We continue to try and sail to Australia but the weather is definitely against us. After 6 days at sea we have no choice but to motor the last three to four days to make it to Australia. We’ve sailed over 10,000 nm, but as we enter the channel into Australia our engine decides to die! We have tide against us and its pitch black outside, with a moonless night! This time Hal and Margaret arrive in Tahiti's capital, Papeete for a nostalgic visit before flying on to the leeward island of Raiatea to start their charter at the Moorings. Aboard a 42 footer, they head out into the tradewinds for a short sail to the nearby island of Tahaa. Next it's on to the islands of Huahine and finally Bora Bora. During the video we flash back to scenes from their 1960s film as the Roths reminisce about their past Tahitian adventures and the "modern" state of the islands. They honed their sailing skills from seasoned voyagers who had sailed before them. And they past on their knowledge about excitement about cruising to new generations of bluewater sailors. Hal died in 1981. Margaret survived him for many years, passing away in 2019. I had the privilege of meeting her at a Seven Seas Cruising Club GAM in Annapolis several years ago. She was still full of spirit and inspiration about sailing. SailFlix is attempting to get rights to distribute their film, Whisperer's Pacific Voyage, shot in 16mm. I highly recommend reading The Hal Roth Seafaring Trilogy, which includes three of Hal's most powerful books: Two on a Big Ocean, Two Against Cape Horn, and the Longest Race. BLUEWATER CRUISING PIONEERS Hal and Margaret Roth are bluewater cruising pioneers. In cruising history, they are in company with Eric and Susan Hiscock, and Lin and Larry Pardey. Following World War II, these daring cruising couples ventured out on the world's oceans aboard small sailing vessels on limited budgets. All three wrote numerous sailing articles and books, and produced their own films about their voyages. Their legacy continues to inspire countless sailors who heed the call to explore new cultures and distant lands - and to learn more about themselves on the ocean blue.

How have you dealt wtih big wild dreams that you feel like you did NOT attain? I would love to get your feedback below on how you dealt with that? What was the vision or goal that you didn't reach, and how did you not let it get you down? I think we all face these things at times, and how we handle them may be the difference between happiness and not. This week we answer the questions we have received about why we are not sailing. Over the last few weeks now, there has been a thread of questions about the fact that the sailboat has not been in the videos, we are not out on the water or doing work on the boat. What's up with that is the common question. There are a lot of reasons, call them excuses if you will, but we are happy where we are in life and are looking to adapt our dreams slightly to make them attainable for a more extended period. I wish we were more like Delos, Uma, The Wynns, Atticus, and the many other channels I turn to for continued fuel for my fire (or dreams), but we are different. We have managed to find a way to make cruising or living aboard or having a boat work for our family and us. We head into Slovakia and tackle some pretty big winding mountain passes before heading into Austria to Vienna. We put in a turn back west and drive back across Austria into the Bavarian Mountains in Southern Germany. We’ve pulled the kids from school and are home schooling while on the road and the water. We spend time aboard our 34ft sailing boat in NZ and have bought a motorhome in Europe so as to tour the other side of the world. We’re keeping our memories on video here and the kids write narration and play guitars so we have music to use in the videos.

We sail peacfully through the night and suddenly the boat stops! The rudder and prop got caught in a massive floating fishing net that extends for miles and was not lit. My sailboat Karl is hanging in the net whilst a 2 knot current is pushing the boat into the lines of the net. The wind is coming from the stern, unfortunately, so we need to take the main sail down with a good breeze in it. Not an easy task... First we try to free the net with a stick, but it is too far down and too big, so there is nothing left to do but dive into the deep, dark and skary water. Fortunately, the phosphorescense light up the net, so I can see where I have to cut. A line is wapped around my waste so I won't float away...still, it's a bit of a scary task...if I cut the net and get caught in it by accident, there will be a massive pull in the moment it floats away. Plus, I don't wanna know who else is down there with me in this dark body of water. Apart from that, we had an awesome sail from Jaramijo to Isla Plata, also called Poor Man's Galapagos.
