Minerva reef is an incredible parcel of paradise conveniently located 250 miles south of Tonga, making it a great anchorage to break up a yacht's passage from Tonga to NZ. There's no shelter as such, just a ring of reef with white sand and coral inside, luckily we had a few days of perfect calm weather to make the most of our stop in Minerva. These were idyllic days, snorkeling, spear fishing and hunting for crayfish. A most enjoyable few days rest and a seafood feast! We were not alone, there were 12 other boats in the anchorage, which shows just how popular this route is for yachts at this time of year, we also had the New Zealand Air Force One Orion fly over and request the names of all the boats and whether we had submitted our pre-arrival form to NZ customs! Efficient work by our home country! We are the Robbins family sailing on our boat named Nikau. We are a family of 5. Our 3 kids are doing NZ correspondence school on board. They are growing to love it! What's not to love about 3 hours of school a day and then a different playground for the afternoon every day! We've traveled from New Zealand to Sardinia in Italy to pick up our boat and we plan over a few seasons to sail her back to New Zealand. We hope you enjoy following us on our adventures! In the first days of October I went to the most southern tip of Mozambique to explore the underwaterworld of Ponta do Ouro. Just one kilometer away from the South African border you can explore divesites full of fish and large megafauna (Bull Sharks, Tiger Sharks, Silver Tip Sharks, Manta Rays and many more). But I also encountered bad visibility and a water temperature of about 19-20 degrees which is quite unusual for this time of the year. Maybe the best part about the months September and October, is the constant sighting of humpback whales from shore or from the zodiac (speedboat).
