Sailing, Kayaking, Stand up paddle boarding, Hiking off the beaten pathways, enjoying yummy food and making the most of winter sailing in Turkey. After our ordeal losing our anchor and having a nightmare night we take a couple of weeks just to sort out our last boat maintenance jobs and get everything up to scratch. Unfortunately we lost our confidence so we decide to do a couple of short sails to build it up again We finally have some decent weather and were ready to move on from Fethiye, so we first sail to a small island called Kizil Ada which is about 40 minutes from Fethiye, We enjoy some kayaking, hiking and sitting outside for a change in the slightly warmer weather before then sailing onto Gocek which is about an hour and a half sail and 8 Nautical miles from Kizil Ada. We stock up a the fresh markets in Gocek before we do a day sail onto Marmaris, The boat job capital of Turkey, to do some exciting projects on the boat! STAY TUNED for those! It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. We've known our bottom paint is in dire need of some attention, so we find a DIY yard in La Paz and haul Stella J out and set to work. We can't stay on the boat while she's on the hard, so we rent an Airbnb and get a taste of what its like to live in the mexican suburbs.

Electricity & water do not mix! ⚡💦But this episode we work out how to do have BOTH in our tiny home on wheels, as we fumble through our DIY electrical and plumbing installation! In episode 5 https://youtu.be/kCPOYv-JRPw we walked you through our tiny-home design where we explained our plans for our kitchen and wetbath. We of course needed to run water to those tiny living spaces from our water tank. But the plans included a very exciting component that we didn't mention.. 🚿HOT WATER ON DEMAND! For the past year and a half James and I had been living tiny without running hot water. We had been boiling little pots & kettles on the stove to wash dishes & hands (not armpits - we did have access to a shower haha). So we were absolutely STOKED at the thought of having hot water in our tiny-home on wheels - with just a simple turn of the tap! 🛁 💡Another exciting component of our tiny-home build was of course, having POWER! (candles are nice but it was 2021. We're not living in the dark ages). At this point in our tiny home build we were planning to be plugged-in, meaning we weren't yet thinking about any off-grid components🔌 But running our electrical was still a little tricky. Since we didn't do a 'shell-off' Airstream restoration, we couldn't hide the electrical wires behind the skins (walls). But we had mapped out a plan to run all of our electrical wires underneath the cabinetry, which meant the wires had to be run before we could anchor the cabinetry down to the floor and install our countertops in our tiny home 🚌 We had dabbled in a teeeeny bit of electrical during our van-life builds but this was a power level up from that! Installing electrical can be dangerous! So we consulted with an electrician before, during and after the install and we would recommend you do the same if you're planning on a DIY electrical install yourself! Repairs were required for the port lights and hatches. One of the most critical boat equipment parts is the bilge pump, so you better have it running and solidly installed, because if you need it, hopefully never, it has to remove the water in the bilge as quickly as possible. Because my old one got a bit screwed inside, I got a new one in Martinique, same brand and debit power - RULE 1.100 GPH, just before heading on to the next destination... We finish fitting our first watertight bulkhead, a huge upgrade from the zero watertight bulkheads in our, as original, 1977 Rival 38 Centre Cockpit Ketch. We will be making the remaining original bulkhead watertight, adding one more and making the cabin entrance watertight to well above the waterline. This will create space to store our anchor chain a couple of meters further aft which should be great for stability and a better motion in waves. Note that we are not making any "unsinkable" claims!!! But we are creating a more useful space for us and improving both sailing and anchoring capabilities. That will come down the line as we prepare our 45 year old Rival 38 for a Sustainable Sailing retirement in a few years. Two and a half years ago, when we bought Vida, she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel, and paraffin equipment as well as all the plumbing and electrics. We have composting toilets, are installing an electric motor and all electric cooking. We are fitting a huge solar array and probably a wind generator. We have replaced all the windows, removed all the headlining and more. We are replacing all the standing rigging with Dyneema synthetic rigging. This is the biggest sustainability project of our lives as we prepare for a retirement when we want to cruise the world using zero fossil fuels on a very low budget. Killin' it CLIFF JUMPING Rottnest Island Sailing Western Australia Ep 146 After Rob completes a 'solo sail with company' to the beautiful anchorage of Parker Point on Rottnest Islands southern shores, Troy and Pascale, of @FreeRangeLiving fame took us on a cycle tour down memory lane to Jump Rock where Rachel was forced to face one of her biggest fears (after giant moths). Rachel has sailed oceans, swum with a tiger shark, and given birth with no pain relief but being asked to leap from eight meters into the sea was almost her undoing. It's not the height that was the problem, she is happy to be hoisted to the top of the mast any day of the week, just don't ask her to jump down from there. Could she conquered her fears? It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. I know we didn't fix the roof, strip and rebuild the deck saloon windows , re paint the deck and do the varnishing , but seriously it's been cold here ! This episode we make beautiful walnut countertops for our tiny home on wheels...from scratch, outside, in the snow❄ Despite the frigid cold, this project was our favorite part of our tiny home build. And the short cold snowy Canadian winter days weren't helping...but this day really helped to lift & brighten our spirits!🌞 It was a pretty good feeling, to be able to craft gorgeous countertops for our home, using wood from a beautiful walnut tree, with our OWN TWO HANDS. We had never made countertops before. We had never milled wood before! Without fancy tools or a workspace we rigged up a way to make our countertops outdoors, ourselves (!) and that left us feeling pretty dang proud. The snow gently falling on the tree canopy above us.. the smell of freshly cut wood. The joy of creative expression we felt as we arranged and glued each unique piece of walnut to create a beautiful wooden mosaic. Something we would get to use an admire for years to come! A&J FYI | Our Countertop Process We considered other countertop options like laminate, Corian as well as many different types of wood. In the end we went with walnut because its a natural material & something we felt personally connected to. In the world of trees, walnut is a beautiful durable wood that will hold up well over time. Milling it ourselves was tedious but rewarding. We then craft fully arranged & glued (using CA and wood glue) each panel to plywood and left it to cure overnight.
