In 1996 there were no recycle options at the destination, it would have been piled in a land fill, burned or dumped in the sea. Better put metal cans on 4000 meters depth, could even serve as home for biological life as it slowly degrades into its original state. All plastic was taken ashore and probably burned by the authorities. And to get some perspective: what would be the environmental impact of flying across the Atlantic instead of sailing? Imagine a place stuffed with gems, collected in one place, likened to a treasure chest that pirates dream about. This is the Nottage Maritime Institute, for modern day pirates who adore the treasures of maritime history. Placed in a town rich with artists and culturally grounded folk, Wivenhoe's heart and old quarter overlooks the river Colne. I was asked to take photographs that represent the one storey 'treasure chest', as I like to call it. Books, photographs, ensigns, artifacts and of course models, half and full, of locally famous yachts and working boats. Not only is this place kind on the eye, it is a charitable home for those who needed to learn, and it still retains these foundations offering boat building, seamanship and navigation courses. The Nottage gets its name from Captain Charles Nottage, the only child of George Swann Nottage and Martha Warner who were reputable off their accord in founding London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company, a real success in its era. George Swann Nottage died in office as Lord Mayor of London in 1885, naturally as an alderman of the City of London. His son - Charles George Nottage was born in 1852 and educated at Jesus College, Cambridge (BA and LLB 1879), was admitted to the Inner Temple, being subsequently called to the Bar on 11th May 1881. Nottage, generally known in yacht racing circles as 'Captain Nottage' because of his army ranking in the Devon Militia Artillery from 1885. He first owned yacht 'Foxhound', (Wm Fife I, built at Fairlie's), Scotland and he raced her from approximately 1884. A 58 foot cutter/35 tons, built by Fife of Fairlie in 1870 and Nottage sold her to the American yachtsman Harry North in 1889 when he bought yacht 'Deerhound' (seen as a framed photograph in the photos above). 'Deerhound' was to become his famous yacht. Her lines were drawn by G.L. Watson. Deerhound was launched in 1889, her Gross Registered Tonnage being 56 tons, overall length 72 feet 4 inches, waterline length 58 feet 10 inches and beam 13 feet 3 inches. Rigged as a cutter, only the best canvas would suit, Lapthorn and Ratseys sails. She was a '40 rater' by the Yacht Racing Association and raced in that class. Immediately successful as a racing yacht, winning the Queens Cup in August 18th 1890. In total she won Nottage nineteen prizes in 1890 and was top of her class in that year. Charles Nottage sailed Deerhound around the world and wrote "In Search of Climate", first published in 1894. Captain Charles Nottage was regularly in the press, both British and Continental newspapers who revealed results from racing. He had become a fairly famous yachtsman who stayed loyal in keeping local Essex crew and captains or masters of sailing in work. He belonged to eleven yacht clubs - ten of them Royal clubs. It seems that failing health exceeded his chances of enjoying Deerhound for much longer, he sold her to Marquis Ridolfi in approximately 1892. Nottage died two years after selling Deerhound, in London on 24th December 1894. In his will, he left 13,000 for the establishment of the Nottage Institute at Wivenhoe in Essex, where his crews came from, in order to instruct yachtsmen and other sailors, especially those from the Wivenhoe area, to navigation. This Institute, now known as the Nottage Maritime Institute, still exists in Wivenhoe. He also left money to the Yacht Racing Association for the annual award of what was to be called 'The Nottage Cup' but this bequest failed to meet appropriate charitable trust legislation and so could not be implemented until 1955. Deerhound is thought to have the following history after being sold to Marquis Ridolfi: Her name was changed to 'Oretta', she was based in Livorno and subsequently Naples for the next twenty years, she changed hands several times, being renamed 'LUISA' in 1898, when bought by Vincenzo Murolo, and 'LUISA M.' in 1903. She was last owned by Ernesto Murolo from 1909 to 1911 and seems to have disappeared from Lloyd's Register of Yachts in 1912. Amongst these photographs you will find 'Foxglove', that was crewed by local sailors and her Captain Harry Garrad, of Wivenhoe (who are shown in the group portrait). Foxglove was registered to R.V.Y.C, built in Southampton by J.G. Fay & Co. Launched in 1887 and owned by W.B. Paget Esq. of Loughborough, England. She is believed to have been broken up in 1918. Within the depths of the Oxfordshire countryside lies a series of sheds that are home to Collars Oars which has been crafting beautiful oars and spars for 75 years. The current owner Jeremy Freeland's connection with Collars Oars began in 1998 when he took over the helm following the retirement Richard Scaldwell. In June of 2002, Jeremy purchased Collars from Bossoms Boatyard and formed Freeland Yacht Spars Limited. With this renewed focus, he was able to bring the Collars brand into the 21st Century. 