Sailing has become second nature, so we are diving further into the liveaboard lifestyle. Boat life is a constant struggle between what you WANT to do and what you are actually ABLE to do. Rarely does anything go as planned and everyday presents a new set of challenges to overcome. Some of them the boat decides for you, some of them are self inflicted, but all are an opportunity to learn and grow. 📊 Engine Maintenance Spreadsheet (read only): https://bit.ly/3MZYJpz For an editable version - check out our Patreon page: https://www.patreon.com/folsomoceanviews ! Well the holiday seems a distant memory and we jumped straight in this week. This week has been full of DIY - I started (and finished!) the galley worktop, mum did lots of unscrewing, and I filled the cabinets with stuff. Also this week I used the oven for the first time to cook dinner one evening. It's soooo small so it wasn't easy, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. I also had my first guest when a friend visited me - I'll share her reaction in a future video. Coming next week...painting the bedroom and installing the internet :)
Preparations for the Asia Expedition 2022/23 continues! On March 8, the ship went to the shipyard Gotenius Varv in Gothenburg. This short video is of the ship going upriver to the shipyard, and for the first time ever passing under the new bridge in Gothenburg, Hisingsbron. Work at the shipyard is now underway. The ship will be washed and painted, and one of the main jobs is to caulk and pitch the hull. Maintenance of the under water over board vents will also be carried out, as well as maintenance of the rudder.
My Bavaria 32 was sold in August 2021 and since then I have worked at my job at the paperbag factory to get the money needed for a bigger boat. To get the money for the boat I have transferred a amount of money from my salary account to a savings account every month, and at the same time kept my expenses down to save as many money as possible. As it looks right now it is possible to buy a boat in the spring/summer of 2022. My biggest problem is to find the right one with shallow draft, bow thruster, furling main, heat and so on. I see many good offers but the problem is the boats is in the 44-47 foot range which is too big for my waterspot and to big in general regarding maintenance and ownership in the long run.

#colombia #sailing colombia #coastal sailing #lightening at sea #lightening storms #passage making #teenagers on boats #sailing teens The sail from Curaçao to Colombia takes you around one of the potentially most challenging sailing routes in the world because of how the wind and sea state can build up. In the three day three night passage, we didn't have this problem but we did have to dodge a lot of lightening storms and when we finally arrived in Santa Marta, the lightening storm caught us up! Blowing and Not Going This time on Sailing Intermission…we’re stuck at dock. The plan was to leave for another marina where we would have easy access to motoring and hopefully finally sailing. After discovering a snafu on our documentation the move was abandoned. We’ve taken this time to do multiple DIY projects: · Documentation Dilemma Fix – hopefully we’ll be able to sail…we are a sailing channel! · New Battery Charger · Electroscan cleaning of battery connection: Coast Guard Approved Type 1 MSD (Marine Sanitation Device) · Anchor Check · Water Tender · Life Vest/Jacket Blow Check- we use the terms interchangeable knowing jackets turn the wearer face up in the water even if unconscious…hopefully 😊 · Life Raft Thank you to our subscribers for their continued support! Sailing in fog and avoiding a collision - Ep 145 On our last days in The Abrolhos Islands we took a walk on semi inhabited Rat Island, one of the few islands that plays host to the rock lobster fishermen who spend several months, every year working away from home in this beautiful windswept place. We were then rewarded for our patience by the weather gods who sent us a lovely Northerly to carry us 240nm south to Rottnest Island just off the coast of Perth. Up goes Miss Ribena and cue sea sickness. However, it was our second day of sailing that brought us the most trouble first a pea souper wet fog followed by a near collision with an inquisitive tug boat. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #TheCruisingKiwis

The other week the Narrowboat Noob crew (me and mum!) were in Wales for a week in a holiday cottage in Talsarnau. These are some of our adventures. There's no narrowboats in this video so feel free to skip it if it's not your thing - join me for my Monday video, back on the boat as normal for some serious DIY! Before you ask why I didn't go away on the boat, this cottage had been booked from before I bought the boat, plus I love Wales and there's not a lot of it you can explore by canal sadly!
