Crossing the Strait of Gibraltar by sailboat is a milestone for many sailors—and now, it is our turn. After sailing from Al Hoceima to Ceuta putting us right at the entrance of the Straight, we chose a narrow weather window and motored across one of the world’s most infamous stretches of water. With orca sailboat attacks just a couple of days old and the unpredictable strong currents in the Straight of Gibraltar, we stayed alert and hoped we’d made the right call. This sailboat crossing of the Gibraltar Strait took us from Spanish Ceuta to Tangier, Morocco—our gateway into the Atlantic and into a new cultural experience. We share how we timed our departure with the shifting currents, why we opted for no wind, and what it felt like to be sailing from Ceuta to Tangier with the knowledge of recent orca sailboat attacks in the area. Arriving in Tangier by sailboat was smooth and filled with vibrant impressions. From our first steps into the medina to our quiet reflections after making the jump, this episode captures what it's like to experience Morocco by sailboat. If you're planning a Strait of Gibraltar sailboat journey—or just curious about sailing Morocco—this one’s for you. Facing the challenges of solo sailing as a female sailor, I navigated the highs and lows of single-handed sailing while tackling DIY boat repair projects, from engine fixes to full boat refits on a budget. My life aboard was a mix of adventure and reflection, shaping an independent woman’s story of resilience, personal growth, and embracing the sailing lifestyle. Along the way, I became an ocean conservation activist with In Mocean, stumbled across my dog Boga, and discovered the joys and challenges of sailing with a dog. Now, I’m exploring a new chapter, having jumped aboard my partner’s Hallberg Rassy Rasmus with Boga and his Australian Kelpie, Jango. Together, we face the unique dynamics and challenges of sailing as a couple, balancing off-grid life, sustainable sailing, and the demands of long-term cruising. This week, we’re getting ready for a 600-mile offshore passage from Miami, FL to Beaufort, NC. Before we set sail, I took the chance to get some boat work done: scrubbing and oiling the decks, smoothing out the battens so they don’t get stuck in the lazy jacks when we hoist sail, configuring a system to keep our Dyneema lines from slipping on our booms, installing tie-downs for our portholes, and adding an easy access point to our lazarette. High on the priority list is tightening up our rig before setting sail for a 600-mile offshore passage from Miami, FL to Beaufort, NC. To do this, I dig into my rock climbing gear for a Petzl Gri-Gri and a few slings, and rig an efficient system that gets the job done. Robin had to head back to Massachusetts for some family commitments, so I pulled together a crew of two guys to join me on the offshore passage: Jesse, a liveaboard we met in Key Biscayne, and my old college friend, Dave. Once in the Gulf Stream, Arabella settled into a cruising speed of around 8 knots, dipping the toe rails regularly as she plowed through 4-6’ seas. The only technical glitch along the passage was a broken connection to the rudder feedback sensor, which I was able to fix almost immediately. When the seas settled down a bit, Dave put out a trolling line with the hopes of catching a Mahi Mahi…and the mission was successful, until we lost the fish at the boat. Bummer! Should have used the gaff… Join us for the rest of the offshore passage next week, and don’t forget to like this video and subscribe to our channel to see more. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. After a closer inspection, we discovered the reason we were so low on water: most of our fresh drinking supply had leaked into the bilge. Ryan rushed to repair the tank, knowing how scarce fresh water can be in these islands. We nearly sank the kayak trekking through mangroves, scrambling up steep inclines, and navigating winding tracks multiple times, hauling our new water supply back to the boat by hand. All of this, only to wake the next morning sore and exhausted — and find the hull full of the very water we’d spent the entire day collecting. 00:00 - Disaster Strikes: Our Portside Water Tank Burst 💥🚰 0:43 - Intro video 🎬 1:16 - Emergency Repair: Fixing the Burst Tank 🔧🛠️ 2:21 - Uh-oh…Another Leak in the Boat?! 😱🚤 3:04 - DIY Fibreglass Boat Repair Hack 🛠️🛶 5:13 - Into the Bush: Mission to Find Fresh Water 🌿🚶‍♂️💧 9:31 - We Nearly Sunk the Kayak Carrying Our Water Supply 😨🚣‍♂️ 9:52 - Morning Shock: Starboard Hull Completely Flooded 🌊😳 11:13 - Total Water System Failure — Both Tanks Are Broken 💧❌🚱 🎥 Episode 10 – Sailing the Louisiades, Papua New Guinea 📍Location: Sudest Island, Louisiade Archipelago, Papua New Guinea ☕ Support Our Journey ☞ https://buymeacoffee.com/onceuponareef Or 🎁 Send us a gift ☞ https://throne.com/onceuponareef 🌍 Follow us: 📸 INSTAGRAM: @onceuponareef & @wheres.poppy 💡 PATREON ☞ https://www.patreon.com/c/onceuponareef 🎥 Poppy's YouTube Channel ☞ https://www.youtube.com/wherespoppy 📧 BUSINESS INQUIRIES - onceuponareef@protonmail.com Hey there, we’re Ryan and Poppy, a couple of adventure junkie sailors out to explore the