We fly the drone and catch it on the boat, kayak over to a small island group called the three sisters and Blake & Toby get really scared from crabs chasing them! Our family sailing adventure this week was at Oneroa on Waiheke Island and then Motuihe Island with friends. Oneroa is one of our favourite places to visit, Blake and Toby swing off the side of the boat using the spinnaker halyard, go to shore, see the rock caves, crabs and everyone gets a little scared when dad pretends to pull out a big crab. We then motor over to Motuihe Island, we take some beautiful drone shots of the Island, find a few bird feathers before heading back to the marina. We also hope you like our new Sea Shepherd gear. Our family sailing adventure this week was at Kennedy Point on Waiheke Island with friends, followed by coronavirus / COVID-19 lockdown activities. Blake starts by talking about the boat safety briefing we give friends before going out sailing to Kennedy Point. When we get to the bay, Blake shows you how he jumps off the kayak and how quickly he can paddle around on the kayak. He shows his friend how to climb a cliff face while Toby watches from the top of the cliff. Following our lovely time with our friends before the coronavirus lockdown Blake and Toby show you one of the lockdown activities they have been doing during lockdown. The activity is to build a wooden seaplane, they do this by first making a plan, followed by a LEGO model seaplane and then cutting and drilling wood to make the seaplane. We weren't sure if it would float and it didn't float in the bath. It was a fun lockdown activity though. Our family sailing adventure this week was to an deserted island, North of Ponui Island in Ruthe Passage, Hauraki Gulf, Auckland. Ruthe passage is known for Kingfish, Snapper and Kina. On this weekend trip we found large crabs and a star fish in a rock pool, we called them our pets. Lucky the crabs didn't nip us! We asked dad to take the GoPro underwater and try and see if he could swim with fish. He did find a few reef fish and plenty of kelp but the water was a bit murky after a recent storm passing through. At the end, we show you Blake's remote control sailing boat (RC boat) that he purchased after saving for over a year to get. It is a Dragonforce 65, and he has named it Thunder. We take it sailing around local lakes when we are not out sailing on Opal. Our family sailing adventure this week was sailing to Home Bay, Motutapo Island in the Hauraki Gulf, Auckland. On this voyage we had some friends come with us for a sleepover, we show you our favourite beach, mostly because of the crabs, fresh water pond, ice cream (the shop is open every second weekend), walking tracks, native birds and the fun kayaking we normally have. At 178 million years old pest-free Motutapu is one of the oldest land masses in the Hauraki Gulf. The island has lived an exciting life - it was intensively settled by Maori, it hosted massive Victorian picnic parties, and was a base during WWll. We show you the wharf / jetty where the navy ships would dock on the island. Blake also shows you what not to do with a GoPro camera. He runs down the beach and smashes it in the water, while it did hit the rocks it didn't crack the lens and the GoPro Hero 8 camera survived. At the end, we show you video and photos of when we first purchased the boat, in a future episode we will provide recommendations on a family boat to buy. On our first trip out, we saw KS-2, Sir Peter Blake won the Ocean Race (Whitbread round the world race) with this boat. Blake was named after Sir Peter Blake. Our family sailing adventure continues with the Sailing Kids on day 7 of the summer holiday trip. Blake finds a kina, otherwise known as a sea urchin endemic in New Zealand and a traditional component of Maori diet. We then sail from Te Kouma to Man O' War bay, while the adults enjoyed the Man O War winery restaurant the kids were playing on the sandy beach where the tide had exposed an old mooring anchor, in the so called aquarium, the kids play with a quick hermit crab and small fish. This was our last day of the summer break, it was a fantastic sailing trip where we had five sightings of dolphins and three sharks. Great to see the wildlife, next time we will get more of it on camera! Still learning to remember to pull out the GoPro Hero 8 and Mavic Mini Drone! Our family sailing adventure continues with the Sailing Kids on day 5 of the summer holiday trip. Blake shows you how to tie a knot, two ways to tie a bowline knot (the best knot for kids), the slower and stronger way or the fast way he used in the Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ) bowline competition on facebook. This was another way to keep us busy during the New Zealand coronavirus lockdown (Covid-19 lockdown level 4 in NZ is where we need to stay within a short distance from home, no sailing and just essential visits to the grocery store). On day 5 of our summer holiday, we go to the first bay to port as you enter Te Kouma harbour, the bay has no name and is on the Coromandel. The boys walk up the hill to get some great views of the ocean, in doing so we dodge plenty of cow poo, fly a mavic mini drone to get some incredible drone footage of the surrounding area. After going back down the hill, Toby tries to walk across a log that was rather high off the ground. He got