Solo climbing a sailboat mast is scary, especially for someone like me who suffers from acute acrophobia. We've officially started making progress South! So many things to learn along the way. It's amazing all of the little skills that need to be acquired in order to become competent and safe sailors - but we're chipping away a bit each day and becoming more and more capable as things progress. Beautiful sights. Sunrises, sunsets, and everything in between has become beautiful in it's own unique and individual way. So much life and energy out there on the water. Then we head south west, into the Thames estuary and then into the River Medway where right on cue the weather that was threatened starts to make itself felt. Morgan Lagravière, a young skipper with an already impressive track record, was chosen in early 2014 to fly Safran’s colors in the IMOCA Open 60 class, especially for the next Vendée Globe solo round-the-world race in 2016. He is one of the most promising skippers of his generation. Morgan Lagravière, born on Reunion Island in 1987, moved to France at 16 to attend a sports academy. He quickly won several world championships, along with the title of French junior champion. Based on these accomplishments, he was chosen in 2008 as a member of the French Olympic sailing team. Selected to represent the Vendée region in the Figaro Bénéteau category, Morgan became the French solo ocean racing champion as early as his second season. "Mr. Chuan was a professional mariner with a deep passion for sailing," said Capt. Robert Hendrickson, chief of response, Coast Guard 14th District. "Our thanks to our Navy partners who helped us search for this vessel in a timely manner so far from shore in an attempt to locate Mr. Chuan. Our deepest condolences go out not only to his family and friends but also to his racing team and the sailing community." Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules crews conducted six search patterns in the vicinity of the Quindao China and its charted course following notification of the situation Tuesday and into Wednesday. The USS Makin Island deployed an MH-60 Seahawk helicopter Wednesday once they were in range to attempt contact with Chuan. Their hails over the radio went unanswered and weather conditions prevented safe deployment of a rescue swimmer to the vessel. They followed up by deploying a rigid-hulled inflatable boat and crew to conduct a boarding of the trimaran Wednesday afternoon. The boatcrew confirmed Chuan was not on the vessel although his life jacket remains aboard. Exactly 3 weeks before the start of The Vendée Globe. The Vendée Globe is a sailing race around the world and nonstop singlehanded. Skipper sails around the world from west to east via the three major capes of Good Hope, Leeuwin and the Horn. There is a long slide down the Atlantic, the perilous voyage across the Southern Ocean with firstly the Indian Ocean and its crossed seas, then the Pacific Ocean, the world’s biggest ocean.
