What do you do when you find a cobra in your workshop? Our rigger isn't phased about it... watch till the end! Subscribe for more sailing videos: https://ftbyoutube.page.link/subscribe We filmed most of this week's episode when Liz was away in the UK, so while Millie supervised from above, Jamie got on with lots of boat repairs and maintenance above and below decks, including a second fuel leak. We had a conversation with Jai, our rigger, about points to consider when making a rigging inspection. In the episode we show the first part of this conversation, but we think it was so interesting we have released the full interview on Patreon. It includes a discussion about using Dyneema for standing rigging. The stainless team, Wit and Lek, get to grips with various jobs around SY Esper. Wit shapes the new Torlon log bearing, and shows us the best way to take out that temporary cutlass bearing from the pea bracket we added back in Pangkor. Clue: it doesn't involve a big hammer! And we made the decision to buy new anchor chain. The old one would probably have been OK for a while longer, but with our big plans for sailing to Alaska ahead of us, we thought it was sensible to renew it now. Thanks for watching and for your fantastic support! We've had quite a few visitors here in Krabi Boat Lagoon, so if you're in the area, come and find us! SOLD! Congratulations and safe travels to the new owners. Lady Di is the ground-breaking hull number one that launched the Krogen 39 phenomenon. She was delivered in 1998, wow, twenty years ago! You can’t judge a book by its’ cover and the same follows for Lady Di, (except her cover and all of the pages inside look much newer looking than her model year proclaims). Economical, efficient and practical, Lady Di is a very appealing choice for first time trawler owners or for sailors who are ready to make the trawler transition and are looking for the room and space more equivalent to accommodations found in a 45’ sailboat. Lady Di was purchased in 2017 by her third owner who attended to all of the survey recommendations and has had her systems and machinery all serviced for cruising. With the survey projects completed (including a new main engine shaft, bottom paint, propeller tuning, etc.) they have recently settled in to enjoy her – only to realize that the boat they bought may be ideal for two people; but when their grandkids come aboard they are short on sleeping accommodations. For this reason alone, they have decided to sell Lady Di and are already looking to purchase a similar quality trawler when they find one a bit larger and with a true second stateroom. Designed by Jim Krogen (senior) to be an offshore, ocean crossing livable trawler for two people, the Krogen 39 has exceeded that goal. She is both compact (for marina slips) and large (spacious interior volume including standing headroom in the front of the engine room) at the same time. Easy to dock with her refined hull shape including wine glass transom and fitted with a bow thruster this is a single engine trawler that is easy to handle. Her exterior; swim platform, covered cockpit, side decks, foredeck, boat deck and flybridge provides a variety of outdoor living space. From the beginning, the systems on Lady Di have been purposely minimal. She is a back-to-basics boat that includes the essentials favored by three owners now. Simple, understated, exceptional. The Krogen 39 is a very good secret that is still not as well-known as she should be. Lady Di has been looked after with regular and caring maintenance, she is as dependable as she is reliable. The Kadey-Krogen line is very popular and celebrated for their seakeeping abilities. The brand is famous for their gorgeous finish: glistening gelcoat, sparkling stainless and beautiful teak timber throughout. Lady Di is the equal in elegance to her larger siblings all hand built by Asia Harbor Yacht Builders in Taiwan. The Krogen 39 is no longer in production, the costs to build them became to high and so there are only about 50 hulls sailing the seven seas. Originally named “Number One”, she was the cover story and feature article in the Winter 1998/1999 PassageMaker magazine that announced her arrival and letting the world in on this ‘secret’. Bill Parlatore who wrote that piece had an interesting observation, “The Krogen 39 is a trawler designed for KISS passage making. Keep things simple. If you can resist becoming best friends with your local marine store when you outfit the boat, and instead go slowly during the outfitting process, you will be one happy couple with an exceedingly happy boat.” A true full displacement, long range trawler, she is an ideal cruising platform for an adventurous couple. During her career, Lady Di has covered the US west coast down south to Mexico and up north to Alaska. She has been on the San Francisco Bay for the past few years and now resides in Vallejo, CA home of the California Maritime Academy. Provisioned and topped off with fuel she is a few short miles away from clearing the Golden Gate with a virtually unlimited itinerary of blue water to explore. The Krogen 39 lives up to the Kadey-Krogen marketing slogan, “At Home On Any Sea”. #JMYS, #KadeyKrogen39, #TalkThroughTour, #Trawlers Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jeffmerrillyachtsales/?fref=nf Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/merrillyachts Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jmystrawlers/ Offered by Jeff Merrill Yacht Sales, Inc. Building a sailboat arch for solar panels, dinghy davits, fenders and workout The best way to mount solar panels on a sailboat is to make a sailboat solar arch on the back. This arch also works as dinghy davits and is very practical. As many has pointed out in past videos the way I was tugging my dinghy was not optimal to say the least. Hoisting it up on deck is a bitch everytime you sail and I also needed more room to put solar panels and toys like my electric scooters. The building of an arch became more and more obvious, but it was very expensive. A simple arch to my boat was offered made for 3500 Euros, but then the constructor could not promise a given date for delivery. I would not be able to make changes to the design either, so I decided to build it myself with the help of some friends. I really could not have done this project without them. I needed help with the welding, measuring and planing. To this date there is no drawings for this DIY solar arch. It was made as we progressed and built on site. For me welding a solar arch in stainless steel was a challenge, and a