#sailing life #sailing #curaçao #immigration #checking out How things can suddenly change when you live on boat and it is not just the weather. Sometimes our plans change at the last minute but I guess this is what makes it so unique...not knowing where you may end up and being able to change direction whenever it suits or whenever it is necessary. We decided at the last minute to go East rather then West, to explore Colombia and further along with a wonderful group of American sailing families whom we all clicked with . This also meant we had to fairly quickly work out how to check out of this country ...all in one day ! Music in this video deserves a Thanks to : " Goodbye To Spring" by Josh Woodward. SO CLOSE Yet So Far From SAILING AWAY | Harbors Unknown Ep. 57 When people think of the cruising lifestyle, visions of sailing through crystal clear water, dolphins playing at the bow, snorkeling beautiful reefs, and long walks on secluded beaches come to mind. What’s forgotten is the time spent on boat projects and maintenance. And that has been our world for the past couple months. We have been buried in boat projects, but we’re making progress and we are soo close to being able to sail back to the Bahamas, the start of our circumnavigation on our Seawind 1600 catamaran. This week we continue tackling projects like inspecting the mast, Gori folding propellers and figure out how to get our life raft into the storage locker under the boat. Join us as we get a little bit closer to GO time and plan our sea trial and weather window for departure. We're excited to announce we are launching the Harbors Unknown community on Patreon! Visit patreon.com/HarborsUnknown to join NOW! If you're new here, Harbors Unknown is the story of two dreamers, Kristin and Fabio Potenti, and our French Bulldog dog Yoda. We sold our home at the beginning of the pandemic (May 27th, 2020) and moved aboard our @Seawind Catamarans boat, Wanderlust, in September, 2020. We're sailing her to Harbors Unknown, to explore the world’s vast cultures through food, a common thread amongst people everywhere. Connecting with people and places through the local cuisine, and showing how those dishes can be cooked on a boat with limited space and resources. We're sharing our adventures as a sailing couple living on a boat and how it’s possible to live an alternative lifestyle that provides freedom and fulfillment. We have set off on our voyage sailing around the world, exploring the beautiful waters of South Florida, the Florida Keys, Bahamas, and the US East Coast. #boat life #Tavira #Dinghy repair #Portuguese food 00:00 Intro and summery of episode 01:25 Forte da Ponta da Bandeira 02:06 Bertil tries my kayak 02:58 New trip up to Foia and Tavira 06:22 Happy new year 07:03 We taste the national dish chicken piri piri 07:50 Fixing the dinghy 10:42 Benagil cave 13:18 We prepare to leave the boat to go back to Sweden 15:39 Next episode In this episode we enjoy our boat life in Lagos together with Bertil that mean we eat, relax, do some exceptions, fix a little bit on the boat and celebrate new year. Then we do a short trip to the cold north back home to Sweden to see family and friends but we quickly return to Frida. We are a middle aged couple that has left our hectic business lives to go sailing with our boat Fridá af Wisby and our cat Litza. Our goal is not to go to a specific place but to reach a state of mind where we can really enjoy life. We love to explore the area we are in, meat fellow sailors and locals but also to just relax on the boat. But living on a boat almost full-time means that we do need to do quite a bit of maintenance and we want to share all of this with you through our videos. Anders has been at the sea most of his life and sailed for the Swedish national dingy sailing team as a young man. Gitte has also grown up with boat and spent every summer sailing with her father as a teenager but made a pause of about 15 years without sailing as an adult, had just begun to pick-up the interest before she meet Anders a 4 years ago. Onboard we also have our cat Litza a 3 year old Devon Rex we call her the cattain because cats always decide over their humans. Litza is a Devon Rex cat and she is the real cattain aboard. Fridá af Wisby is a Wauquiez 47 pilot saloon that we Gitte and Anders bought in UK in 2019 and that we have sailed to Gotland and in season 1 2020 we sail in the Baltic Sea and in August 2020 we began our big adventure to sail along the Atlantic coast of Europe all the way to the Mediterranean Sea.