most amazing reefs and islands in the world. Sailing my 2010 Precision 18 sailboat upwind on a high-altitude Rocky Mountain lake under a double-reefed mainsail only in heavy winds. My preference when sailing upwind in heavy air is to keep the centerboard fully down to minimize leeway, but the north end of the lake is shallow and has a lot of Eurasian Millfoil which will foul the centerboard, rudder and propeller...so I sailed with the centerboard fully up. Luckily for me, the Jim Taylor designed line of Precision boats all have a reputation for sailing really well on mainsail only. Some other brands of sailboats struggle making progress to windward on mainsail only, but the Precision boats point very well with just the main. Subscribe and follow @ColoradoSailing on YouTube for more original sailing videos, gear, boat maintenance, sailing tips and travel content as I sail my Precision 18 trailer sailer and Precision 16 sailing dinghy in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and South Dakota. #sailingchannel #coloradosailing #extremesports #sailing #mainsailonly

We finally launched our sailboat Lady Four! Something we’ve been working towards for months. But just as we were ready to head to the dock, our engine wouldn’t start. 😰 In this episode, we try everything we can to get it running again while wondering: what will happen to our Mediterranean sailing dream? 🫣 Aside from the trouble, we also take a few steps forward as we step the mast and continue preparing Lady Four to become seaworthy for our very first sail, which we hope will be soon! ⛵️ We also get a nice visit from the one and only previous owner of Lady Four. He had the boat for 44 years and is the one who, back in 2001, rebuilt her from a 31-footer into a 33-foot cruiser, complete with several upgrades and personal touches. It was so fun to show him what we’ve done with Lady Four, and he seemed to be very pleased! ☺️ 0:00 – INTRO - SPLASH DAY ANTICLIMAX 1:13 – SMALLER BOAT UPDATES 5:25 – MECHANIC’S ENGINE VERDICT 10:10 – SEALING & CLEANING FOR AN IMPORTANT VISIT 13:16 – MEETING LADY FOUR’S OLD CAPTAIN 14:35 – MASTING THE BOAT 18:34 – DIRTY JOB: CLEANING THE DIESEL TANK 🔔 Subscribe and follow along as we learn and explore life on a sailboat! 👉 Want to see all our sailboat prep videos? We are Eric, Kimberley, and Distin. We are from Alaska. We started our adventures in Alaska on our Nordhavn 55. We sold her and are now beginning our adventures on a new to us Nordhavn 50. Havaseas is getting pampered! We hauled her out at the Atlantic Yacht Basin for a well-deserved spa day. On the list: engine maintenance, keel cooler replacement, new stabilizer and bow thruster seals, cleaning and painting the running gear, a shiny hull wax, emergency ladder installation, and more! The crew at the Atlantic Yacht Basin did an incredible job! With all systems checked and upgrades complete, we’re almost ready to kick off for a summer, cruising season. If you’re dreaming of living on board a Nordhavn or buying a Nordhavn for bluewater cruising, this video offers a firsthand look at the challenges and rewards of long-term boat life. We’ll take you behind the scenes to see how we manage real-life boating situations—from maintenance issues to steering failures—and offer tips for anyone planning to live aboard or buy a Nordhavn. These are our adventures on our Nordhavn. How we live and where we go. Thanks for following along with our adventures! We have had Lizard Island on our bucket list for a while but living on a boat means there are always reasons why you can't make it. However, we did finally get there and the sailing was superb. Once on the island we decided to follow in Captain Cooks footsteps and hike to the look out point at the top . We did it for the exercise but they would have done it to figure out how to navigate and get out of the reef system. As we sail along we realise how tricky it is navigating in these waters. Reefs pop out from nowhere so you have to keep a good lookout at all times. We sail to the most Northern point in Australia and arrive in Hook Island and then the next day cross to Thursday Island where we check out of Australia. Unless you are a composites engineer yourself then this episode is not one we recommend you try at home. This week we are widening the doorway through the bulkhead - but this bulkhead has a carbon fibre chainplate built into it and we are going to cut super close. Why? We want to open up the space to make Paikea's narrow hulls more accessible and easier to walk through, but it is more than just taking the jigsaw to it. This area sees some serious load and by cutting into this space we need to know what we are doing. There is always a great deal of thought and calculations that go into each of our projects. Shayne makes it look easy but he has done this stuff a million times before (gotta admit it still makes me nervous looking how close we go to the chainplate!). As you may have already figured, we are not the average DIY boatbuilder on YouTube. Hopefully our videos will inspire others but we absolutely recommend talking to a composites engineer before you tackle anything as serious as what we are up to