DIY Carpentry on a boat - Will it look good ? In this weeks episode we make repairs to our mainsail which was damaged in the stronger We are forced to look at repairing another of the bad "professionally" repaired locker lids as it has split, we decide it will be ultimately quicker and more economic to make a new one from the materials we still have on board #BlownAway The toilet pump is removed for service and we replace the pipework in readiness of many months at anchor with no shoreside facilities, likewise the water maker filters are replaced and the water maker is cleaned and serviced. Now we await better weather to continue our external repairs on the lockers and a few areas of paint that need taking back to bare metal, the windows need removal and the roof is coming off.... watch this space. Wanting to create external chainplates made from Dyneema? Ideal for Dyneema standing rigging. Simple, strong, cheap and easy to DIY. This is a variation of Dyneema chainplate that uses the Dyneema loops from our chainplate system in a different way. Could be a great option if you are working with an older GRP boat, switching to dyneema rigging and are concerned about your chainplates. In previous episodes we have shown the internal Dyneema chainplates we are building, we have now worked out how you might create an external version. These will avoid waterproofing issues and will be fantastic for distributing the rigging loads down the hull. We are changing all the standing rigging on our 1977 Rival 38 to Dyneema synthetic rigging. That includes all shrouds, stays and even the chainplates for both masts of our ketch rig. This is the 5th episode in our Dyneema series that will cover all the design choices, the practicalities of a completely DIY re-rig and then how it works out when we go sailing. Our goal is a rig that is: - stronger - lighter - cheaper - allows us to sail faster - lasts longer - can be DIY maintained even replaced, anywhere in the world We are refitting a 44 year old Rival 38 for a Sustainable Sailing retirement in a few years. Two years ago, when we bought Vida she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all electric (motor, cooking etc). When we visited Rotoroa Island, we saw the 'Flying is overrated' sign with the weka bird and we couldn't agree more. Although flying has given us the opportunity to travel to many destinations, since moving on board Tāiko, our world has really opened up. Tāiko has enabled us to see many of the pest free islands in New Zealand and has allowed us to stay off-grid in many beautiful anchorages. Places we would never have been able to see due to cost or time constraints. She has given us the freedom to explore and filled our lives with adventure. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. In the meantime, follow along with us as we navigate this new lifestyle whilst sharpening our skills exploring New Zealand waters.

The realities of Sailing, sometimes it not all sunsets, sailing Greek Islands, beers, beach fires, and sunbaking...especially not winter sailing when storms and unpredictable weather is about. We really try have a no BS approach to our video's and as much as we love to show you the beautiful places we visit and the adventures we have, sometimes it just isn't like that! sometimes it involves none of those things... sometimes our days are filled with boat maintenance, trying to maintain somewhat of a routine, trying to workout, eat healthy, editing video's and doing all of our daily errands. Once you have opened the door slightly the spring will push the door to the fully open position. There are many sizes, designs set at various pressures and made from a variety of materials so it's important to choose the right one for the job. On boats this invariably means choosing a 316 stainless steel one. Replacing a gas strut is one of the easier DIY sailboat maintenance jobs. But when you're travelling the world by sea one of the biggest challenges is sourcing parts. Even if you can find them online, getting them delivered to your location is a whole other challenge, especially something as specialised as a pair of stainless steel, 600mm, 400N gas heavy lift, gas spring struts! Luckily a few of our maintenance jobs coincided with a trip to the UK so we picked up a few spare parts on the fly. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the works needed were a lot more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Carolyn's drawing, printed in an enlarged version, serves as Steve's handy mapping tool for what will be the power system for the Arabella. Our two biggest power draws, as of now, will be the refrigerator, the watermaker, and any video-making equipment we have on board. We're testing out a complete, enclosed battery system for use on and off the boat. Steve (and all of us here, in fact) have relied on some kind of enclosed reliable power supply, some equipped with an inverter and some with attached solar panels, to have the adventures we've had on land and water. Since the get-go, Steve has been wondering if there's something out there that could take the place of a pieced-together system of batteries, inverter, solar controller, solar panels, etc. powerful enough to take care of, say, guests' phones, power tools at the bench, or even the entire house needs of Arabella. We started to test one that was made for off-grid self-reliance. We're going with conduit and bus bars in junction boxes for the tinned wire we'll be running throughout Arabella for the 12V electrical system, and Steve gets to demonstrating what he's gotten so far for equipment and what that will mean as far as the installation goes. Another great calm day entices us to return to the outer reef of Manjack Cay in the Abacos, Bahamas. The corals and caves are just spectacular there. But we eventually want to start seeing more of the Bahamas so we pull anchor under sail to do one last stop at Green turtle Cay. That's where we can stock up on fresh produce and water. When we first bought our sailboat, we didn't know anything about boat repair. Now, a few years and dozens of boat projects later, we've acquired quite a bit of experience. With similar projects popping up a second time we don’t feel so clueless anymore! We've had one minor deck leak that has dogged us ever since we first surveyed the boat. Kirk thinks he’s finally armed with enough experience and the right supplies — penetrating epoxy — to put an end to the leak. He also pieces together his own DIY fuel polishing system to clean our dirty fuel tank. After tying up these loose ends, it’s splash time. Yeehaw!