In this episode after our troubles getting into the marina, James and I finally get settled and dock in the famous Bert Jabin marina in Annapolis Philippa discusses the issue of trying to get into dock spaces because of the wooden posts and risking pulling the stanchions out if the fenders are left on. We turn the boat upside down more than once getting essential maintenance and repairs done. We discuss how great B&G have been as they gave us some replacement parts whilst not under warranty, we give thanks to B&G.. James looks at the wiring diagrams More boat jobs means, another upside-down boat. We get a taster of the weather in Annapolis and realise just how changeable the weather is We meet Keith – Bert Jabin’s treasure, dock Master in chief W fuel up Another storm sets in as we wonder why we are the only yacht anchored outside back creek?!..... Open house May 2022 information is here: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/visitor-welcome The head might be a small space, but there are a lot of details that have required a great deal of planning and critical decision-making. Steve discusses and installs the AirHead, the sink that will work with a foot pump, and the watermaker components and where they'll go. Foregoing a hot water system and pressurized water, but opting into a reverse osmosis/desalination system, while installing a desiccating head over a water-fed head with a 15-gallon black water holding tank results in a good mix of simplicity and amenity that will serve well for long-term cruising. Steve's philosophy is to be as self-sufficient as possible and to keep things simple, maintenance-wise. The bilge tanks are installed. One is a gray water holding tank for the sinks and shower pan. The other is a pickup tank for freshwater that will serve the foot pumps and sinks in both the head and galley. And the freshwater tank inside the settee is installed permanently and snugly into its home. It's exciting to see the first piece of PEX piping in place that will feed into the pickup tank. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur boat builder building a 38' wooden boat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Jane is back and we do a little more destruction before starting to rebuild the forecabin, starting on our first watertight bulkhead using a technique from Ian Nicolson to avoid hard spots in the hull where the bulkhead is attached. In coming weeks we will be transforming this cabin as preparation of our 45 year old Rival 38 for a Sustainable Sailing retirement in a few years. Two years ago, when we bought Vida she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all electric (motor, cooking etc). All the rigging is being replaced with Dyneema and we are significantly re-working the cabins. Join us this week during our Tiny Home Project, as we struggle through the build during the dead of a CANADIAN WINTER!❄ The past few weeks you've watched us work tirelessly to rebuild this run-down vintage Airstream trailer, in an attempt to transform it into our modern tiny home on wheels🚌 Completing this build in just 60 days with minimal carpentry experience was challenging enough. But it was also WINTER & without a workshop, things were REALLY starting to get difficult😅 With other competing commitments and both of us working in healthcare amidst a pandemic, we were starting to burn out QUICK. BUT we were doing our best to support each other, to stay positive and celebrate even the smallest of wins 👊 This episode we build face frames for our cabinetry! 🤔If we did it all over again, we would have crafted the cabinet face frames a little differently. Although the process we decided on made sense in theory, it chewed up a lot of our precious time (and plywood)! Done an alternate way, installing individual rails and stills, the end result likely would have been the same. Oh well, we learned something! That's why were out here doing this all in the first place. Reminder that it really isn't about the end result. The growth & reward is all in the process! Thanks for watching everyone! If you liked this week's episode don't forget to give it a thumbs up👍 And we'd love to chat with you in the comments! 📽Next episode is bliss! We mill a beautiful slab of walnut to make gorgeous wood countertops! Which end up being our favorite accent in our tiny home 🤗 Subscribe & hit that notification bell so you don't miss it!