This is the first part of my North Wind Expedition 2016. I will cross the North Sea over to Shetland, and the North Atlantic Ocean to the Faroe Islands to show people my passion of ocean sailing. Everything will be covered in beautiful pictures filled with action from the wrath of the huge oceans around us. The 17th of March 2016, I sailed across the North Sea alone to Shetland. The loft is based in Gosport, on the southern coast of the UK, and houses a number of global departments under one roof. These include Superyacht finishing and sail production for One Design and North Sails 3Di. As NorthSails’ European flagship facility, the loft enables North Sails to remain at the forefront of sail technology, innovation and manufacturing. Gosport is the first loft in the world to specialise in superyacht sails, and it’s gigantic raised floor – measuring 1,950m2 – is the largest ever built. A team of 9 designers and 82 staff members are aided by state-of-the-art technology and equipment, ensuring sails are delivered quickly, and safely – with no compromises in quality. The space is split into two manufacturing bays, and the main floor is designed to cater to superyacht sail finishing. This might not be the most in depth guide but hopefully it will point you in the right direction of how to build yourself a cheap AIS-receiver from a Raspberry Pi and a DVB-T dongle for less than $50. Follow the steps in the guide and you'll have a working AIS-receiver. First of all, and MOST IMPORTANTLY make sure to buy a dongle with a compatible chip! 1. Download rtl_ais from github: https://github.com/dgiardini/rtl-ais Follow the instructions, and make sure to calibrate the PPM to offset the internal error of your dongle. It is time to cross the Bay of Biscay! But first we sail from Guernsey to Camaret Sur Mer in Brittany, France. During our three day stay we explore the natural park around Camaret Sur Mer and prepare for the crossing. On the Bay of Biscay we meet a lot of dolphins and on the first night around 50 pilot whales swim with RAN. Amazing! The second day the wind dies and we start the motor. After a few hours some problems with the gear box appears and we have to stop the motor and continue to sail in very weak wind with the sails slamming. The third day we arrive to A Coruña, Spain. Finally sun and warm weather! Update! The problem with the transmission is solved. It seems to have been originating from something that got stuck in the prop. We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved in to our sailboat RAN, a one-off aluminium built Beason 40, and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started sailing south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds takes us. It was a day of extremes for the second half of the Helly Hansen Women’s Challenge on Sunday March 20. Large cloudbursts rolled down the harbour from the south every 15-20 minutes, leaving brief respites of unlikely sunshine and blue sky before the onset of the next downpour. In the cycles of rain and major changes in wind strength the crews of the yachts faced a whole spectrum of challenges on the day, ranging from deciding when to put a reef in, when to take one out and, most importantly, when to take off the wet weather gear and show off the carefully crafted fancy dress costumes! Dale Lorimer attempted to shelter her camera gear in the cloudbursts and shoot in the drier phases; here’s the action, the smiles and even some of the costumes that she shot. Oh, and look out for Little Nico’s show-stealing performance towards the end of the video!
