E70 Weekly Vlog of Life in a Nutshell sailing travels. Another very busy week, sorting and cleaning, yet again! Magnus attacks the battery locker and sorts out the myriad of redundant cables. We gingerly remove the sail covers to see what is underneath and check out the sails. All seems OK on the surface. Nutshell gets her bottom cleaned and we make final preparations for cutting the lines and heading off into the deep blue sea. Thank you so much for watching and sharing this adventure with us. Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Crafted from my experiences aboard Starry Horizons, it's designed to simplify vessel and maintenance management, making life on the water even more enjoyable. Explore https://MaintenanceROS.com and enjoy an exclusive 20% discount for the first 6 months using promo code 'outchasingstars'. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** The time had come to explore a new part of Tonga: the Ha'apai Group. It's about a 60 mile sail to get there and along the way we got to encounter those magnificiant reason we came back to Tonga: humpback whales! We got to experience several 'heat runs' which is where male humpbacks compete over a female in order to mate. It was absolutely amazing to get our drone up in the air and capture all the splashing, tail slapping and breaching! Of course, once we got down to Foa Island, we managed to have a pretty good time there as well. We did some exploration, some snorkeling and attended the Agricultural and Fisheries show where we got to see the King! And as Amy mentioned at the end of the video, we are on our way to Sydney and hoping to meet up with you! Please check out the details here: https://www.facebook.com/events/820105004781226/ Hope to see you there! We've always dreamed of owning a large sailboat and calling it our home... Is this going to be that boat? Is there too much work to be done? You tell us... because we still haven't decided. This boat we check out is an Irwin 52' - a very luxurious sailing yacht in it's heyday, and some still are kept in amazing condition. One of these boats in good shape typically sells for $200,000 to $300,000, so the question is... is it worth buying this gutted boat for $25,000? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Make sure you make an informed decision on your next boat with this tool: http://sailingsoulianis.com/shop/ltl-boat-buying-dashboard/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way. I make travel vlogs sharing my ups and downs, adventures on motorbikes, sailboats, and vans. Instagram: @Finding_Simon Snapchat: Finding_Simon Twitter: @FindingSimon Donations: paypal.me/ShelbyandSimon Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/FindingSimon Merchandise: http://simonstiles.com/finding-simon/ :::::::FAQ::::::: - How do you afford to travel constantly? A: I travel really cheap, free camping, cooking my own meals, being as efficient as possible. I make my income almost entirely on YouTube but it's really tight. Ad revenue, patreon, paypal donations, merchandise sales and affiliate links bring in about as much as a part time minimum wage job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough I go back to work, doing photography mostly, sometimes commercial video projects, but it takes me away from my travels and videos. - How much does it cost? I spend on average $2000 travelling, most of which is gas, some repairs, food, and on average less than $200 on any eating out, shopping or extra curricular expenditures. I make $200 a month from YouTube and $400 from Patreon. The rest I make from my work. - What camera do you use? Sony A7ii, DJI Mavic Pro, Rode Videomic with Deadcat, Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, DIY tripods and lights. - What is your bike? 1999 Yamaha Vstar XVS1100 with a Champion Escort sidecar. - What kind of boat is that? It's a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 - What're your plans? Fix it up, run nothing but green power, sail off into the sunset. - How do you find all these cool places? To gain access to my complete research you need to hit me up on Patreon, but here's a few sites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/ https://www.campendium.com/ http://www.atlasobscura.com/ https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - What do you do for Internet? I use coffeeshops and libraries to upload episodes a few at a time, I also use my wifi antenna (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5T9lNM8Mukk&t=2s) and a data package on my phone (10GB) - How do you live on the road with a dog? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with my dog anyways, especially if it's warm out in the middle of the day. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make some decisions, avoiding places that ban dogs, and spending more time out in nature instead of in the cities. - What happened to the girl? We decided to go separate ways (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPgxDIXxCjY&t=4s) - Are you rich or something? definitely not. I've spent some quality time homeless, I've struggled financially most of my life, and although I'm blessed with great friends and family as well as being able bodied white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to travel the world. You need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, time with family, and often your career but it is possible. - Why don't you have 10x more subscribers? My channel isn't that old, many of the bigger channels you can compare mine to started putting out videos a couple years before I began. I could always use your help sharing my videos, spreading the word, and connecting with cross promotional opportunities. Editing and travelling tend to take up all my time. - Where are you now? The top perk on my Patreon page is a live link of my location on google maps so you can get an active idea of where I am currently. If that's not an option for you there's also Instagram and Instagram stories that give you a much better idea of what I'm up to today.