🔔 Until then, Cheers! If you're into outdoor adventures, tiny homes (on wheels & with sails), off-grid living and DIY projects, then you'll want to click that notification bell & follow along ;) WHO WE ARE We are a couple from opposite sides of the world making life together in a teeny-tiny 160 square feet. Our current tiny home is a vintage Airstream trailer nestled in the woods here in the Canadian Pacific Northwest! We like to call her Streamy, our adventure basecamp! Sounds dreamy right? Well let us tell you that it isn't as easy as it looks & the process of building our dream tiny home on wheels (in just 60 days) was freaking hard!!! When we're not enduring these self-imposed suffer-fests (i.e. our DIY projects & long grueling hikes up mountainsides) you'll find us out on the ocean, living and sailing around the PNW on our little sailboat. She's a Catalina 30 and we've been enjoying the challenge of restoring her & teaching ourselves how to sail! OUR STORY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vt8aijVtK_E I (Allison, the Newfie) met James (the Aussie) while working on a remote island 3 years ago. A decade working in healthcare has helped us both to appreciate the preciousness of this one beautiful life we've been given. Viewing TIME as our most valuable gift, we've been feeling an urgency in our lives to Live All Out! We decided to make some BOLD moves, hit PAUSE on our conventional careers & work full time, turning our DREAMS into reality. This is the beginning of our YouTube journey & over the next few weeks we will be sharing our first steps towards making full-time adventure possible. We'll be posting weekly videos that document our DIY projects, tiny-home living & our land & sea adventures. Thanks for watching! Much love, A&J Connect with us! The Mobile Boat Guys specialize in the restoration of protection of gelcoat finishes. Gelcoat surfaces differ from clear coat (the paint found on cars), in that gelcoat is a lot more forgiving than clear coat because it is a thicker material. There are several ways to remove oxidation from gel-coat surfaces--wetsanding, compounding, polishing and a combination of all of the above. The key to keeping up with your boats appearance is having a proper maintenance schedule where you are waxing once or twice a season. However, how you store your boat when its not in use and the weather conditions your boat is exposed to will also determine how often you need to wax the gel-coat surfaces.
#optimist #sailingdinghy #dinghystand #optimiststand #optimiststore #dinghystore #dinghystorage Our optimist dinghy travels everywhere with us, but it's bulky - so how do we do it? Carrying on the davits is unsafe on ocean crossings and our RIB is stored on the aftdeck when on the open sea, so that space is spoken for. The foredeck is the only practical place to store it, but it prevents the hatches from opening. What we needed was a cradle/stand that keeps it stable and secure on deck, but also allows for the hatches to open. The optimist also needed to be stored upside down, to prevent it filling with rain water or sea water when the foredeck gets swamped. We also wanted the cradle/stand to be stored out of the way with a minimum of fuss when not in use - like when we're at anchor and the optimist is in the water - which meant a minimalist/collapsable design. The solution was to create two cross brace supports moulded top the shape of the deck. While we've travelled thousands of miles like this, the foredeck does look a little 'cluttered' and the lines holding the optimist down can be a bit of a trip hazard. The kids have also outgrown the optimist a bit now so it's getting less use. So the next upgrade on our long 'wish list' is an inflatable catamaran like the 'Grabner Happy Cat' or 'Smart Cat' which we tried in Spain.. and are super fun as well as seemingly practical to store. If you're a professional, expert or even an old salty sea dog with some good advice, hints or tips on making dinghy stands and cradles for sailboats, or have experience of infallible dinghies/catamarans then please leave any constructive criticism, insight and advice in the comments below the videos. Life in PERFECT harmony sailing Western Australia Ep 144 This is our second trip to the Abrolhos Islands. We love them for their history, their marine life and their wind, which between September and May is plentiful. What better way to get in day after day of kiting than in these low lying islands whose protection delivers 20 to 30 knots of wind with little to no swell. We were also blown away (did you see what I did there?) by the abundance of friendly seals and an incredible lagoon with a huge wall of sea anemones repleat with hundreds of our favorite fish, The clown fish. What's not to love. And Rob gets handy jimmying up a quick fix to our burst hot water pipe. Thank you for helping keep us afloat and supporting the creative process.

