Rebuilding a historic sailing yacht - Cutting and Fitting the Keel Scarph in a massive piece of hardwood timber Support; http://www.sampsonboat.co.uk/support-tally-ho Become a Patron; http://www.patreon.com/sampsonboatco ----- THIS episode, I cut and fit the big hook scarph in the Purpleheart for Tally Ho’s Keel timber. It’s a very dense hard wood, so it takes me some time, and lots of tool sharpening, to get the faces nice and clear, fitting well. Moving these timbers around is a real challenge because of their weight (the larger one is about 1.5 tons), but is possible with lots of levers, jacks and rollers, and is just the kind of work I enjoy. Episode 10 We finally get hauled out! Start pressure washing our hull and get down to sanding her down. We got check out Port Elizabeth's Food Truck Festival that happens every month at WERK. It was awesome. Great Vibe! Ricky goes hay on a few more wood objects on our boat and I try to see if i'm strong enough to climb onto the boat without having to use the ladder.. (I'm not strong enough by the way) haha. We run into a problem when we find out that our floor has delaminated! :( Which means we have to replace it. We go to the movies and I convinces Ricky to watch Pitch Perfect with me to get our minds off the darn floors! We go get some supplies so we can get started on putting her back together. It's been an emotional week for us. Building a boat isn't an easy job and requires alot of commitment. The longer we are out the more money it costs us, money we can use for sailing and exploring our beautiful world. This has been our dream for as long as we can remember and we will not let anything get in our way! PS: In connection to my Unites States Army shirt, my cousin is currently serving as a Dentist in the Army so when I went to go visit her in the States I brought myself some shirts cause I thought they were pretty cool & of course to show my support! Every Marina on Puerto Rico's East Coast!! In this week's episode of sailboat living with SailAway, we hop on that sailboat in the sky on an adventure to Puerto Rico! Our goal? To do a massive recon of the Eastern Coast to choose a home for ourselves and our beloved Layla so we can begin full time sailing the Caribbean. Little do we know that 2 weeks later Hurricane Maria would bring devastation to the island causing to change our long term plans. (only temporarily...we're going to spend some time sailing the Bahamas and South Florida for a year while Puerto Rico rebuilds). But what we don't know doesn't stop us from perusing multiple marinas and straight up falling in love with one. Puerto Rico will rebuild stronger than before and we've got our spot there all picked out! All part of sailboat living. Be sure to SUBSCRIBE for WEEKLY CONTENT! Cheers!! Episode 31 - We Hit A Reef! Wow! It's been a long time since I posted an episode. A lot has happened on Family Circus since our last episode. We've had many guests and crew over the last two months and have fallen way behind on creating episodes. We've had a challenging couple of months and were lucky to have a new crew member, Maria, join us in Fiji to sail off to Vanuatu, New Caledonia and then New Zealand. We arrived in New Zealand just in time for my mom to fly in and meet us for Christmas. Maria, my Mom and JD have all now departed the boat and Family Circus is back to four. Sayo and I are now loving the space. But before all of that...... we hit a reef!

The second half of our crossing goes much smoother than the first. We get some dreamy sailing conditions and hoist the spinnaker, allowing the boys to wade into ultimate chill mode as we drift across the Atlantic Ocean. The fish start jumping on board, the sun comes out to top up the tans and we pass the significant 1000nm mark, heading into 3 digits YAY! Best of all, to all of our relief and excitement the sea state calms enough for us to jump off the back and tail L’Attitude Adjustment as she cruises through 4000m deep waters. In this video, as the sun rises we are well on our way south! We make 7 knots down the Isle of Palms ICW and pull over and anchor to 'park' awhile while we wait for the Ben Sawyer Swing Bridge to open....but the Mantus Anchor swivel gets lodged/jammed in the bow roller...and Amy gets alarmed as we unlodge it with a screw driver and safely make our passage thru the bridge- Across beautiful Charleston Bay and into the notorious Elliot Cut...just at 'slack tide'! NO current- no crashing--no problem! We continue down the Stono River to our end-of-the day anchorage in Wadmallow Sound, SC. We set up our generator for heat and we raise a homemade anchor light to comply with Coast Guard safety regulations... watch and see what happens! In this vlog, I'll construct a brand new water tank lid for our Endeavour 32 sailboat. The old was tragically destroyed, by me, with a saw, while gaining access to the interior of the water tank. The old lid was rotten anyways, so it's not really as tragic as it sounds. It's my intent is for this new lid to be MUCH better than the original one. It will not only be stronger, but it will also be completely sealed from water intrusion so that rot will never be an issue again. By the way, I know it's hard to tell in the video, but this project took me nearly a full week of work to complete. Wow! I thought I'd be done with this lid in a couple days... nope. Silly me. Boat projects just don't work like that, and when you forget that fact, the boat will remind you how it really works. Thanks for watching!! In Episode 2 of BoatTechTV we look at the Fixed Pitch Propeller. I the first episode we covered some of the basic definitions of the propeller and now we take that further explaining how the propeller actually generates lift. Using a simple example we discover that using the Bernoulli equation you can relate velocity and pressure which in turn can begin to explain how lift on an airfoil is generated. The episode closes by highlighting the similarities between aircraft wings, ships hulls and propellers, all of which rely on lift to work.

