In this episode we sail from Las Palmas at Gran Canaria to Mindelo at Cape Verde, in 6,5 days. We sail close to the African coast and we meet a lot of animals, including two types of whales. First there is some pilot whales and then we sail close to some huge whales. We think maybe is blue whales, but we’re not sure. Do you ever get afraid? In this episode I (Amy) get overwhelmed with fear after we tie up to a fishing dock. Why? When I saw how tight they had us in between two big boats I couldn't see how we could ever get out... because there was no one there to help us and we had to leave at 5 a.m. to avoid another difficult obstacle. And best of all, we had to leave in the dark under a moonless sky without any lights as the area was all marshes and coastal wilds. This video is a very real look at some of the challenges one can face in boating. Vin and I had two big challenges in one day...wondering how we could get off the dock (my fear) and having to voyage for two hours on a dark moonless pre-dawn run (his fear). Neringa with standard ballast of 350kg has a lively motion especially in gusty conditions and heels quickly requiring early reefing of sails. In this video I add a permanent ballast along the base of the keel case of 140kg to improve both motion at sea and self righting ability for open water sailing. Before permanently fixing the ballast sea trials with the weight in place showed reduced heeling, later reefing and generally a better motion of the boat in gusty conditions. The weight added was more than for the standard RL28's built to survey but less than the maximum added to some survey vessels. The ballast ratio on Neringa was increased from 26% up to 36% increasing seaworthiness for open water sailing. The 40 % ballast ratio quoted on the RL site was for the few boats built for open water conditions. Sailing performance has not been reduced by the ballast and on some days has increased performance with the ability to carry more sail for a given wind. Episode 9 We carry on gutting her out & removing any remaining wood and lining left. We start sanding the inside as well as the outside as we are going to remove the baby blue on the deck and change it.. to a color you'll just have to wait and see ;) Poor Ricky was covered in dust. My allergies got the best of me yet again. We also remove our toilet which was a mission on itself. We take a trip down to Jeffrey's Bay to Aerontec to get our supply of epoxy and a few other goodies so we can start with the interior. We grab a drink at our spot (since our boat is right next door) @ the algoa bay yacht club. We start cleaning up the hard so that we can get hauled out soon (if the weather would bear with us) I've been feeling pretty down and feeling super dizzy so Ricky decided why not cheer me up? Ricky's not a flower guy, so it was a nice change ;) We give you a glimpse of the layout we plan for Lady Africa and start disconnecting all our wires. We also stop by Sigma Coatings so get some paint so that we can start painting that baby blue top. We have some breakfast at our favorite place Spur and start mixing up our epoxy! Le mont Darwin, point culminant de le Terre de Feu, (2 429 m), qui surplombe ce glacier a été baptisé par le capitaine Fitz Roy en 1834 pour rendre hommage au pas encore célèbre naturaliste Charles Darwin qui l'accompagnait alors. Le Mont Darwin n'a été gravi qu'en 1961 et la chaine de Darwin explorée par des alpinistes français seulement en 2011. L'endroit serait il inhospitalier ?? Ce ne fut pas le cas pour nous ce jour là: ni vent, ni pluie. Seulement une panne de retour image du drone. Nous l'avons lancé sans écran de contrôle donc sans savoir ce qu'il filmait. Vu le résultat, on ne sert à rien. La prochaine fois on le laisse faire seul.
