Left the boat in Lombok… and traded sails for surf, rice fields, and a bit of Bali chaos. After hopping aboard a ferry that felt more “adventure” than “transportation,” we made it to Bali in one slightly rattled piece. What followed was a weekend full of surprises: We wandered through the stunning Ubud rice terraces — yes, it’s crowded, yes, there are lines for photos… but the natural beauty still shines through and makes it all worth it. Tried Kopi Luwak, the famously expensive coffee made from civet poop — surprisingly smooth, if you don’t think about the process too much. Sampled a full flight of local teas — a mixed bag for the taste buds, but some were genuinely delicious (and the views didn’t hurt). Highlight of the trip? Surfing at Kuta Beach. Between the wipeouts and accidental nose-dives, it turned out to be the most fun we had all weekend. If you’re a sailor leaving your boat in Lombok and wondering what Bali’s got beyond the beach bars — this is your sign to explore inland. Just maybe bring ... an open mind. In this episode we’re recruiting a very talented friend to help us install our new bowsprit on the crossbeam. The process included welding strips to secure the trampolines in place and welding the holding rings in place. It was a brutally hot day, but in the end, worth every sweaty minute. ☝More about us, our adventures, and how we do all this on our website. Living on a boat is an emotional rollercoaster. Why is it every time we haul out things don't go as planned... www.sailingnandji.com We have had an amazing last 15 months, sailing over 10,000 nautical miles, crossing the vast Indian Ocean, exploring some seriously remote places, traversing the Mozambique Channel and flying down the wild coast of south Africa. Through every storm and every swell, our beloved Tayana, Nandji 2, has been our steadfast and sturdy home. But life on a boat comes with one constant: maintenance. So we’ve hauled her out here in the breathtaking town of Knysna to tackle some much-needed out-of-water projects and get her ready for our next big challenge: sailing around the most southern tip of Africa, the infamous Cape of Storms and then into the mighty Atlantic Ocean. We chose to do the haul-out here with our good mate Dave, partly to delay our farewell of this incredible place. Knysna has truly captured our hearts, and saying goodbye won’t be easy. But the sea is calling, and before we set sail once again… it’s time to get to work. Here's why it is super important to make your bed on your boat. It sets the tone for the day. A well made boat bed sets your mind right at ease that the boat is in good order - ready to sail at top speed and performance. If your bed is made, your boat is likely well maintained as well. In this episode, we wrap up a few long-overdue boat projects while waiting to sail into the Maddalena National Park. First up is finally mounting our Gen3 Starlink dish—a job that’s been on hold since we bought it almost a year ago in Greece. After sitting on the coachroof all this time, it’s time to give it a proper home on our solar arch. That means cutting the cable, feeding it through the arch and conduits, and joining it back together—fingers crossed it still works! Meanwhile, Jude brings out her trusty sewing machine to tackle a few smaller jobs, including a Velcro retaining strap for our swim platform ladder. Just another week of life aboard Helios, making sure everything is ready for the adventures ahead. ROYPOW supports the Elcano World Challenge #ROYPOW Check out ROYPOW here : https://www.roypow.com/marine-ess/ Contact ROYPOW here : marine@roypow.com I cannot believe how easy it is to install this ROYPOW battery system. Literally in about 2 hours you could have the whole system wired up to your electric motors, your solar panels, your air conditioning system and have it all operating under the control of the touch screen supplied by ROYPOW or controlled by your phone with bluetooth. I know of no other system that is so easy to install. You should also check out Episode 52 (https://youtu.be/6VMLGNG4DHs) where I introduce ROYPOW. Now it is not just me that thinks ROYPOW is great. Will Prowse, YouTube’s favourite Battery and Solar guy with 1 Million followers also loves ROYPOW. Check out for yourself what he has to say about ROYPOW. A broken heart and a brand new bowsprit made a great excuse for a boys trip to Peñasco for some good ol' fashion boatyard healing. Our dear friend Peter from SV Kessel (@KesselUnderway ) had a new aluminum bowsprit built and stuffed in his sprinter van along with boat parts, a massive amount of tools, a bench grinder, a giant sander, a drill press, a band saw, plywood, 3 gallons of epoxy, our new fridge, all of our engine spares and just enough room for Chris. With our return to Avocet scheduled a few months later in January, it was a great opportunity to knock some of our own projects out. Plus, I had a sneaking suspicion that some quality “bro” time would do wonders for Chris, despite his initial protests. As usual, the wife was right but we will get to that later. You can still contribute to the fight against cancer at https://profile.pmc.org/bf0201 This week, we map out our passage from Shelburne to Lunenburg, NS, making sure to follow a route safely offshore enough to avoid the many shoals and exposed rocks on the south coast of Nova Scotia. After a quick read through the Nova Scotia cruising guidebook, Steve and Robin set sail around 7pm for an overnight sail. Steve keeps a watch on the sails from his bunk while Robin is on watch. It’s slow sailing, but that makes for a very comfortable sleep. The red lights we installed in the galley make operating at night a lot easier on the eyes. Having the new light wind sail—which we’ve been calling a “Code 0”—was a godsend on this passage. With winds only around 8-10 kts. (for the most part), we were able to move at a decent pace. We arrived in Lunenburg just in time to see the Bluenose II sailing through the harbor in all its glory! The Bluenose was a famous schooner for fishing and racing, but was ultimately sold and wrecked when it ran aground off the coast of Haiti in 1946. The Bluenose II, built in 1963, is a replica of the original Bluenose schooner. She has sailed the world, but mostly runs charters out of Lunenburg harbor. It was our honor to be invited out for a sail on Bluenose II. We were blown away by the