BoatUS Magazine's Mark Corke takes you through the steps for how to repair boat gelcoat. This gel coat repair DIY if you need to fix a boat ding, crack, or scratch is not difficult and could save you a lot of money by doing it yourself and still get professional results. The process for repairing gelcoat on a boat (on flat surfaces) starts by preparing the area to be repaired by thoroughly cleaning with soap and water and then acetone. Use a Dremel with a burr bit to open up the repair area, then vacuum the dust. Mix the gelcoat according to manufacturer directions and add any coloring to match your boat's gelcoat. Tap it into the repair and overfill. Once dry, use wet sandpaper to sand it flush with the surrounding surface. Use cutting compound then finish with a little wax to finish it up.👇Scroll down for a complete materials list for tools and materials used in this video. Usually, on boats of this size there are two outboards, but one engine has less cost, less consumes, better performance, lower hydrodynamic resistance and less maintenance and this outboard has also two counter-rotating propellers that balance the propulsion and the boat. Upgrading from a traditional stuffing box, or shaft seal, to a more modern dripless shaft seal will keep the bilge of your boat dry and odor-free. You'll start by removing the coupling from the shaft from the transmission, then remove the old stuffing box. You'll clean up the shaft, install the new rotor and bellows, reattach the shaft to the transmission, and reinstall the ground wire. Then you'll lock the rotor onto the shaft using set screws. It’s a fairly complicated DIY project, but if you have a day or two to spare it could be a worthwhile investment. Join BoatUS Associate editor Mark Corke as he walks you through all the steps from start to finish. 🚩Enjoy this video? When was the last time you replaced the anodes or zincs on your outboard or sterndrive motor? They should be replaced when around half gone, which is usually every year. Outboards and sterndrives usually come with several sacrificial anodes or zincs, which protect important metals, like the prop or outdrive, from galvanic corrosion. It's important that boat owners know where the boat anodes or zincs are located and how to replace them. While it's a critical part of maintenance, the process of replacing anodes and zincs is an easy DIY project. If you can turn a wrench, you can change your boat's anodes -- and save hundreds of dollars! Here's why you should regularly replace outboard anodes: Boats contain a lot of different metals, so when those are submerged in water, your boat essentially becomes one big battery! That energy created isn't enough to do anything useful, BUT one of those dissimilar metals will hold a negative charge in relation to, say, the stainless-steel prop. Like a household battery, the anodic metal will be destroyed in the process of generating electricity – aka galvanic corrosion. In a disposable battery, this is OK. On a boat, the used-up metal might be an expensive bronze propeller or an aluminum outdrive. In this video we'll show you where to find the outboard anodes on your boat's outboard or sterndrive and how to replace them. Check out the full article: http://www.boats.com/how-to/how-to-paint-a-boat/ Watch How to Prep a Boat for Painting: http://www.boats.com/how-to/maintenance/how-to-prep-a-boat-for-painting For more how to videos, visit www.boats.com. Welcome to our shop, and our 1938 Herreshoff Marlin. Today I'll show you an easy do it yourself way to paint your boat's topsides. Let's start by protecting the shearstrake and taping the edge. If the surface is dirty, take a tack rag and wipe it down so the tape will stick well. Let me show you a trick for taping. Tape the first 4-6 inches and make sure it's stuck well. Then get 4-6 feet away and you'll have a lot more control over how fair you can make the curve. You'll be very happy with the results. Once you've taped, go back and make sure the tape is stuck well. Once you have both the waterline and the shear taped, let's start preparing the surface. I'll be sanding the whole topsides with my six inch DA sander, using 320 grit paper. Take your time. You're just smoothing out the surface for the final paint, not fairing. Let the tool do the work, and change your paper often. Since I can't sand right up to the taped edge with the DA, I'll hand sand the final edge. Okay, the hull surface is sanded with 320 grit. I'll pull off the tape. This tape will have nicks in it and dust on it, so we don't want to use the same tape for painting. Before I apply new tape, I'll tack rag the whole topside. I've retaped the shear and the waterline. The surface is prepped and ready for paint. I'll be using foam brushes and a one part polyurethane paint. Make sure you read the manufacturer's instructions so you do all the proper preparation of the surface and thinning of the paint. I would not start painting too late in the day, just to prevent the moisture buildup that might happen overnight. Also do not paint in the full sun. It would be difficult to get the paint to flow properly. If you can paint undercover, I think you'll get better results. When you apply the paint take your time; don't try to cover too big an area at once. I apply the paint perpendicular to the shear, and then brush out in the direction of the shear; it seems to give me better results. With the painting complete, I'll pull the tape. Be careful not to have the tape fall on the painted topsides. There she is, looking nice. We just need to paint her bottom and she's ready for another summer of fun!

This shouldn't be a surprise, since outboards have been growing in popularity for many years now. So we decided to ask Chris Breeden, the service manager at Norfolk Marine and a Yamaha Master Tech, which outboard problem he saw with the most regularity. Chris's first answer came without hesitation: fuel systems. Thanks to modern ethanol issues, fuel systems can be finickier than ever. According to Chris, the first step in maintaining your fuel system is the use of a 10 micron fuel filter/water separator. Secondly, he notes that adding a fuel stabilizer to the tank each and every time you fill up is a must. And particularly on smaller, carbureted motors, the fuel system should be drained down every time the boat will sit unused for more than a few days at a time. The first step in this process is to start the engine, and disconnect the fuel line. Then let the engine idle until it runs out of fuel. Next, place a rag under the carburetor and open up the carb drain screw. Once all the remaining fuel has drained away, the engine can sit for several months without any issues. Making sure the fuel in your tank stays good is, of course, a separate issue (for more information on long-term fuel storage, read Ethanol Winterizing Tips). The next most common problem Chris sees is damage due to saltwater use without freshwater flushing. Corrosion and salt build up, anodes melt away, scaling clogs passages and gets into places it doesn't belong, and then you're left with major damage and a major repair bill. In fact, Chris showed us the inside of an outboard that hadn't been flushed regularly and it was a mess—to the tune of thousands of dollars in repair bills.

Welcome to our shop and Matsya, our 1938 Herreshoff Marlin. Today I'll show you how to prep the trouble spots on her topsides that are bare paint and peeling paint. First I like to inspect the whole hull looking for the trouble spots. I mark the trouble spots with a piece of tape. That way they're easy to find when I go back to take care of them. Once I've found the trouble spots, I like to go with a flat putty knife and remove all the peeling paint. Only remove what is not adhered well to the hull. Now that we've scraped off the loose paint we need to sand and feather in the edges. Some of the areas will be deeper than we can feather in; we'll have to do a fill. But before we do that, we want to sand and feather the edges, and then put primer over the bare spots. With the edges faired in, the bare spots smooth, and the few deep spots we'll have to fill, we can tack rag and prepare the surface for primer. Let's apply the primer. You don't have to go thick; just do a nice job covering the surface. Our primer has dried. It's time to fill the low spots. I've mixed up a little bit of epoxy with a sanding filler, and I'm applying that. And then with a nice putty knife, smooth it out. Don't overwork it; let it cure. Our filler has cured. Now we lightly sand the edges. It won't take much. Tack rag the surface once again, and apply the final coat of primer over the filled surfaces. Let the primer dry, and her topsides are ready for prep and painting.
