Niklas Zennstrom is famous amongst other things for his fleet of state-of-the-art, successful RAN Racing boats. This latest RAN, in the Fastnet Race, was ighly fancied but as things go, sometimes things go wrong or beaks. Bouwe Begging was sailing with Niklas' fantastic crew in this years' Fastnet Race and predictions were that they were fancied for handicap rewards. But, Alas it was not to be and they had to retire from the race after abashing in the Solent. Oh well, theres' always next time. But it is a wicked looking weapon.

We first met Chris Sheehan and the Warrior Won team when they arrived in Hobart at the end of 2022 RSHYR. It made for a memorable interview not only in learning how the details of the Warrior Won campaign had been developed, but also because a 35 knot storm burst hit Hobart in the middle of the interview! The Hobart race was one of a full suite of ocean classics on the Warrior Won program, as you’ll hear in the interview. Chris has gone next level for the Rolex Fastnet race, convening a very impressive Brains Trust that includes Will Oxley, Stu Bannatyne and Richard Clark.

Yesterday afternoon the Solent shoreline was packed deep with spectators braving the conditions to witness the greatest assortment of offshore yacht racing hardware ever assembled. The special 50th edition of the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s Rolex Fastnet Race set sail with 430 yachts - up from the previous record of 388 that took the last pre-COVID race in 2019. While pundits were comparing the wind this afternoon to that of the last Rolex Fastnet Race in 2021, in fact it was gustier and conditions were otherwise quite different with a densely overcast sky, drizzle that built to rain, and enough mist to obscure the mainland. What was consistent was the heinous washing machine seastate that competitors encountered at the western exit of the Solent at Hurst Narrows, as they passed the Isle of Wight’s most famous landmark, the Needles and beyond. As usual this built increasingly with the ebb tide, especially affecting the smaller yachts.
