Our family sailing adventure continues with the Sailing Kids on day 5 of the summer holiday trip. Blake shows you how to tie a knot, two ways to tie a bowline knot (the best knot for kids), the slower and stronger way or the fast way he used in the Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ) bowline competition on facebook. This was another way to keep us busy during the New Zealand coronavirus lockdown (Covid-19 lockdown level 4 in NZ is where we need to stay within a short distance from home, no sailing and just essential visits to the grocery store). On day 5 of our summer holiday, we go to the first bay to port as you enter Te Kouma harbour, the bay has no name and is on the Coromandel. The boys walk up the hill to get some great views of the ocean, in doing so we dodge plenty of cow poo, fly a mavic mini drone to get some incredible drone footage of the surrounding area. After going back down the hill, Toby tries to walk across a log that was rather high off the ground. He got half way and did a big leap back to safety. We then find Oystercatchers on the beach, they are a native New Zealand bird and like to hang out with one other mate, they are normally found on sandy beaches all around NZ as this is where they lay their eggs. We are two brothers, aged 4 and 7, who love going on sailing family adventures - exploring the outdoors and finding super cool wild animals, bugs and marine life. So along with our parents, we’re sailing the world, exploring islands, and looking for interesting wildlife. We start our adventure sailing New Zealand but dream of sailing around the Mediterranean some day. We love our planet and want to look after our environment, so through our travels we hope other kids will feel inspired to care for our planet and wildlife too. Interested in how our Hydro-Generator works? Well this is the video for you! We were pretty lucky that our Amel Sharki came from the factory with a built-in alternator on the propeller shaft. The idea being when the boat is sailing rather quickly near hull speed (6-8kts) the big three blade propeller can be put to some use! We have seen a steady 15-20 amps input at 12v, or around 200 watts of juice. The last upgrade to the system was wiring our Victron Energy BMV-712 smart battery monitor to control our Renogy DC-DC charger. We use this device to charge our smart Battleborn lithium ion battery bank from our 'dumb' lead acid starter battery. For the pivoting, tilting door, it all started from the idea of combining the saloon table with the cockpit table. By blending these two functions, it made it possible to profoundly change the organization of the nacelle’s layout. All that was missing was a solution to close off the rear of the boat, always with the concern for innovation and above all functionality in mind! It was while observing his garage door that one of the architects came up with the idea of a sliding window. A door that is there to protect you from the elements while being waterproof and strong, but which can also disappear when the weather is good. This revolutionary door has shaken up the world of boating, as it has made it possible to create a saloon / aft cockpit space which is completely free of bulkheads!… Today this represents one of the cornerstones of the BALI CATAMARANS concept and none of our models are designed without it. Improvements over the years The geometry, as well as the design of the door itself, hasn’t altered, but the mechanism has evolved considerably because we’ve been able to take into account the ideas and feedback of BALI CATAMARANS customers and architects. From a system of electric rams and connecting rods to tilt the door, we have switched to a system of cylinders powered by a hydraulic unit. This is a very powerful and efficient system and in the event of a failure, an emergency valve still allows the door to be lowered. The manual version uses gas struts. Safe… and watertight It’s important to note that the overall architecture of this pivoting and tilting door is based on a significant redundancy of the functions that make up its lifting system in order to guarantee the absolute safety of the user at all times. The rams are doubled-up and equipped with fall-arrest valves. The traction cables are also doubled-up for each of the rams. A customized sealing system has been developed for each model for the lower part of the doors, allowing a watertight seal in the saloon. On the peripheral part of the pivoting and tilting door, a brush system is installed to create a windproof barrier. These two systems give the door incredible watertightness. This innovation complies with the CE standards for watertightness;

Travel back to the late 1980s and Join David and Judy Lloyd, and their two small children on a two week catamaran cruise of the Leeward Islands visiting Antigua, Guadeloupe, Gozier, and Les Saintes. The Lloyds embark on their charter on the British island of Antigua, famous in modern times for Antigua Race Week and in history, as a major British Naval port in the time of Lord Nelson. They board their 39 foot cat at Nelson's Dockyard. Before departing they tour the the historic island. Next, they castoff for the French island of Guadeloupe where they check in at Port Louie. After a night at anchor the Lloyds navigate the Salee river that divides Guadeloupe into two halves. Stopping at Pointe A Pitre, the island's largest city, they find carnival time is underway. The next day they sail the short protected passage to the island of Gozier, a classic Caribbean stop with white sand beaches surrounded by coral reefs. Then they sail to their final destination, the small islands of Les Saintes, part of the Guadalupe provence. These unspoiled islands combine the sophistication of France with warm Caribbean breezes. One of the toughest place to sail is Cape Verde. Strong winds, current and nasty waves makes it very challenging for sailors. And this is no exception for me. We start off in perfect conditions. Sail through the night with almost no wind and wake top to dolphins. Then it gets interesting. We're going almost directly into the wind to keep our bearing north. Then conditions get harder and harder. And then it's just crazy. In the end.