friend helped me weld it together. The total cost of building sailboat davits and arch in stainless steel arch for this project was about 1000 Euros. I also bought equipment specially for this project at a cost og 600 Euros and another 600 Euros for a new drill and grinder that I would have bought anyways. All in all the arch did not get expensive at all, but there is a lot of hours spent, and still to be spent! Please note; this is not a DIY video intended for knowledge on building arch for sailboat. Please do give the video a thumbs up if you like it, comments are always welcome and don't forget to subscribe if you are new to my channel. How to make your diesel shoot sparks...and start. This week's bonus episode of sailboat living with SailAway is a "Maintenance Short" (see all maintenance stuff in the "Messing About On Boats" playlist) We let you in on our ongoing starter/batteries conundrum and Eric's rather unusual way of starting the sailboat diesel that's kept us cruising so far. When it works it works...especially if you're a hundred miles from nowhere (most recently in the middle of the Gulf Stream)! Eric narrows down the problem and takes you through it. A sailboat working is big part of sailboat living! Be sure to SUBSCRIBE for WEEKLY CONTENT! Cheers!! 18' RUNABOUT, BOWRIDER, 4.3L V6 MERCRUISER 190hp, ON THE TRAILER. GREAT BOAT FOR A DIY GUY WHO'S LOOKING FOR AN AFFORDABLE DEAL!
Check out the Inergy Kodiak (https://www.inergysolar.com/ref/25/) and use the code 'FindingSi' for 20% off. Wanted to give you guys an update on how the Kodiak has faired. Honestly I'm really impressed, I kill most electronics, especially something like this coming at a lower price point and offering really modern specs, I haven't had a good track record with tech like this. Its not the best possible solar solution, but its obvious that's a beginner solar setup in order to keep the price down and allow people to upgrade later on if they find it's needed. Inergy also offers a series of accessories not included in this review, so that's something to think about for your solar battery bank setup. Lastly I've been really admiring it's portability, it's the gas tank for my trolling motor, the cordless attachment to any corded tool I have, and a great way of keeping work moving forward. Thank you Inergy for the Kodiak, Captain Mike loves it, and the whole bay is better off for that quiet efficient power, so he can keep carving. I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects.

It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

The deadwood shaped in the last episode is capped with a wormshoe. The wormshoe is a protective sacrificial piece that can be replaced if it is ever damaged from running aground or any similar mishap. We have help from Michael, who drove all the way from Ohio to help us as well as Rhys, who flew in from Ireland! With the wormshoe finished we move on to milling the lumber we took down this past winter to finish out our supply to build Arabella. James from the J-Team (http://www.jteamsawmill.com) came with his beast of a mill and we banged the job out in 2 days! Give him a shout if you are looking for someone to mill your lumber. Finally, check out Rhys' channel as well. Rhys is fixing up a steel boat in Cork, Ireland and doing a bang up job. He is one hell of nice guy and a hard worker to boot. Sure you'll enjoy watching his channel as well. https://www.youtube.com/user/rhyswalters1 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com

Well, I have been putting it off but had to replace my drill, could not be happier with the Milwaukee drill we choose. It is very light, has all the power I need, and the battery life is awesome and just a beast with torque for the size. $10,000 to re-rig our boat?! The rigging's ten years old, so our insurers insist we change it. But what do the professional riggers think? Liz went up the main mast to help our rigger with measuring the triatic, a feat requiring a certain amount of acrobatics and skill. With the job complete, we sat down to discuss what to do next... Service or replace? In the meantime, work still continues on the dodger, with Lek and Wit's the stainless team adding supports for the GRP/honeycomb back struts. That diesel leak still needs attention, and Liz spends a glorious day cleaning out the tanks...again. And we open a bottle of Champagne! And Jamie lets us in on one of the less fun jobs he regularly undertakes... Thanks for watching and for your fantastic support! Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Crafted from my experiences aboard Starry Horizons, it's designed to simplify vessel and maintenance management, making life on the water even more enjoyable. Explore https://MaintenanceROS.com and enjoy an exclusive 20% discount for the first 6 months using promo code 'outchasingstars'. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** For the last year, we'd had one date circled on the calendar: New Year's Eve in Sydney Harbour. And we finally made it... David's family flew halfway around the world to join us for the holidays and we spent several weeks together exploring Australia. We got out to visit the (very foggy!) Blue Mountains, flew up to Brisbane to get up close and personal with some kangaroos and koalas, and finished the trip with a short sail up to Pittwater. But the highlight was definitely New Year's Eve. We anchored Starry Horizons in Farm Cove on the 30th, just a stones throw from the Opera House. The next day, chaos descended. It felt like every boat in Australia was trying to join us in the little cove. Boats were dragging anchor, running into each other and anchoring waaayyyy too close. Honestly, it was quite stressful. Somehow, we managed to make it through the day without incident. And the fireworks made it all worth it. Happy 2018 indeed! Thanks for watching! Finally! Although the deck is far from perfect, we're super proud of how it came out. The interlux brightside looks good, but the show stopper is the KiwiGrip. It was so easy to apply and it looks awesome, feels great, and seems like it'll grip bare feet or shoes extremely well. We can't wait to see how it holds up to the wear and tear or cruising life. A couple notes on the KiwiGrip: It did go on thick but it didn't cover as well as I'd hoped in a few areas so I think we'll do a second coat before we splash Freebie. Also, the white KiwiGrip looks good when clean but I can already tell it may be hard to keep it that way. We'll be swabbing the decks frequently! - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.