They're more than employees, of course. KP came to us by way of a long-time friendship with Annie B. They met in high school, and somehow both ended up working in the wooden boat world. KP comes to Acorn to Arabella with both sailing and carpentry experience, and has their 100 ton captain's license as well. After a couple of summers on schooner Mary Day out of Camden and then attending Carpenter's Boat Shop in 2004 in Pemaquid, Maine. We'll see KP's favorite tools, too. Through KP's orientation, you'll also get a peek into the next steps for Arabella in the coming few months. What's up with the rest of the planking? What about laying the deck? Christopher Mawdsley: So I'm Christopher Mawdsley and I am married to... Valerie Mawdsley: Valerie Mawdsley. Christopher Mawdsley: And we bought our Astréa 42, Fountaine Pajot Astréa 42 from Atlantic Cruising Yachts, and we are very happy with that decision and with the choice of that sailboat. And we've chartered many times actually in the British Virgin Islands and also in Guadalupe. And we noticed a transition away from keelboats to catamarans in the industry. And we really took the plunge in 2018 when we met Josef Buxton of Atlantic Cruising Yachts and established a relationship at that time with Josef. He showed us around, I think it was the Isla 40 actually at that time that we looked at. And then we subsequently in the following April boat show, Josef met us and in fact had reached out to us prior to that boat show to reconnect and discuss boat ownership and boat ownership as a business. And so we met Josef at the 2019 spring boat show and took a look at an Astréa 42 at that boat show, fell in love with the boat, and really the relationship took off from there and we signed a contract actually in September of 2019 on a new Astréa 42. And so really that takes us from kind of cradle up until the current moment. We now have our Astréa 42 and she is in charter in the US Virgin Islands. Valerie Mawdsley: Our boat was built during COVID, so the problem was it was being delayed in the factory in France by two to three, four months. What Josef did was he found another boat, an Astréa 42, whose order was being canceled and he put us back into that slot, and so we were able to get our boat almost at the same time we had the original delivery date instead of way into the spring of 2021. So I want to make a call out for Josef for that because he was the one that called and said ACY, let's put their boat up in that empty space. So we really appreciated that. Well, we set it up as a Business Yacht Ownership because we wanted to not just ... We are not retired. We do not have time to go and spend on our boat. We don't have the resources right now to buy a big yacht like we did and not get some income from it. So the hook that got us into purchasing this through ACY and Architect Advisors is the fact that we could run it as a business. So that was what we wanted to do. We can do it for four or five years, chartering our boat out, and then at that point, we can make a decision whether we want to buy another one, whether we want to sell it, or whether we want to live on it. Christopher Mawdsley: And we didn't opt for everything. I think we were selective, but we got- Valerie Mawdsley: We didn't Christopher Mawdsley: We didn't. Valerie Mawdsley: I thought we did. Christopher Mawdsley: But we got a very well-appointed boat through that relationship with Josef and also Ken Krasko, who in the later phases of concluding the actual purchase and the final purchase order before we went to the build process, Ken Krasko was very informative in that aspect as well and told us some of the ups and downs, the ins and outs of what each system might imply in terms of long term ownership and maintenance. So we found the whole ACY team actually was very supportive throughout the entire process. Valerie Mawdsley: Lauren Miller, Kris Vereen, all the office staff during the time that we had ordered the boat, before we got the boat. Any time you have an event up here in Annapolis, we try to come to it. Support ACY.

