It's January and that means Las Vegas time on Mission Bay in San Diego. Fleet 495 is resurrecting a fund raiser that combines two days of racing with a casino night -- that's Serious Sailing and Serious Fun. The money raised this year supports the Mission Bay Jr. Sailing Program and the fleet. That's in keeping with the fleet's direction to make sure that young sailors are exposed to the Snipe and to the camaraderie that is the bedrock of the Class. There were plenty of juniors sailing and three of the top five boats had juniors on board. That's a good ratio given how tough this fleet is. The fleet also makes sure that every boat is going as fast as possible. You'll see those who've been sailing the boat for years mentoring those who are just getting into the fleet, helping them tune the boat and giving them tips on how to handle the tricky conditions of Mission Bay. There was a little bit of everything over the two days of racing. There was rain. There was sun. There was breeze to hike in and zephyrs where the crew needed to crouch in the boat. The winning skipper said it took a lot of luck to win in those conditions, but when you look at the final box scores, the top competitors always seem to make their own luck.

** NOW SOLD ** 'Pekljus' is a Radford designed IOOD50 developed specifically for short-handed, long distance racing with a deep bulb keel, water ballast, large rig and minimum accommodation. The cockpit and cuddy cabin are ideal for the purpose with all the control lines leading to the relatively small cockpit where everything is within easy reach. The cockpit has liferaft stowage and four large tail boxes for all the sheets and halyards. The cuddy cabin gives excellent "on deck" protection for the crew and further shields the watertight companionway door. Built by McIntyre Marine to very high quality, she is engineered to take on the Southern Ocean. Her hull is Divinycell core sandwiched between hand-laid glass impregnated with isothalic resins with vinyl-ester tie layers. The deck is balsa cored, the keel is a stainless steel foil with a lead bulb through bolted athwart-ships. The keel foil is inserted in a keel box recessed into the hull and the keel is designed for easy removal for transport. The boat is equipped to Cat 1 equivalent, although some of the safety gear is out of date. The first MC 38, Carbonado, in North America competed in the 2012 Key West Race Week, winning her High Performance Division. In the first race of the week, Carbonado beat the fastest Farr 400 by an elapsed time of a minute over 7.40 nautical mile race. Owners Rob and Sandy Butler were extremely pleased with their new boat, which they only took delivery of 3 weeks prior.