A few notes: 1. Going down is just the opposite as going up. 2. Never bring an ascender to the very top of a rope, as it needs a a few inches of space above it to dis-engage from the rope and move downward again. (I learned this the hard way and was stuck at the top of my mast for half an hour) Here are the exact items I use: Ascenders: https://amzn.to/2J7uYRr Harness: https://amzn.to/2u9G9o1 Foot straps: https://amzn.to/2L2J2x7 Caribeners: https://amzn.to/2N51BkW But, you can also employ the following, which I did before I bought any of the gear above (it just makes it easier): Prusik knot: https://www.animatedknots.com/prusik/ Hasty harness: https://www.animatedknots.com/harness/index.php Proceeds from this video will go to the Coral Reef Alliance, but you can also support me directly (and specifically the production of these videos) by becoming a Patron: https://www.patreon.com/theadventuresoftarka I am sailing Tarka around the world to raise money and awareness for coral conservation by supporting the Coral Reef Alliance. Following Simon Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/finding_simon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/findingsimon Website: http://simonstiles.com/ Asking Simon - Who are you?

Boats break, things go wrong, equipment stops working, thats the nature of the beast. The sea is a harsh environment and keeping up with repairs and maintenance can be a ball breaker! In this episode Im fixing stuff and eating a giant Pizza! #sailing #sailingblog Thank you for watching this episode, please give us a thumbs up and subscribe. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. As the haul-out travel lift came lumbering towards us, it was a lesson in hope, guts and teamwork. Subscribe for more sailing videos: https://ftbyoutube.page.link/subscribe The rain and wind howled round the yard, swinging our shiny dodger from the haul-out crane a little more than anyone liked, while Millie and Liz hid below listening to seven men shouting in two languages outside. After some detective work and a chat with Oyster, we discovered that the material used for our log bearing was Tufnol®. We've discovered it will be easier to source/replace using Torlon®, which we'll make to size here in the marina. The stainless team got to work on the davits, adding a frame for the new solar panel waiting for us in Pangkor. They are strengthening the original system in preparation for the foul conditions we are likely to encounter during the forthcoming easterly ocean crossing. ❤️ Fancy spreading some love? Happy Fourth of July! In this vlog we do a lot of prep work right up until we put the first couple layers of primer on our sailboat deck. With regards to the core in the questionable large area. It really did feel very dry, and when we compared the core from the questionable area to the mush that came out of the cockpit sole, that was our comparative analysis. At the time we felt this was enough and since we didn't have a moisture meter on hand we felt fine using our eyes and hands to determine the moisture level instead of relying on a device that may give us a number we don't know what to do with. After reading the comments on our last video, however, we decided to order a cheap moisture meter so we can get an idea of wetter areas of the deck and keep track of them as we cruise. We haven't gotten a chance to use it yet though. In a perfect world we would have had an unlimited amount of time in the shed for us to be able to re-core the whole deck, however that was simply not the case. We only had to the end of the month so we had to get moving. Since the core seemed dry everywhere except the cockpit sole, we decided to close up the inspection squares and paint. Going forward, we are planning on fixing the flex in the deck by glassing stringers on the underside from down below. This won't be hard as we're gutting the interior anyway. We're going to tie in the stringers into our design for the new headliner, and they will serve multiple purposes. The stringers will be a base for the headliner to be mounted to as well as adding structural integrity to the deck. If we find any really wet areas of the deck after we check the whole deck with the moisture meter, we will look into ways of fixing it from below so we don't mess up our new paint job on top. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. Okay guys we are cooking our tails off so we thought we'd set up some emergency redneck. We use the sprinkler system in the backyard for one side and a box fan with a mister attachment on a faucet.