When is the best time to tackle sailboat maintenance on passage? When something goes wrong! Recorded yesterday and uploaded today (10th March 2022) this week's Casting Off Podcast covers a lot of ground, including our first time sailing in remote Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) and some of the dangers that can bring. How long should you wait before mending things that go wrong at home or on your boat? We talk about this and how we deal with these challenges on a 1500 mile passage in such remote areas of the globe. And we discuss a recent event where, without that attention to detail, our friend's boat could have been lost... Now it's time for birthday cake on shore at friendly Tarakan. ☕ Support us on PATREON, FTBMates or the Rum Fund - https://followtheboat.com/pub/ 🍻 TWEET US! We have been working HARD, relentlessly renovating this run-down vintage Airstream trailer in an attempt to transform it into our modern tiny home on wheels! 🚌 We had a 60 day deadline & very little carpentry experience but despite the challenges we were still on track and hanging in there - barreling towards our goal of turning this hunk of aluminum into our shiny adventure basecamp! 👊 At this point, we were mid-way through the build and had multiple projects happening all at once. Every project was started but nothing was finished and things were feeling a littttle chaotic to say the least! 😅 Most days it felt like a game of Tetris inside (and outside) the Airstream, as we moved things around from one place to another to make room for the next project underway. We laid awake at night wishing the cabinets would start moving themselves around so that we could have a break! Last week we were finally able to lay the flooring AND we finished constructing our cabinets! We were so excited to finally get to building our dream mobile kitchen (the biggest part of our tiny home)! The next step, was to get the cabinets ready for installation. But there was a longgg list of things left to do before we could anchor the cabinets down to the floor in our tiny mobile home. This episode our tiny home starts to take shape! We get to framing out our bed and closet! And when I head back to work, James takes on another solo project - crafting our Airstream's classic, curved walls! To make the curved walls, James has to learn how to Scribe, which turned out to be a veryyy tedious task. 0:00 Painting cabinets 1:40 Intro 8:10 What is scribing? Also can we get a round of applause for James who managed to scribe (30+ TIMES) AND film at the same time?!?!?! BRAVO!!!! 👏 Sharing this process with you all has been really rad! We love chatting with you in the comments & really appreciate all your thoughtful and kind words ♥ Thanks for being here and for all your support! If you're enjoying the episodes each week, don't forget to subscribe and give the video a thumbs up! It really helps us out! See you all during next week's struggle, when winter finally arrives and we press on through the build while dealing with all the bloody snow! Until then, Cheers! A&J SUBSCRIBE! ► for a new video every single Wednesday https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUsg... We like to call her Streamy - our adventure basecamp! Much love, A & J Connect with us! When Jane leaves me alone on the boat the result is destruction! So on Friday the whole forecabin got ripped out to prepare the way for fitting our windlass on deck, a new chain locker, new water tank, emergency watertight compartment, new single bunk and storage. If you would like to support us then please use Ko-Fi to make a donation of any size https://ko-fi.com/sustainablesailing/ Lots more detail on our blog at https://sustainablesailing.net/ Visit our shop at https://sustainablesailing.teemill.com/ for hoodies, t-shirts and bags. #BoatRefit #forecabin #destruction Sadly video was delayed by a problem with a new version of Kdenlive that cut the audio from the first uploaded version.
This weeks video starts telling the story of our new Electronics and the installation process for upgrading the old Simrad IS12 displays which had seen better days after 15 years in service to the newer and better systems from Simrad / B and G We also receive a delivery from the UK containing some long awaited parts both for the boat and for our cameras, we hope you enjoy the video , if you do please consider subscribing and sharing the video with your friends. Marina Life! Only 10 days left in the marina before we start our sailing adventure for 2022, sailing back into Greece, then onto Albania! So we have plenty of Sailboat Maintenance to do before we head back out on anchor! Major service of the boat's engine and Generator and installing our new 12 volt fridge/freezer amongst the crappy winter weather! Woohoo the things we look forward to doing the least on a sailboat but have to be done for us to keep on living the sailing liveaboard life! And what better way to learn your boat inside and out, then by doing it all yourself! Plus we choose to do as much as we can to save money because boy do boats empty your pockets! After one month of sailing in the Bahamas, we wanted to share EXACTLY how much money we spent. We tracked every penny from what we spent on big items like our permits to enter the country, to necessities like food and fuel, to the little fees that add up like trash removal and books for entertainment. If you have ever wanted to know what does it cost to live aboard a sailboat, look no further. We also provide detailed breakdowns of every dollar we spend on boat maintenance, dockage, and lifestyle over on our Patreon if you are looking for more details on a monthly basis Tiller HQ 👉 https://bit.ly/3mv33ze Patreon 👉https://www.patreon.com/folsomoceanviews.