'A commitment to Quality' became his vision - and the Collars brand remains the World's best... with spars, oars and masts on boats like Merrymaid, Mariquita, Kindly Light and almost; most classics in commission in the med and beyond. The Mylne Yacht Design archive, which is one of the most complete in the world, comes alive in this film. Here Mylne's work, among other designs, are sailing and racing off the west coast of Scotland, around the Isle of Bute and on the River Clyde, where Alfred Mylne I established the Bute Slip Dock - the builder of choice among others including, Alexander Robertson and Sons Ltd. Alfred Mylne I designed some of the most beautiful yachts for cruising and racing, looking through the archive, it seems there are many with complete plans: The 15 metre rule designed 'Ostara' built in 1909, by Robert McAlister & Son, was an early design for Sir William P Burton who progressed to helm Shamrock IV in the 1920 America's Cup races for his friend and business partner Sir Thomas Lipton. Lost during the Russian Revolution with her aristocratic Russian family, her final resting place location cannot be confirmed but owner of the Mylne Yacht Design, David Gray is in conversation with a possible lead.... The work scheduled so far will include: removal of masts and rigging removal of teak deck osmosis treatment to the hull fill, fare and respray of topsides, deck, masts and booms rebuilding of external storage boxes fitting new navigation system If the budget allows, we would also like to undertake some interior carpentry, including: new sole boards reveneering repositioning of chart table removal of forward heads redesign of forepeak resurfacing of galley and rear heads engine service Each week we plan to update followtheboat with a progress report of work done to the boat, including a number of photographs and video clips. This will culminate in an article for Sailing Today. PSS Boatyard Phithak Sinchai Shipyard, or Phithak Shipyard and Services to English-speaking mariners, is based in the village of Ban Chebilang, approx. 15km north-west of Satun, south Thailand. It traditionally served the huge number of fishing boats in the area but in recent years has proved its mettle in providing services for the leisure industry. Wood, steel and fibreglass are all catered for. More details of the location can be found here. Chebilang is a lively fishing village. The cafes immediately opposite the yard offer the workers excellent food. We can heartily recommend Dom’s place at the end. Her culinary skills deserve international recognition and she surprises us every day with a new dish. Checking In I mention checking-in since a few people asked about rumours circulating re bringing a boat in to Thailand. From what we understood at customs, we have a license to keep the boat in the yard for six months, which may be extended for a further four. Since we don’t intend to be here that long this isn’t relevant to us but we are sure the boatyard would be able to help and advise on this issue should it be required. We were picked up by Moo the moment we could get off the boat who escorted us to immigration, customs and passport control. Note that in Satun these offices close by 4.30pm. Yes, his name really is Moo! Full Thai names are unpronounceable, so we’ve had to get used to abbreviations like Moo, Pon, Un, On, Ton… Satun and Accommodation Since the boat is being stripped we opted to find accommodation in Satun, the closest large town to PSS. I’m pleased to say that Satun is not your typical Thai tourist resort. It is predominantly Muslim and there is little for the passing traveller except the experience of an authentic Thai town. We love it here and it is one of the reasons why we chose PSS. Aside from the boatyard facilities, location was important to us since this will be our home for the next few months. We checked out a couple of houses within the centre of Satun but found them to be dark and depressing. We were after two bedrooms, one to be used as storage, but stumbled upon a new build one-bedroomed joint with verandah in the north-east of Satun. Location was perfect and it’s off-road enough that we’ll be able to let Millie roam the enclosed garden! We’ve hired a scooter so getting around is easy enough. The commute to ‘work’ is an absolute joy. We’re quickly in the countryside where the main road to Chebilang takes us through rubber plantations and rivers. The journey back in the setting sun is even more beautiful, especially after an ‘end-of-work’ beer with fellow liveaboards. Haul Out PSS is located on an estuary, so there are tidal considerations for those with a significant draft (sail boats). We anchored outside the entrance to the estuary to the north (this avoids the many fishing boats that shoot up and down the estuary coming in and out of Chebilang) and spent a night listening to curious noises coming from the surrounding mangroves.
