the chain makes it a poor fit for our needs. A Spectra soft shackle is a better connection for our set up. I get the new anchor rode system installed in the forepeak, and we’re ready to sail this wooden boat across the Cabot Strait to Newfoundland…which we do next week. See you then! -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig.
