Conditions couldn’t have been better for the start in Alicante, Spain on Sunday afternoon. The fleet of seven of the best sailing teams in the world started Leg 1, a 1,450 nautical mile sprint to Lisbon, Portugal in bright sunshine and a 15-20 knot Easterly breeze. Alicante, première étape de la Volvo Ocean Race 2017-2018. Dongfeng Race Team, skippé par le français Charles Caudrelier s’est rapidement positionné en tête ce dimanche, après une bataille serrée, avec les bateaux de MAPFRE et Team Brunel. Les trois 65 pieds étaient au touche à touche, à quelques mètres d’écart les uns des autres, mais Caudrelier bénéficiant de la priorité a poussé ses adversaires à la faute. Les conditions n’auraient pas pu être meilleures pour ce grand départ, aujourd’hui, avec 15 à 20 noeuds de vent d’Est, un ciel bleu et des dizaines de milliers de spectateurs ! La flotte des 7 Volvo Ocean 65, composée des meilleurs marins de la planète a franchi la ligne de départ à 14:00 heure locale, s’élançant ainsi sur cette première étape de 1450 milles nautiques jusqu’à Lisbonne. Les centaines de bateaux spectateurs rassemblés dans la baie formait un ‘stade’ dans lequel se sont affrontés les 7 équipages, enroulant quelques bouées avant de mettre le cap au Sud, vers Gibraltar, qu’ils devraient atteindre demain midi. Underway the destination turned to Lanzarote, Islas Canarias, which took us 19 days to complete. This first chapter brings you to liveaboard life, plastic challenges on board, sailing insights in rough and not-so raugh conditions and shows the beauty of our oceans and nature when allowed to happen and left to their own elements. Sailing vs Plastic is a 15 months journey on where we will sail on, at least, two different sailboats, from Netherlands to New Zealand, on a journey that aims to bring awareness about plastic pollution and carbon footprint. The NEW u-bolts we got back in Oregon took a hard beating and practically wore away the nuts! There wasn't a trailer repair shop in the area and we didn't want to back track an hour or so to find one, so we kept driving, hoping we would find one once we got to New Mexico. We were lucky to find one and the people there were extremely nice! They got to work on our trailer right away and had us back on the road in no time! The rest of the drive to the East Coast was pretty smooth sailing! We had to tie the fender on the trailer a couple of times because it kept falling off and the rope kept getting cut on the sharp edges. We finally decided to pull the fender off completely and save our tires from the beating they were getting. The road conditions in the southern states have been awful! We never imagined they would be so rough to drive on! We came across HUGE pot holes the size of frying pans countless times and ended up blowing out 3 tires and breaking 3 rims all together! The construction areas usually made for narrow lanes with no shoulder to rely on. This was difficult to maneuver through with our sloppy steering that never got fixed back in Utah. What shocked us the most was the fact that the semi truck drivers cut us off countless times! You would think they would know better than anyone to make sure to give the vehicle you are passing enough room before cutting back in front of the them, BUT NO! A lot of the times the trucks would try to pass us while still partially in our lane! We are lucky the side of our boat didn't get destroyed by the passing trucks! We decided that it would be best to drive to South Carolina to visit one of Randall's friends, so that we could leave a few of our valuable belongings with him while we are gone on our Bahamas trip. This made for a longer drive, but totally worth it, to see him and his family! The Southport 24 hour race is an endurance race / relay race which takes place over a weekend every September in Southport, England. The race has been going for over 50 years and is organised by West Lancs Yacht Club. We were helping out by organising a boat for Liverpool Yacht Club and our boat (Molly G) was used as an introduction to dinghy events for those members who had never participated in such an event before. There was another boat (Dicko) for the more serious racers and it placed about halfway in the final results. Hey! So Maria and I had the chance to fly the legendary open canopy Tiger Moth biplane from the 1930 in Fano, Italy. A biplane is a fixed-wing aircraft with two main wings stacked one above the other. The Tiger Moth was operated by the Royal Air Force (RAF) and many other operators as a primary trainer aircraft. Many nations have used the Tiger Moth in both military and civil applications, and it remains in widespread use as a recreational aircraft in several different countries. It is still occasionally used as a primary training aircraft, particularly for those pilots wanting to gain experience before moving on to other tailwheel aircraft. Cesare and Corrado wanted our help to do their adventure of their lifetime - to participate in the Vintage Air Rally, where only 15 vintage airplanes will be selected to be part of this life-changing crazy trip that begins from the world’s southernmost airport, Ushuaia, Argentina, and heading north to Florida, USA, journey’s end. After finding a way to safely access Wisteria Island we go explore. 75% of those who lived aboard near the island or even on the island were left with nothing after Hurricane Irma.This should give you a good idea of the destruction left in Irma's wake. We then meet a special couple who treated the Bums to a wonderful evening and share their inspirational story.