Boat life rescue in shark bay -Sailing Western Australia Ep 143 This week we survive a night rocking and rolling in an exposed anchorage then on our arrival in Denham, Rob and fellow yachtie Bradley just happened to be passing an old fishing vessel where they notice a trapped wild seabird, a cormorant, caught up in the netting on the boats bow. They jumped aboard and managed to free the poor bird. Unfortunately Rob got a slight wound for his troubles when the frightened bird lashed out with his pointed beak. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #TheCruisingKiwis

Learn more about our VERY LAST open house or about visiting Arabella here: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/visitor-welcome Now that we've got the various stainless tanks and heat shields here at the shop, it's time to start doing this and that around Arabella that we put aside as we waited for their arrival. The starboard side's "main lines" of electrical conduit and get run, and we've just got news this week that we'll be seeing an electrical panel here, one of a couple, in about a month. Supply shortages are putting a delay into the electrical, but luckily, orders are still moving. Joe "The Machinist", as he's known around here, came to work on a couple of different things, and the one we focus on here is for some custom hardware that will make it easy to beautifully mount the under-deck heat shielding that will go above the cook stove, wood stove, and diesel heater. It's always extremely satisfying to see skilled hands at the lathe. And finally, the big project we hit in this installment involves fitting out the head with a few things, mainly the pedestal for the sink, which will act as a bit of storage, but will mostly be for hiding the drain pipe. The sink will be perched onto a surface of oak that will go over the top of the water tank, and of course, there's a cut-out for the inspection port at the top of the water tank. The composting toilet gets some pads of locust that it will sit on after it's permanently installed onto the locust shower grate. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur boat builder building a 38' wooden boat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. You've watched us renovate this 1968 Airstream trailer for the past few weeks, with a mission to turn it into our mobile, modern, adventure headquarters. Join us this episode as we transform the space with new flooring & start building our DREAM mobile kitchen! We both LOVE cooking. I am a Dietitian by schooling's standards so food is a big part of my life. And James is a really good cook & really enjoys making food for others! We were stoked to be able to design & build a modern mobile kitchen that was perfectly designed just for us! There were a few things on our dream tiny home kitchen wish list: - We wanted ample counter space! James and I have been living tiny for the past few years with only 1ft of counterspace to work with. This new design gave us 15 FEET!! - A big deep sink with a spray hose to make dish washing a dream! - A stove & oven combo (yay for fresh baked bread!) - Slide out garbage & compost bin - Energy efficient fridge that fit all our freshies but didn't take up all the space - Deep organized drawers that fit our cookware & pantry staples perfectly! - HOT WATER ON DEMAND!! Our current tiny home is a vintage Airstream trailer nestled in the woods here in the Canadian Pacific Northwest! We like to call her Streamy, our adventure basecamp! Sounds dreamy right? Well let us tell you that it isn't as easy as it looks & the process of building our dream tiny home on wheels (in just 60 days) was freaking hard!!! When we're not enduring these self-imposed suffer-fests (i.e. our DIY projects & long grueling hikes up mountainsides) you'll find us out on the ocean, living and sailing around the PNW on our little sailboat. #solosailing #singlehanded #seamanship #adventure #sailing #novascotia What a joy! I have to move the boat round from Lunenburg harbour to the mooring and unfortunately it’s going to be solo, and it’s going to be in the snow. However, with a little forethought and planning and then a lot of rushing around and thinking on the fly… it shouldn’t really be a problem ;)

A change of pace here on Blown Away with a relaxing sail through a picturesque canal in the Ionion Sea of Greece. Having successfully collected our new autopilot and instruments from Aktio Marine near Preveza the town quay in Lefkas fails to be the place to have it fitted. So with heavy hearts we set sail south knowing we will fit the auto pilot system ourselves but somewhere more peaceful and scenic than a busy town quay. We’ve STOPPED FILMING l Defeated by a MARINE DIESEL ENGINE l EP.36 This is part five of our YANMAR 3GM30F saga! You’ve been following our journey as we service our YANMAR diesel engine... In this episode we have some more news. After, we put the heat exchanger back together and back on the engine, put water pump and fan belt back on and the cylinder head. We go to start the engine and… we run into more issues and we decided to STOP Filming! If you have been watching our sailing couple vlog so far, you will know we took Indiana on a voyage to the Solent and sailed our sailboat back to Brighton. We came back to 6 litres of water in our YANMAR sailboat engine bilge and some serious diesel engine issues! Our YANMAR 3GM30F diesel engine needed some work! With the cost of a marine mechanic being way more than we could afford, we decided to roll up