E69 Weekly Vlog of Life in a Nutshell sailing travels. We were having withdrawals from the canals so we took on one of the largest canals in the world, the Panama Canal, with its giant locks. We shared the locks with a multi million dollar mega yacht and massive ships! It was an amazing experience and here we share it all with you. See how the process works from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. An awesome experience. Hi Everyone! This is our oil change video for a 2006 Porsche 997 Carrera 4S!. It is the “complete” process including Pulling the fuel pump fuse, pre-filling the filter cup, cutting open the filter element for inspection and also a bit about using Blackstone Laboratories for oil analysis. I'll post the results as soon as I get them from Blackstone. That makes for a lot of steps! It is pretty straight forward and should take less than an hour depending on the steps you preform. I believe this also applies to the 996, 997, and 987 1998 through 2008. Not sure of the 987.2 2009 cars. The 986 and 987 Boxster and Cayman are similar, just the engine is in a different spot 😉. *** UPDATE: I got a message from a very knowledgeable viewer who mentioned the oil level is best checked warm as the oil will expand and it reduces the risk of over-filling. In addition to that, it is best to shoot for one notch from the top and not the top mark on the E-Gauge. I also did some research and for the 997.1, the oil check system tries to take into account the temperature and will control when it will display the oil level. For the 997.2, the oil is checked hot. If you have a question or comment (or if I left anything out), please leave it below. Always consult your Owner’s Manual/Shop Manual to verify all steps and values. The following steps are optional: • Prefilling the oil filter housing half way with oil. • Blackstone Laboratories oil test. • Pulling the fuel pump fuse. The parts used are: • Oil Filter Kit (includes large rubber O-Ring): Hengst E14H D77 (99610722560) or MAHLE https://goo.gl/yJLkuD • Mobil 1 120760 Synthetic Motor Oil 0W-40, 5 Quart : https://goo.gl/GECf9i • Case drain plug washer: 900-123-106-30 18X24 (Al) You’ll need: • Filter Cover Socket: 000-721-920-40 • 8mm Hex • Torque Wrench • 10Qts of oil • Blackstone Analysis Kit Torque Values: • Case Drain Plug: 37 Ft-Lbs • Oil Filter Cover: 19 Ft-Lbs The oil I used (supplied by the owner) was Mobil1 0W-40, but use what is specified by your owners manual. Oil Test is Blackstone Laboratories (https://www.blackstone-labs.com) I have no affiliation with Blackstone and they did not pay for this kit or Heidi and Franny’s Garage and have no knowledge of this use prior to this video. We hit a Brown Booby fishing streak sailing in the Northern Sea of Cortez, which requires lots of booby rescues, creative deterrent methods and rehabilitation for these cute sea birds. We sail into our first port on mainland Mexico and anchor with the shrimp fleet at Kino, do some awesome sailing, and get our last taste of the islands for a while as we make our way down to Guaymas to haul out and begin some routine maintenance. Music by Josspoop(https://soundcloud.com/josspoop) Really appreciate the support, check out the Patreon for more access and perks: https://www.patreon.com/FindingSimon If Patreon isn't your thing, I also have a Paypal.me link: paypal.me/ShelbyandSimon I've also created an Amazon Wish List if you'd like to purchase specific items I'll need as the build continues: http://a.co/dx7F4dz I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel to world.