half way and did a big leap back to safety. We then find Oystercatchers on the beach, they are a native New Zealand bird and like to hang out with one other mate, they are normally found on sandy beaches all around NZ as this is where they lay their eggs. Our family sailing adventure continues with the Sailing Kids on day 3 of the summer holiday trip, as the Covid-19 / Coronavirus pandemic is well underway, Blake also discusses his thoughts on the current situation, including what our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern told us to do. After sailing from Kawau Island to Waiheke, Blake and Toby sailing anchor at Man O' War bay on Waiheke Island. Unfortunately they leave their cousins, but have a lot of fun at the Man O' War winery, playing games and then having an epic beach run. Toby lost the first run, his dad should had realised that winning the race possibly wasn't the best idea? Toby cried at the end of the race, so we followed up with a second beach run and Toby won the race. That night we realised dad had lost his wallet at the winery, so we went back to shore the next day on the dinghy / tender and luckily got it back thanks to the nice staff on the day. We then finish by continuing on our summer holiday sailing trip to the Coromandel. See you next time! Blake and Toby start our sailing family holiday at Kawau Island. We sailed around the back of Kawau Island and Anna (Blake and Toby's mum) got to swim with 5 dolphins, they started to jump around and that was when Anna noticed a large hammerhead shark. After she saw the hammerhead shark she quickly swam back to the boat and then went out for a kayak with Blake. They didn't see the dolphins again, which is a real shame because we didn't get close up or under water video of the dolphins. Blake and Toby then met up with their cousins who also have a Davidson 28 foot yacht. We meet up with them a lot and play on the shore, find flowers and wildlife. This time the boys went looking for Weka (a New Zealand native bird). Weka eat bugs and plants and are the size of a chicken. This particular Weka bird was very curious and the boys had a lot of fun watching the flightless bird. We then finish by continuing on our summer holiday sailing trip to Waiheke Island, before we head over to the Coromandel. Blake and Toby go searching for native New Zealand birds on Tiritiri Matangi Island (Tiri) and find a fernbird, whitehead, hihi (stitchbird) and a kereru (wood pigeon). Tiritiri Island is located in the Hauraki Gulf, Auckland New Zealand and was once a farm. Over the past 30 years volunteers and Doc have planted thousands of trees, eradicated the pests and developed a nature reserve where approximately 100 different types of birds are thriving, including approximately 10 different types of NZ native birds. Blake and Toby also walk up to the lighthouse, it was once considered to be the brightest in the world. After visiting Tiritiri Matangi Island, Blake learns to surf on his new surfboard for his 7th birthday. He has a couple of big slams surfing the waves before catching a great wave at the end! Blake and Toby go searching for wild Tuatara reptiles in the Hauraki Gulf Islands and find one laying on a log. Blake got really close to the Tuatara and it quickly moved away. Blake also found a Weta house with giant Weta inside and he got a fright when his dad suggested a Weta was on his leg. Blake and Toby wanted to keep the location of the Tuatara private, so we have combined a mix of footage to ensure the location remains a secret and unfortunately provided little sailing footage. Blake and Toby go to Kawau Island in search for wallabies, they also find a peacock (peafowl) and show you the ruins from the copper mine, smelter and underground tunnels. The find a wallaby and follow it through the forest on the island. It keeps hopping away each time they get close. Wallabies are native to Australia and are part of the Kangaroo family. Sir Governor Grey introduced them to Kawau Island. Blake and Toby also give you some insight on the 4.5 hour and 31 mile journey from Pineharbour in Beachlands to Kawau Island in the Hauraki Gulf, Auckland. The wind was 25-30 knots, so a quick 6-7 knot boat speed the whole way! Blake and Toby embark on a sailing adventure to Rangitoto a dormant New Zealand volcano. Blake describes volcanoes for kids by talking about how a volcanic island is created and we show you some footage of the sailing boats anchored in the bay. Blake and Toby walk part way around the island Rangitoto in Auckland, New Zealand, they find volcanic rocks to throw, Blake slips and hurts himself, our family find a native New Zealand bird called a Saddleback. Blake and Toby show you around our sailing yacht Opal, a 28 ft yacht and on our way to Kawau Island we see dolphins. When Blake shows you around our boat, he points out our dinghy, kayak, front hatch, anchor and chain, outboard motor, tiller and rudder. While Toby shows you inside the boat where we sleep, the fridge and the radio. We show you the footage of dolphins swimming by our boat, including a baby dolphin (Dolphin calf)! One of the dolphins rubs it's tummy on the bottom of the boat. We didn't get a chance to show you, but it was funny just before seeing dolphins, both boys were feeling a bit sea sick, however once we saw the dolphins they said "we aren't sick anymore!".