our sleeves and tackle the job head on! In the last four episodes we showed you how to remove a cylinder head, refurbish the cylinder head, which included lapping vales and skimming the mating surface and an injector overhaul with a hunt for a head gasket. You may have seen our YouTube sailing engine video 'HOW to get your ENGINE STARTED' episode earlier in the year, when we had issues cold starting our diesel engine. We guess this is the price you pay for buying a sailboat with no experience! When buying a sailboat, we thought we would have more sailing experience by now, but it seems we have got more experience in rigging and marine diesel engine maintenance! This is the reality of living aboard a sailboat. However, our Gib'sea 372 has proven herself many times over. So there's a bit more sailboat maintenance to tackle but lets hope with a little more elbow grease, we will soon be back out sailing around the UK and then one day, sailing around the world! Stay tuned for more updates as we try to get Indiana ready to eventually sail around the world! #spinnaker #amel #spinnakerpole #sailboatmaintenance #sailboatDIY Spinnaker poles are aluminium spars that help support and control various headsails on sailboats when sailing downwind. On our boat - an Amel Super Maramu - they support the genoa and ballooner/spinnaker in a "goose wing' configuration using four poles and 11 lines! However, we often found that the poles dipped into the water in heavy swell when deployed and, when stored on deck, suck out way beyond the guard rails catching the loose headsail sheets when sailing. In short, they were at best a nuisance, and at worst downright dangerous. Later models of Amels such as the Amel Super Maramu 2000's and 54's had shorter poles and simple brackets on the stanchion posts to safely store them out of harms way when not in use. So we decided to copy that design and this maintenance blog shows exactly how we did that. If you're a professional, expert or even an old salty sea dog with some good advice on spinnaker poles on sailboats, then please leave any constructive criticism, insight and advice in the comments below the videos. Santa Marta Colombia is an incredible city to stock up on provisions and we take every chance to do so. We fill every space available on zephyr with as much food as possible. It’s the biggest provision we have ever done and it proves to be the most challenging to find storage for. We also take the opportunity to do some maintenance before we undertake an 820nm sailing passage to the Bahamas. With Nat gone and James home alone on the boat.....it´s time to pick up some crew for our next voyage. We have some exciting news...we are headed to the Bahamas and we cant wait. Off Grid alternative boatlife meets on grid luxuries best of both worlds sailing Shark Bay - Ep 142 There are very few affordable things about boatlife. However, delving into nature's larder to catch your own food is one of the highlights. During our stay in Shark Bay we felt embraced by the community. Not only were we able to enjoy the comforts of Monkey Mia resort but we were also invited for a cruise around the bay on Aristocat 2 to see some of the 10 000 dugongs that call this area home. On top of that Rob and Ivan got to spend a morning learning the art of cockle farming. Special mention goes to Rob who made us a memorable meal with the cockles he and Ivan harvested.

Yesterday we prepared the starboard side of the forward head. Today we fitted temporary shelving to store things during the refit. The shelves exactly fit cheap Ikea boxes. Last call for this very important fundraiser: https://www.bonfire.com/the-a2a-community-crest/ Only a couple of days left, and it's crucial to the coming year and the work we need to do to prepare for launch. Thank you for your support! The water tanks have been fetched from MS Fabrication in Dorchester, Massachusetts, where our talented metal worker, Evan, put together four water tanks for us. Three of them are storage, and one of them is a pickup tank into which will feed water from the various other tanks via ball valves. They'll be filled from a water maker which we'll be installing much later, but that will live in the head. The tanks total 94.9 gallons according to our friendly neighborhood naval architect and water tank spiritual advisor, Satchel Douglas. As Steve explains, the pickup tank that will live in the bilge is exactly 9 gallons, and beside the fact that it will allow us to isolate water tanks and balance the water use so as to balance the loaded weight in the boat, it has an added benefit as it can act as a way of measuring daily water usage. The water tanks are held in place with NRS straps, which shouldn't see too much movement (read: opportunity for chafe) as tie-downs inside the lockers. Steve deploys all kinds of other hardware and wooden supports to hold the tanks into place as well, and goes into a good level of detail on that. Thank you so much for watching and for your support. Don't forget to grab your A2A Community Crest gear before it's gone! https://www.bonfire.com/the-a2a-community-crest/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building a 38' wooden boat in Steve's backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. After removing the wardrobes from the forward head today we got on to make it look better before we fit temporary shelving for tools and parts. That meant first cutting a hole in the bulkhead for the backing plate for the forward lower shroud. Then cutting