If you drive, you need a dash camera, they help when eyewitnesses either aren't there and protect you against fraud. In this video, Deep Winter Prep, I get the Exterior Bat Ready for Winter Liveaboard, It's Finally time to start preparing Sailing Vessel Balachandra for my first cold Canadian winter in the North Atlantic. In this episode I remove the sails, build a framework and apply shrink wrap. I even show you how to put up Christmas Lights! If you like my videos, please SUBSCRIBE to see more, and be sure to give this video a like, Thanks! In August of 2017 I sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is my YouTube sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and the occasional crewmembers(s) as we navigate the east coast of North America and beyond. I also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard in a cold climate. Sailing Balachandra is published weekly so please subscribe so you don't miss out on future videos! Proceeds from this video will go to the Coral Reef Alliance, but you can also support me directly (and specifically the production of these videos) by becoming a Patron: https://www.patreon.com/theadventuresoftarka Tarka is a 1973 Albin Vega 27 (8.2m) that I bought sight-unseen and without sailing experience on the island of St. Martin in April of 2017. I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific. I am sailing Tarka around the world to raise money and awareness for coral conservation by supporting the Coral Reef Alliance. You can learn more here: http://www.theadventuresoftarka.com/fundraiser or visit their website directly: http://www.coral.org If you make a donation to their website directly in Tarka's honor, please send me an e-mail copy of your receipt so I can keep track of Tarka's fundraising. ***** With Starry Horizons back on the mend, we set out to explore a place of the Vava'u Group of Tonga we had never been before: Kenutu Island. This is one of those absolutely picturesque South Pacific Islands. It's surrounded by a reef, uninhabited with a gorgeous beach, palm trees everywhere and even a hike up to the top for a view and a mystery. What's not to love??? We were hoping to explore more of Vava'u, but we saw a weather window opening up to head down to the Ha'apai Group so we made our way back into Neiafu to refuel, re-provision and then get moving. As Amy mentioned in the end, we (should be!) in Australia by the time this video goes live and we'd love to meet up with you! Be sure and check out our Facebook page for organized meetups. You'll also be able to keep track of where we are and if we're near you, say hi! https://www.facebook.com/outchasingstars http://www.outchasingstars.com Thanks for watching! E67 Weekly Vlog of Life in a Nutshell sailing travels. There is so much to do! We gradually work our way through the cupboards and sort stuff out, take masses of bin bags off the boat and dig deeper and deeper into hidden lockers on the yacht. It is never ending! We then get onto the task of provisioning and finding local stockists for the various essential items that we need to make SV Nutshell compliant, safe and seaworthy. A trip out with a local fixer to the hidden stores and we return with gear. Yet, there is still more to source and more to do! Thank you so much for watching and sharing this adventure with us. Hi Everyone, The battery has been going dead in our 1995 Porsche 993 and in this video I go over a couple methods you can use to find electrical parasitic draws in your car’s electrical system. The first method is for older cars that you are fine with removing the negative battery cable and the second is great for newer cars where disruptions to power can cause big headaches. All you’ll need is a good Volt/Ohm/Amp multimeter and a little critical thinking. You’ll want to consult your owner’s manual to locate all the fuses and electrical components for your particular car. The first method involves removing the negative battery cable and splicing in an ammeter to directly read the parasitic current draw. By removing fuses we can directly see just who is causing all the fuss. The second method involves measuring the voltage drops across all the fuses. All fuses have some small resistance and if there is a current, we will see that effect in a voltage drop across the fuse terminals according to Ohm’s Law (V=I*R). I provide the resistance for the popular fuse sizes in the video so you can use I=V/R and calculate the approximate current, but if you would like to download a neat chart, I came across this site: http://info.powerprobe.com/fusechartsdownload Knowing your voltage across the fuse and its size, you can use the char to read the current flowing through the fuse. Pretty neat, huh? In this video, First BJ... or Sour Mother F***er? Home Port Tour, Hadley and I take you for a tour of our home port of Halifax, Nova Scotia Sailing Balachandra style - with beer! We check out some of the top local breweries and entertain you with our banter. If you like our videos, please SUBSCRIBE to see more, and be sure