magnitude of everything on board. Everything was so much bigger and grander—including the size of their crew! We strongly encourage anyone with the opportunity to sail on one of these old schooners to get out there and sail. A few other highlights from our time in Lunenburg included a long hike over to Mahone Bay, where we stumbled upon a network of Faerie Trails, as well as a visit to the local hotspot, the Knot. At this point, Robin had to head back to Massachusetts to shuttle her truck back up to Nova Scotia, and I decided to head out on my first single-handing adventure. The weather was favorable with 10-15 kt. winds off the land. A run from Lunenburg to Cub Basin felt like a palatable and low-risk first solo sail. And it was! After a few sail plan changes, I found the perfect balance for Arabella, and we had an uneventful run from Lunenburg to Cub Basin. After we safely dropped the anchor, Akiva and I enjoyed the peace and serenity of Cub Basin…and I dipped into the Nova Scotia rock climbing guidebook and set out to check out the routes on the rocky islands all around us. Now, I just have to wait (impatiently) for Robin to return with our climbing gear! -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! Episode Summary: Welcome to another episode of Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of the United States! In this episode, host Bela Musits sits down with Charlie Kirchofer. This is Charlie’s second time on the podcast. In EP-133 we discussed his recent purchase of a 2022 Beneteau Oceanis 38.1. In this episode we discuss hiring a captain to help Charlie and his partner move the boat from Annapolis to Boston. Charlie has no offshore experience and we are reluctant to do such a long trip without experienced assistance onboard. We took a deep dive on hiring a captain and here are some tips: Ask Around: Word of mouth or referrals from local marinas or sailing friends can be your best source. Have a Conversation: Get on the phone with the captain beforehand to make sure your sailing styles and goals align. Set Expectations: Clarify responsibilities—will you be hands-on or just observing? Are you looking to learn or just get the boat moved? Be Prepared: Make sure your boat is ready—fuel, systems checked, provisions in place. The captain isn’t there to do maintenance. We sailed across the Indonesian waters, chasing the horizon until after a few days of navigating and passing scattered islands, we dropped anchor near a remote island that looked untouched by time. We reached a quiet little island that felt like something out of a dream. There, we hiked up to a stunning waterfall tucked deep in the jungle—completely surrounded by the sounds of nature and not much else. It was peaceful in a way that’s hard to put into words, and we really soaked in the simplicity of it all. After that, we continued our journey on to Lombok, where we spent a day at a wildlife park. It was kind of like a zoo, but not quite—what surprised us most was how close we could get to the animals. Many of them were just roaming around, and we were actually encouraged to feed and gently stroke them. It felt more like being a guest in their space than just a visitor. Of course, the crocodiles were wisely kept separate… no one was stroking those! Go To PATREON ...and .... Exploring these boats, talking to the people involved, and diving into this world filled us with inspiration to keep going with our own sailboat project. Every visit like this brings us closer to our dream and makes us count the days until our boat is finally ready! 🌍 Join us on this visit and get inspired too! 👨‍👩‍👦 We’re Duca & Roberta (and now also our baby boy, Oli), a Brazilian couple who swapped routine for adventure back in 2016 and never looked back. What began as a one-year sabbatical turned into Odd Life Crafting—a long-form documentary project told in seasons, each one a new DIY challenge and a step toward living the life we dreamed of. Here’s our journey so far: Season 1 – The Awakening While traveling and reflecting on what we truly wanted from life, we created this channel to share our path toward a more intentional, creative, and unconventional lifestyle. Season 2 – Learning by Doing With no prior experience (and a tiny budget), we built a fully off-grid container house to gain the skills we’d need to one day build our own boat. Season 3 – The Rebuild We found a sailboat that had been neglected for over 22 years and spent two full years restoring her, learning everything we could in the process. Season 4 – The Voyage We lived aboard and sailed for two incredible years, exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean, documenting every step of the journey. Season 5 – A New Build, A New Life Now in Europe, we’ve begun building a 43ft aluminum expedition sailboat from scratch—this time while raising the newest (and tiniest) member of our crew, our baby boy. The stakes are higher, but so is our motivation. On this channel, you’ll find episodes full of hands-on boatbuilding, real-life challenges, budget breakdowns, and the raw reality of building a dream from the ground up—now as a family. If you love big dreams, honest storytelling, and DIY with purpose—welcome aboard. Subscribe and follow along as we keep crafting this odd and beautiful life, one season at a time. #boat #boatbuilding #sailboat

Practical Sailor Article on replacing moldy fabric with wood strips: https://www.practical-sailor.com/boat-maintenance/diy-projects/how-to-replace-moldy-fabric-with-wood-strips I was recently chatting with a friend who is buying a 1990’s Beneteau that he wished came with a Yanmar, but actually has a Perkins and he was worried that it might be a downside to this particular boat. We recently did an episode on the history of Yanmar in sailboats because they’re so popular and every sailor seems to want one, but what about Perkins? Are they just as reliable with a parts network just as good? Are they easy to fix for the DIY sailor? Let’s find out! This week, everything you need to know about your sailboats Perkins diesel engine! My life aboard was a mix of adventure and reflection, shaping an independent woman’s story of resilience, personal growth, and embracing the sailing lifestyle. Along the way, I became an ocean conservation activist with In Mocean, stumbled across my dog Boga, and discovered the joys and challenges of sailing with a dog.
