Ich danke euch für eure Unterstützung! ❤️ https://www.patreon.com/marietim 🍺 https://paypal.me/marietimde 👕 http://www.marietim.ch/shop/ #sailing #pacific #blind Please like Craig’s video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vf12aDJv9Ww *** Deutsch: bitte runter scrollen *** On my channel, I usually post videos of my own sailing adventures. This video is different: blind captain and liveaboard Craig Faris is the focus of this episode! Craig and I met each other on Instagram. I was immediately in total awe of his sailing project. Craig was born blind. He lives on his 31 ft sailboat in North Vancouver and wants to sail across the Pacific to New Zealand. For that, he has entered the Holman Prize competition – a competition where blind people submit their projects via a pitch video on YouTube and the ones with the most thumbs-up get to the final. If Craig wins, he’ll be able to finance the special equipment (e.g. talking compass, talking radar) needed for his big trip. In order to spread the word of his big adventure, I asked Craig if he wanted to do a sort of interview on my channel. He said yes, and that’s how this video came about. I wanted to know all about why he likes to sail, how he goes about his daily routine on his boat, and whether he ever gets sea sick. Having been a liveaboard and ocean crosser myself I know that sailing can be hard, tiring and challenging at times. That is why I admire Craig even more! My granddad was blind, having lost his eyesight in an accident, after which his life needed a lot of adjusting. In publishing this video, I want to raise awareness that you can follow your dreams even with a disability. We should all be a little more like Craig, just going out there and following our dreams! Please like Craig’s pitch video for the Holeman Prize. That way, we can see him set sail to New Zealand. Thank you, Marie.

Oh crumbs. A week we will remember for the rest of our days. We take a day sail from St Kitts to Saba. A rock in the Caribbean Sea, rising to great heights, with two small towns nestled in the clouds. No shelter or bays to speak of here and the Northerly swell and strong breeze was enough for us to abandon ship. I know, we can't believe we did it either. What we found on land was a sight to behold. Where the jungle meets the sea; we've never been to any place quite like Saba. This island is home to dense fauna and abundant wildlife, and many of its species are exclusive to Saba. Jackson dropped a piece of bread overboard, and out of nowhere, a shoal of Jacks, a shark and a barracuda swooped into view. So that indicated it would be worth going for a freedive. Yes, yes it was. We conquered the 500 miles from Antigua to Bonaire in a little over 3 days, despite some crazy squalls it was a lovely downwind sleigh ride and it was a treat to arrive to a new culture in the Dutch Antillean island of Bonaire. Bonaire is known as one of the top spots in the world for diving and now we know why! Literally the whole island is a massive reef and marine park with hundreds of diving and snorkeling spots - you can see why all the number plates on the cars say 'Divers Paradise' and every second person has dive tanks in the back seat! So what better place for our 12 year old son David to have his first independent dive! We also enjoyed exploring the rest of the island with its wild side - donkeys wander the streets, cactus juice is the local liquor, salt pans and slave huts, flamingo lagoons and lots of fabulous restaurants! We are the Robbins family sailing on our boat named Nikau. We are a family of 5. Our 3 kids are doing NZ correspondence school on board. They are growing to love it! What's not to love about 3 hours of school a day and then a different playground for the afternoon every day! We've traveled from New Zealand to Sardinia in Italy to pick up our boat and we plan over a few seasons to sail her back to New Zealand. We hope you enjoy following us on our adventures! We would love to hear from you. Especially if you are interested in doing something crazy like we are! Maybe we can help answer some questions you have? Thanks and enjoy.

We hope by sharing this adventure you will find some inspiration in your life. If doesn’t have to be sailing. It can be anything at all. Just take a few minutes every day for yourself, breathe deep and relax, and don’t forget to SMILE big time! Vida is the third in the successful 55m FDHF Steel class, which features muscular exterior lines by Frank Laupman of Omega Architects. The profile is clean thanks to the absence of fashion plates and the design is characterised by floor-to-ceiling windows that allow for plenty of natural light to flood the interiors.

Catamaran Sailing Voyage from Dry Tortugas, FL - Cuba - Cayman 0:00 introduction 5:05 Blue Marlin Catch at 5:05 7:28 Dolphin Fish School 8:33 Jolly Roger Parasail flies again 16:13 New year's on our sailboat 18:41 Message in a bottle out to sea 22:05 Tarpons in Grand Cayman 22:17 Birthday snorkeling off our sailboat TRIP DETAILS We left Dry Tortugas around 9 AM and began our sail southwest to round the western tip of Cuba. Heavy seas for most of the day at 5-7 ft, avg speed 7 knots. Most difficult part was crossing the gulf stream at 24 degrees latitude. Heavy current slowed us down. Fished all day, lost a teaser Stephen had for 30 years, lost a big catch (not sure what) – enough to catch a blue marlin around 6 pm ! We fought the fish for 1 hr 15 minutes, and finally caught sight of him gleaming in the water. Bill and Stephen brought him up enough to get a good picture, down on the sugar scoop. Who says you can’t catch deep sea fish on a sailing catamaran? Caught and released. Estimated 400 pounds. Friday night winds slowed down, so Stephen adjusted course and had to tack in order to keep those engines off. We still averaged 7 knots so we were grateful for our captain’s skills in trimming those sails. Sailed all night. December 29, Saturday Crossed the Gulf Stream at 24 degrees latitude. Sailed all day, very slow 4.5 knots. Took the opportunity to fly the Jolly Roger Parasail while the Cuban dolphins escorted the Pilar. Finally started those engines late afternoon. Early evening winds picked up all of a sudden, and flew around the corner of Cuba, Cabo San Antonio about 9 PM. Continued to Fat Maria, fast – 8 knots. Then, once around Fat Maria the conditions changed. December 30, Sunday Past Fat Maria, we encountered the trifecta of 25 knot headwinds, strong heading currents, and 12 ft sea swells with 6-10 ft wind waves. We barely could make 2 knots with engines. We pressed on for the morning, thinking that it had to improve. But it did not. We suffered 1. One soaked mattress – caused by seaweed lodged in the top hatch which made for an inadequate seal. 2. A broken shackle on the main sheet on the back of the boom – we were warned by a strange popping noise we could not place, but finally the shackle broke loose when sail was down. What a blessing it did not break when under heavy winds at full sail. 3. An identified foam can lodged inside the ceiling shaken loose and rolling around all night at anchor. Amazingly, the area was accessible only from a 1 inch crevice, which we then stuffed with rags hoping it would cushion the can from rolling around. That can was obviously left in there during manufacturing. So, we started tacking back and forth to get in the lee of land, but even close to shore, we saw 12 foot waves crashing on the cliffs of southern Cuba. We could make no headway, staying 12 miles offshore as recommended by USCG. With no other options, and nightfall coming soon, we headed for the bay on the other side of the escarpment (sea wall). We did not know for sure if it would be better, but we all hoped and prayed that it would. We even had to tack a couple of times to get in there. We finally found a spot to anchor at Cobo Francis at 10 PM. So grateful to be out of those heavy seas. We all slept much better, anticipating a planned daybreak departure. December 31, Monday Thankfully, Monday’s voyage was the most pleasurable day we have had yet on this trip.... Read the rest online at http://bluedotvoyages.com/sailing-from-florida-to-grand-cayman