here. That being said, the end product looks fabulous and the bulkhead now has unidirectional fibre running along the entire doorway with edge capping to finish it off. Happy days. If you are interested to see the lamination of the doorframe in more detail an explanation of our methodology can be seen on our videos on re -engineering the doorframe - see the links below https://youtu.be/YoHUB7iZU4g https://youtu.be/Pvfkim9rvIY We tried filming some of this with our new insta360 but some footage came out a bit wonky so apologies everyone. We're learning as we are doing on the filming side of things. For the bulkhead edge capping we used vinlyester resin from Easy Composites @easycompositestv More info as always on our website https://youngbarnacles.com MUSIC https://www.youtube.com/

Practical Sailor: Bottom Paint Care - https://www.practical-sailor.com/boat-maintenance/bottom-paint-care Are you decided which bottom paint to use on your sailboat? Wondering how to clean your sailboat bottom paint? Modern anti-fouling paints promise a hull free of marine growth for one to several seasons. But in nutrient-rich water and as the paint becomes expended, barnacles and green stuff take hold, slowing us down, increasing fuel consumption under power and degrading handling. For all of the money spent on special props and new sails, and attention paid to perfect sail trim, no single factor is more important than a clean bottom. To combat this, racers use hard, scrubbable paints and scrub the bottom every two weeks. If a cruiser with soft paint followed that rhythm, his paint would be dispersed far and wide within a few months. For these and other reasons, different methods are required. Finally, even going slow and wasting fuel means nothing to you, clogged through hulls can cripple vital systems and vibration from a fouled prop can damage the powertrain. Sooner or later, the bottom will need to be cleaned, either by haul-out, or by in-water scrubbing. Practical Sailor is your trusted resource for reviews of sailboats and sailing gear. https://www.practical-sailor.com Chat with us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/PracticalSailor/

Pleiades’ is a beautifully maintained Bertram 50. Very much the benchmark for large flybridge cruisers for a generation of yachtsmen. This boat shows a great history with good owners and exceptional maintenance and care.

We sailed to Africa… kind of. After a 300-nautical-mile passage from Ibiza, we made landfall in Melilla—a Spanish enclave on the African continent. From border quirks to cultural shifts, this episode dives into the layered experience of sailing between two very different worlds. We walk you through our journey from Melilla to El Hoceima, Morocco—including the dog clearance process, what it’s like to bring a drone into Morocco, and the excitement of experiencing a new culture, cuisine, and coastline by sailboat. If you're dreaming of sailing to Africa, planning your own clearance into Morocco, or just curious what life is like on a liveaboard sailboat navigating between cultures—this one’s for you. This week, we start with a visit from the one and only Sam Holmes—a real, actual sailor! Sam regales us with tales of suffering and single handing his sailboat, and gives us some advice for the passages in our future. If you’re not already following him, make sure to check him out out at @Sam Holmes Sailing. The real meat and potatoes of the episode, though, will be calibrating the autopilot, getting our navigation electronics working correctly again, and rewiring our ePropulsion electric dinghy motor to get rid of the connector that keeps leaving us stranded. Calibrating the autopilot was a piece of cake. Rewiring the electric engine? Not so much. But more on that later… I had a crazy idea while a few of Robin’s friends were in town: I wanted to drop the anchor while under sail for the first time. I de-powered the boat by dropping a few of the bigger sails, leaving us to sail in under just the jib. Robin dropped the anchor just right, and loaded up the tender to test out the new battery connections…which, sadly, only worked for that one ride. Turns out the best way to repair the connection on an ePropulsion motor is to buy a gas outboard ;-) Our old friend George arrives with a brand new, reliable, but loud and smelly Honda. Dinghy motor issued, solved. And just in time to host another group of Robin’s friends. Together, we explored Boca Chita Key, and Elliot Key…some of the cleanest, clearest waters we’ve seen since the Dry Tortugas! Back to the ePropulsion electric motor…after trying to figure out what went wrong, Steve realizes that the data wires are too short for the connectors. We’re not giving up on the eProp, but getting the electric motor back online is going to require more time than we have at the moment, so we’re going to put a pin in that (pun intended). Thank you to everyone who sent ideas and advice for our ePropsulsion electric motor repairs, and the autopilot installation. