We complete our clearances and toast our safe passage with our customary bottle of bubbles. We require a cruising permit to move freely round the islands, and Pretti in the office is on hand to sort this out for us. We visit the well stocked markets to replenish our fruit and veggie supplies and have our first taste of what will be many bowls of kava, at the Women’s craft fair. Those ladies mix a mean bowl….. We attend a talk by the legendary Curly Carswell , a local sailor who knows the reefs and and anchorages of Fiji like the back of his hand. He passes on his knowledge and waypoints for a nominal fee that is worth every cent. Our cruising permits arrive back from Suva and once they are stamped by customs we are free to set sail and enjoy some of the more remote parts of this beautiful country. We finally arrive in Noumea, New Caledonia after many prolonged attempts. We check in and check out the place and then leave the marina and head towards the Baie Iré on the island of Ile Ouen and a lovely quiet anchorage for the night. In the last episode before we leave the European mainland we sail to Ferragudo and Alvor in the Portuguese Algarve. From here we will make a first 500 miles crossing to Madeira somewhere next week.

With only 1.5 days in Kaohsiung, it was an action packed itinerary to see as much as I could. My favorites were the Formosa Train Station, Pier 2 Art Center, Lotus Pond with the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, Gashun Temple, Confucius Temple, and Autumn and Spring Pagodas. This city is overlooked because of Taipei, but it's well worth a visit and gives easy access to the southern tip and the Kenting National Park. Der Kindersitz fürs Fahrrad von Mac Ride ist ein sehr geniales Produkt. Endlich könnt ihr mit den Kleinen die Trail gemeinsam befahren. Process improvement in production is virtually a religion for the team at Fulcrum Speedworks, the makers of the sailing hydrofoil known as the UFO. Manufacturing can be a very dirty business if you let it. One of the biggest benefits of process improvement is defeating waste and trash with each enhancement. As manufacturers, Fulcrum Speedworks is on the front line of the battle to keep our planet clean, and how they behave has enormous consequences. This is one of many reasons they take pride in managing the production process under their own roof. Their goal is to let everyone who can sail on our oceans, fly on our oceans. One has a Gunmetal grey paint finish and is exhibited in the water; the other, with custom Sahara sand livery, is on land. “These sales confirm the vision of Ferretti Group in acquiring one of the world’s most renowned and innovative yacht brands,” says Stefano de Vivo, CCO of Ferretti Group and Managing Director of Wally. “In terms of research and development, engineering and production, Ferretti Group is in a position to develop Wally’s unique potential even further.” The original Wallytender concept opened a new market as a standalone runabout, ideal for day or overnight cruising and not just as a tender for a larger yacht or private villa. The new model retains the stylish solutions that define the Wally philosophy of combining form and function, but introduces innovative new features to enhance the yachting experience. “Ever since we entered the power market in 2001, the Wallytenderhas been a symbol of the pure joy of open-air boating,” says Luca Bassani, Wally founder. “The new 48 Wallytender is proof positive that our very special design DNA continues to thrive under Ferretti ownership.” The 48 Wallytender has generous interior volumes with an elegant suite combining the sailing heritage of teak decking with panels and fittings in carbon fibre, a material introduced to the yachting world by Wally in 1991. A relevant feature is also the retractable passarelle that doubles as a swim ladder, included as standard too. On deck, the layout has been designed to let family and friends relax in convivial comfort with generous seating and sunbeds, and alfresco dining thanks to the well-equipped galley unit. To fully enjoy the on-the-water experience both at anchor and underway, the aft seating can be configured to face either forward or the dining table. A special anchoring system is hidden behind a flush-fitting hatch in the bow and can be operated at the touch of a button from the helm station. The wraparound fender is a trademark feature of Wallytenders and provides a practical docking solution instead of bulky fenders. The standard propulsion package comprises the twin Volvo IPS 650 engines (totaling 960hp) for a top speed of 38 knots and is equipped with user-friendly joystick controls for easy docking. An entertaining video of a family sail (2001) across the South Atlantic in a new Atlantic 42 catamaran built in Cape Town. The owner, Sib Reppert, was an experienced offshore sailor, competition rower, ex US Navy and a IP lawyer. Sadly Sib passed away after a brief illness in 2013. You will notice that when the boat starts sailing fast there is a very loud humming noise reverberating through the boat. This was due to a small, 4" wide, swim step on the trailing edge of the rudder that did not have the edge beveled as directed in the construction plans. A square trailing edge starts a resonant vibration that can get very loud. Simply beveling the trailing edge with a file stops it completely. An easily corrected "new boat" bug. Three parts, enjoy.

I fell in love with Meti Island and its people during my visit, so much so that I extended my stay by a week. Such an innocent way of life there, smiling kids, laughing adults. Working hard each day but always together. This is the reason I brought my boat and started on this adventure, to see that there are still communities out there like this. Each day I spent walking around the island I was more accepted. The fact that I was taking pictures and then bringing back prints the next day showed them that I happy to give something back and the opened up a lot, to the point where a very old man stepped out into my path and asked me to take his and his wife picture. They had such big smiles and it just made my day. It was a very sad day when I had to leave and I will go back sometime. Southport NC is a small coastal town with a big heart. We recently sailed to Southport and stayed at the South Harbor Village Marina for a couple months.