to give this video a like, Thanks! Hi Everyone, Today we replace the battery in our 2004 Porsche 996 Turbo X50. It was a fantastic opportunity to test out my new Solar BA5 Battery Tester. The battery that is in the car is several years old and is weeping acid. The Solar confirmed it was on its way out. For the battery change I use an OBDII memory saver which allows us to power the car’s un-switched power circuits during the battery swap so there is no memory loss in any of the computer modules. Super easy to use and saves lots of time! We've been crazy busy the last couple of months. Many unexpected trips and work have kept us from getting much progress done on Arabella. This video is from a trip we made to Rhode Island. We have to admit, it's not our best work but we'll be back in full force with the next one. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you're looking for a way to help us keep up on the videos, you should check out our Patreon page. E66 Weekly Vlog of Life in a Nutshell sailing travels. Our first night on Nutshell! There is so much cleaning and sorting to do but we get into it. We find many interesting and useful things on Nutshell. Magnus makes a start of the many jobs which need to be done and manages to tick things off the to do list. He attempts to start the engine, but it needs plenty of work. It’s a very busy time. We watch the ships pass close by on their way to the Panama Canal. It’s all a bit surreal. Thank you so much for watching and sharing this adventure with us. Music by Andrew Rothschild (https://soundcloud.com/aroths) Really appreciate the support, check out the Patreon for more access and perks: https://www.patreon.com/FindingSimon If Patreon isn't your thing, I also have a Paypal.me link: paypal.me/ShelbyandSimon I've also created an Amazon Wish List if you'd like to purchase specific items I'll need as the build continues: http://a.co/dx7F4dz I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel to world.
***** After a long awaited return to Starry Horizons in Tonga, we immediately started re-commissioning her and discovered a serious problem. The anodes on our saildrives had completely disappeared and the saildrives had started corroding! This was something that required immediate fixing and fortunately, the only boat yard in Tonga (conveniently called "The Boat Yard") had just opened up the previous year and could haul SH. We ended up on the hard for about a week fixing the saildrives and working on various other projects. When we got back in the water, we were ready to go cruise Tonga! We want to send another HUGE thank you to Kjell and Adriana for letting us stay at Mystic Sands (http://www.mysticsands.net/) while SH was on the hard. Life in a boatyard is much better when you're not living IN the boatyard! Thanks again guys! Be sure and subscribe to catch lots more videos coming up! This video shows you our DIY boat solar panel installation - without welding, pipe bending or using any expensive tools! 🔔 SUBSCRIBE ➜ http://bit.ly/SBYouTube⛵ See the parts you need to build this here: https://www.amazon.com/shop/sailingbritaly?listId=XSQU9JADY8HZ I made our solar 'arch' from tubular stainless steel. The solar panels can be quickly and easily tilted and rotated through 360 degrees to track the sun in order to generate more power when required. If you are considering increasing the power generation on board your boat, solar power is the way to go. Solar panels are silent, maintenance free (with no moving parts), relatively cheap and very long lasting, with many panels guaranteed for 25 years. If you are considering installing solar panels yourself then you should watch this video as it may give you some ideas. The 5 steps to install solar panels as outlined in this video are: 1. Decide where to fit the panels 2. Buy the largest panels possible (Based on your budget and the space available) 3. Buy a Charge controller (MPPT charge controllers are far superior to PWM charge controllers, and can be picked up at a reasonable price online) 4. Fit the solar panels 5. Run the cables and make the electrical connections In this video I show you how you can make your own 'solar arch' without spending thousands (or tens of thousands!) of dollars employing someone else to do this for you. Fit your own solar panels so you can live on the hook whilst cruising: you'll save yourself a fortune both in fitting the panels, and in marina fees afterwards! ⛵ Sailing Britaly ⛵ brings you the sailing shenanigans of Chris (British) and Rossella (Italian), as we sail our 30ft sloop. We make sailing vlogs of our cruising adventures and share any tips and tricks we can along the way. After all, sailors are one big family! We begin settling in to the cruising lifestyle. Bayona is a charming town with lots to do, so we get to it, taking a walking tour and also visiting the castle. This posting is more about the town and less about sailing. We'll alternate episodes between getting places, being in places, and maintenance tasks as there seems to be interests in all three.