away the remaining tabbing from the wardrobe, cleaning, sanding, acetone and then paint. By which time it was after 5pm and the promised rain had arrived. Yesterday's gravel causeway worked well when we went to B&Q for some shelf support timber and got Fish and Chips on the way back (all during heavy rain). After weeks of intense hard work, we finally had a blank canvas to start making our dream tiny home a reality! This episode we finalize the design of our airstream home & walk you through the layout! AND we attempt to build walls. Which end up being much more challenging than we anticipated. It was our first time building a wall of any kind and turns out its a little trickier to do in an airstream trailer. The trailer was not level, and the walls were curved... So how the heck do you make walls and ensure they are level, plum square and true (more carpentry words I -Allison- have learned). We work through these challenges and more this episode! Any carpenters out there? Would you have built these differently? We'd love to hear from you in the comments! On this week's segment of Allison Is Handy, I take on fiberglassing! Nottt my favorite task (sanding the fiberglass afterwards was worse). You'll probably get to relive this segment a few times over once we get working on our sailboat! haha We know we know.. we should have done this beforrrrre we painted. Turns out we didn't have perfect order of operations during the entire build but OH WELL. "You live you learn" - Alanis Finally, who votes for more Airstream Afterdark? Thanks for watching ya'll! Much love, A&J SUBSCRIBE! ► for a new video every single Wednesday https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUsg... If you're into outdoor adventures, tiny homes (on wheels & with sails), off-grid living and DIY projects, then you'll want to click that notification bell & follow along ;) WHO WE ARE We are a couple from opposite sides of the world making life together in a teeny-tiny 160 square feet. She's a Catalina 30 and we've been enjoying the challenge of restoring her & teaching ourselves how to sail! OUR STORY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vt8aijVtK_E I (Allison, the Newfie) met James (the Aussie) while working on a remote island 3 years ago. A decade working in healthcare has helped us both to appreciate the preciousness of this one beautiful life we've been given. We decided to make some BOLD moves, hit PAUSE on our conventional careers & work full time, turning our DREAMS into reality. This is the beginning of our YouTube journey & over the next few weeks we will be sharing our first steps towards making full-time adventure possible. BURIED ALIVE! Will BOAT WORK Keep Us From SAILING AROUND THE WORLD?? | Harbors Unknown EP. 56 When people think of the cruising lifestyle, visions of sailing through crystal clear water, dolphins playing at the bow, snorkeling beautiful reefs, and long walks on secluded beaches come to mind. We sold our home at the beginning of the pandemic (May 27th, 2020) and moved aboard our @SeawindCatamarans boat, Wanderlust, in September, 2020. A storage bonanza! Today we have transformed the outboard side of the corridor to the aft cabin. Originally this was dark, narrow and smelly. A long time ago we cleared the space by removing the diesel tank and diesel impregnated wood. We took out the door to the aft cabin and cut back the wardrobes to provide access to our new Pullman style double bed (which also allowed more light and a through view to the corridor). Now we have added big drawers (using more Ikea Trofast boxes) and shelves. With all this storage for everything we bring on the boat each time (unfortunately I keep needing my tools at home between boat visits) we will have to move so much less stuff out of the way when we want to do jobs. Plus it gives a glimpse of what is possible in the future. I also decided to build a gravel causeway to the ladder so we can get on and off the boat even after/during rain without paddling. This is our 4th short daily vlogs of our progress during this half term. Yesterday we ran home to hide from Storm Franklin and 60mph winds. Today we are back and have fitted our first storage drawers. Probably the cheapest storage drawers you can find for your boat refit. Thanks Ikea for the Trofast drawer boxes (£2 for the thin ones, £3.50 for the deeper ones). We fitted drawers under the new galley worktop and will add them to the aft cabin "wardrobes" and the forward head "wardrobes". We are going to try producing short daily vlogs of our progress during this half term. If you would like to support us then please use Ko-Fi to make a donation of any size https://ko-fi.com/sustainablesailing/ We are refitting a 45year old Rival 38 for a Sustainable Sailing retirement in a few years. Two years ago, when we bought Vida she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all electric (motor, cooking etc). All the rigging is being replaced with Dyneema and we are significantly re-working the cabins. So as a follow-up to our installation of the B&G Vulcan 12 Chartplotter, we decided to updated the Firmware on our B&G Triton2 Instrument Display. To do this we went to the B&G Website and downloaded the files. Doing this install is a little bit of a pain as you have to use a full size USB memory stick to load the files . Marine electronic firmware updates should be part of your routine sailboat maintenance. On the video we show you the process we followed to do the update and the final results. Check it out!