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. We finally did it! Our first scuba dive off our Leopard 45 sailing catamaran achieved here in Saint Martin! The Milwaukee stick pump: https://amzn.to/4iNrN2g Trinidad Pro Performance Review Video: https://youtu.be/0qzm7i7meW4 After setting up our Bauer Junior II compressor, filling our first tank and putting the dive gear together, we took the plunge under the boat. From spotting an eagle ray and barracuda to using our gear to clean the hull before sailing, it was the perfect entry into liveaboard scuba diving. Now we just need to decide where our next dive adventure will be! (Hopefully not an anchor retrieval 😅). This was a huge milestone in the adventure, and something we've worked towards for years. Welcome to another episode of Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of the United States! In this episode, hosts Bela Musits sits down with Charlie Kirchofer. He recently purchased a 2022 Beneteau Oceanis 38.1. We discussed his criteria for selecting the Oceanis 38.1. We also covered how he plans on getting the sailboat from its location in Annapolis MD and Charlies home port of Boston MA. We took a deep dive on hiring a captain and here are some tips: Ask Around: Word of mouth or referrals from local marinas or sailing friends can be your best source. Have a Conversation: Get on the phone with the captain beforehand to make sure your sailing styles and goals align. Set Expectations: Clarify responsibilities—will you be hands-on or just observing? Are you looking to learn or just get the boat moved? Be Prepared: Make sure your boat is ready—fuel, systems checked, provisions in place. The captain isn’t there to do maintenance. Watch and Learn: Use the opportunity to soak up knowledge. Experienced captains can show you how to manage conditions and make better decisions on the water. Connect With Us: If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe and leave a review—it helps us reach more sailing enthusiasts like you! Send us your comments and suggestions. sailingtheeast@gmail.com Happy Sailing! Bela and Mike

IN THIS VIDEO: ticking to our preference for short daytime hops, a five-hour sail from Saint Lucia brought us back to the lush shores of Martinique. First stop: Anse Dufour, a quiet anchorage known for calm waters and decent snorkeling. It was a brief visit, and after one night, we continued north to Saint Pierre. Once Martinique’s capital, Saint Pierre was destroyed in 1902 when Mount Pelée erupted. Walking its rebuilt streets was a powerful reminder of resilience. Life aboard continued: Ann skillfully patched a torn cushion, and Dennis knocked out small maintenance tasks as we headed toward Guadeloupe to meet family, then on to Sint Maarten for repairs before our Atlantic crossing. Technically, our CopperCoat hull coating is holding up well—it keeps marine growth at bay, helps us maintain speed, and can last up to ten years with proper care. This time, cleaning it was easy: just a scraper and green scrubbie. Not all news was good, though. We discovered damage to our port daggerboard, likely from a fishing trap near Ilet Pigeon. A frustrating find, but part of the reality of life at sea. ✅ A walk through the resilient town of Saint Pierre, Martinique ✅ Snorkeling with marine life in the calm, turquoise Anse Dufour ✅ A behind-the-scenes look at our boat damage and how we handled it ✅ Honest moments of problem-solving, reflection, and gratitude ✅ The ups and downs of real-world sailing life ✅ This isn’t just a travel vlog — it’s a raw, real, and beautiful slice of life at sea. 👇 Comment: What would YOU do if your daggerboard cracked mid-adventure? 🔔 Subscribe to follow the GTFOplan and experience freedom, exploration, and sailing resilience. CURRENT LOCATION: https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/SV-GTFO/ ABOUT OUR CATAMARAN: We love our new Balance 482 - it's a perfect size for a cruising couple to handle and is a great "balance" of performance and comfort. One of our favorite features is the excellent ventilation since we mostly live as "hookers" (aka at anchor) where the boat automatically turns into the wind so we stay cool and we don't need to battle mold. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for our dream boat, sold nearly everything we owned, and shipped the rest to Cape Town, South Africa. After a safari and time exploring Cape Town, we moved aboard and began our journey. We sailed to Saint Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Noronha (Brazil), then across the Atlantic to Martinique, Sint Maarten, the US and British Virgin Islands, and through the Bahamas, including Inagua, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, the Exumas, and Eleuthera. We eventually made landfall in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Both of us grew up as Army brats. Dennis (the Colonel) served 30 years in the US Army—his retirement pension helped us retire in our 50s. Ann (the ship's Captain) worked in test automation using Python and Java. We met on Match.com, where Ann’s profile read: “Do you want to sail the world with me?” Ann introduced Dennis to sailing, and he quickly embraced the GTFOplan of early retirement and global adventure. Years of saving, living on one income, and cutting back on everything made our dream—a Balance 482 catamaran—a reality.