After preparing my Beneteau yacht 'Ocean Gem' for our first ever Rolex Sydney Hobart Race, I decided to interview our crew 4 weeks after we completed the race and gather their thoughts on the project and their experience. It started in September 2017 when we assembled a crew of 10 and a prepared a long project list that grew to more than 200 items. In early December we departed the Gold Coast in Queensland for Sydney via Lord Howe Island (300nm off Australia's east coast). The 800nm delivery journey qualified our crew and yacht for the 630nm race of a lifetime. This is a great episode for those thinking of pushing their local club racing and blue water sailing to the next level. It demonstrates that with good preparation, anything is possible. Gone with the Wind gets a nose job. We replace our old sailboat windows with original Fuller Brush Co. portlights. Jessie begins organizing the boat, starting with the clothes. Video uploads will now be every other Thursday. We are working really hard to finish up Gone with the Wind and want to prioritize getting her ready to sail. We will continue to document our journey and hope to return to weekly videos shortly. Thanks for understanding! We are Shawn, Jessie, Mojo and Voodoo. We started our Youtube channel, Big Easy Sailing, to document our journey on our 1972 Gulfstar 36 sailboat. We've been together for 20 years and moved everywhere from our hometown of New Orleans to Alaska to Denver. Now our home will travel with us as we travel across beautiful blue waters. It would not have been the same without you. — Hey, my name is Nike and I bought an aluminum 37 foot sailboat in Panama in 2013 that I named KARL. I spent a good year refitting it, mostly by myself and with the help of awesome friends, and then (mostly) solo sailed my sailboat around the western Caribbean. In 2016, I crossed the Panama Canal, had a major engine break down, a near sinking experience and a serious foot injury which got me stuck along the Pacific coast of Central and South America. In this Episode, my friends Joel and Sheddy from SV Chuffed do voluntary veterinary work from their boat. Mostly they spay stray dogs and cats but this time they rescued a turtle that was tangled up in some fishing line and needed surgery. Wanna see how a veterinary clinic on a sailboat works? Then check out this week's episode! Of course there are some pretty beaches to see as well... Ahoy and enjoy, Nike & Karl Find out more about The Sailing Vet Sheddy and her adventures on her YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/c/VetTails Thanks for watching! Enjoy & Ahoy, Nike & Karl

Fair warning here- this episode contains scenes of our toilet basically exploding. There is poop flying all over the place. And a bit of cursing... If you are really sensative about this sort of thing consider yourself warned! It's a true Sailor’s NIGHTMARE! Our toilet stops flushing and during the troubleshooting process we end up with about 20 liters of PURE FECES straight into our head :( Of course Capt. Breeyawn is on the case to sort it out. I’ve never seen anything like it! Hope you find it as amusing as we did, re-watching this disaster..hehe. Much Love! Finally we have some wind so we can sail! Next stop in Guna Yala is Mamaraga (Snug Harbor) where we meet Arquín and he shows us his wife’s pretty Molas. Then we make it to the gulf of Guna Yala and the island Narganá where we finally find internet. We check out Devil’s river next to the island and explore the Panamanian jungle. This is the guide book we use: http://amzn.to/2HvilA9 We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built aluminium Beason 40, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us. WANT MORE? In this episode, I hangout with fellow Youtube sailors from Ran Sailing and Sailing Uma, encounter the worst storm at anchor, nearly kill a dog, visit a pirates nest and Alsino's leg falls off. Many thanks to Ran sailing for the drone footage. Thank you for watching this episode, please give us a thumbs up and subscribe. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. Tonga is one of the few places in the world where you are actually allowed to swim with whales. Although we had seen many Humpbacks surface close to our boatwhile sailing, it proved impossible for one of us to jump in while the other handled the boat. Either the wave conditions were too rough or we were too far offshore. So we booked a whale tour in the Ha'apai island group of Tonga and Wow! What an experience. The operators knew where to find them. Knew when they could approach safely and a guide showed us how to swim out to them (since the boat can only get so close). We ended up jumping in several times and swimming out to them. One such encounter ended with a mom and a calf frolicking the the warm, shallow waters of Tonga. This is an experience we will never forget! Want the chance to come aboard and see patron-only footage? So we tried to leave Fiji and hit a reef. I've been feeling feeling sad, angry, embarrassed, relieved no one got hurt and frustrated with myself for forgetting the #1 rule of seamanship. Always keep a good lookout! The boat is currently on the hard getting fixed and I have been commuting to her to supervise the repairs from an apartment we rented up the street. What I found strange about this accident is the feeling that I have to rush to get the boat fixed and get us going again. In reality there is literally no reason to rush. We have no schedule to keep, no place to be, yet the feeling of urgency is there. "something bad happened, let's fix it FAST". I'm learning this feeling is not real and perhaps even more important than the #1 rule of seamanship is the the principal of constantly slowing down. And when I think I'm going slow, slow down even further. No matter what you're experiencing there is no rush. It is by slowing down, feeling and connecting that we bring meaning to our experience. It felt great to spend some time looking back over these last couple months of videos. I'm grateful for the great times we've had in Fiji and the incredible experiences we've created. I hope you enjoy this one.
