DIY boat building: This was by far my biggest project ever: a 11m sailing yacht, weighing 9 tons, build from scratch over the years together with my wife. It was worth all the effort seeing it now swim and feeling the ocean underneath!. The planking material was made out of plastic pipe and then covered with several layers of fiber glass. This week we decide to leave the "comfort" of a safe harbour in favour of going out in to large swells and stronger winds as docklines are snapping and the boat is taking damage we put to sea. Trying to find a safer anchorage for the night is unfruitful and we head for the next best thing a little used commercial harbour set behind huge granite walls, surrounded by wrecks we await better weather to continue on our journey. Here is a glimpse of where we started after purchasing our boat. We removed lots of junk and donated many items that were cluttering the space, cleaning and organizing, to make this space our own. Next stop was the boat yard to get hauled out of the water to make some big improvements and maintenance work. Some of the items were updating solar, adding new zincs, installing under water lights, bottom paint, boot stripe, adding new logo, teak refresh, and underside maintenance. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. The windlass that is currently installed on our boat is wrong in many ways. First of all, it's a vertical windlass, but a horizontal windlass is what was really needed. Secondly, it's location puts the motor obtrusively in the middle of the forward cabin. Third, the chain dumps directly into the sleeping area of the vberth. The bottom line is that it's just wrong, wrong, wrong and it's up to us to make it right. The windlass has to be removed, the giant holes in the deck have to be repaired with fiberglass and epoxy, and we have to install a more appropriate windlass in a more logical location. Ah - the joys of remedying the mind-boggling decisions of previous owners is one of the most interesting parts of owning an old cruising sailboat. Centerline blocking does one big, important thing, and it's something that's barely noticed below decks: it adds rigidity between deckbeams along the center of the deck structure fore and aft on any boat. A nice, tight fit that's pleasing to the eye from the interior of the boat is preferred, and the rabbets into which these pieces of wood fit, when regularly and lovingly executed, are barely noticed when they're done right. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. Spectacular desert road trip sailing western Australia - Ep 148 When we were hit by lightening, two years ago, we had to replace all the cabin lights in both hulls. We put fancy lights in the starboard hull and not so fancy lights in the port hull. The results are now in and it would seem the not so fancy lights were a false economy. They have not weathered well in the salty marine environment, so out they go. Job completed we hopped in the car and drove 215 kilometers to visit the extraordinary Pinnacle desert, a stunning, surreal moonscape where we discovered magical mushroom shaped limestone rocks. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978.
