I was recently invited to visit the historic Baglietto shipyard in La Spezia, Italy. They have been building boats and yachts since 1854 so there history is pretty impressive. They are gearing up for a great future too though, and that will most certainly be the topic fo future vlogs.
Is this the deserted island of your dreams? Escaping to a tropical island paradise is the stuff of our dreams, making it a reality means always looking around the next corner just to see what is there. Escorted by whales, we sail towards the turquoise waters surrounding our very own deserted island What better way to self isolate? We are a British couple who set off from England in 2016 to fulfill our dream of sailing around the world on our 37ft sail boat, Florence. Along the way we share the live aboard lifestyle with the highs and lows of travelling around the world by boat, our own little tiny house. Boat life out at sea on the ocean and off the grid. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. When we first sailed to Grenada for hurricane season, there were a couple things on our list that we were most looking forward to. In this video we tick BOTH off the list! (Though we would repeat both later on in our stay). Grenada is famous for waterfalls and we finally made it to our first one, Mount Carmel....and it does NOT disappoint. Second is the worldwide sport of HASHING! This involves assembling in a random and new location every week, running through the mountains and jungle on a freshly made path, and drinking beer afterwards. Big emphasis on the beer. Lol. Also, we show you the beginnings of our home-schooling for Rivers...and of course Loren kicks it off with art. :-) Enjoy!! And be sure to SUBSCRIBE for WEEKLY CONTENT EVERY FRIDAY! Cheers!! Thank you very much, you guys are amazing supporting us with your likes and comments, we really feel that we have a new family out there. Much love Carla & Simon A little bit about us... We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. But for these people it's a dream, or may not even be a dream. We will look around and when the opportunity to help comes we will put our hands and hearts in to it. Much love
#Seawind1600 Catamaran - Performance in Light Wind on a Sail to Key West This week we set out on a two day sail from Ft. Lauderdale to Key West for the #SeawindCatamaran rally; a total of 160 nautical miles. We decided to split the sail into two days so we planned to anchor behind Rodriguez Key off of Key Largo. Robin from #Seawind and his girlfriend Margot joined us for the sail. Robin is a local representative from Seawind and he was on board to give us some tips on how to best operate the boat. Before we knew it we were passing Fowey Rocks Lighthouse which is 7 miles southeast of Cape Florida on Key Biscayne. The lighthouse construction was finished in 1878. On February 17th, 1878 the Arratoon Apcar ran aground on the reef. The 1500 ton steamship came to rest just 200 yards (180 m) from the lighthouse. Efforts to save the boat failed, and she was pounded apart on the rocks and sank. Today the wreck is supposed to be an excellent scuba diving site. There was absolutely no wind so we motor sailed with the starboard engine on and the prop in overdrive. The main sail worked to keep the boat more stabilized. We arrived at dark and set anchor behind Rodriguez Key under the full moonlight. It’s a protected anchorage and the water was like glass. The next morning we picked up the anchor just before sunrise and headed south for Key West. The forecast predicted 12 knot winds from the southeast so we were looking forward to doing some sailing. Soon we were passing Alligator Reef Light, located 4 nautical miles east of Indian Key, and southeast of Islamorada. It’s just north of Alligator Reef, which bridges the shallow reefs of the Upper Keys and the deeper reefs of the Middle Keys. The name honors the U.S. Navy schooner Alligator, which went aground at this location in 1822. The Alligator was blown up after removing as much as possible from it to prevent it from being used by pirates. Countless vessels have also sunk here on the reef's jagged coral so we kept a close eye on the chart. With 4 feet of daggerboard down on both sides they helped us keep course on a reach. The wind reached 13 knots so we turned off the engines and were finally sailing. We wanted to arrive in Key West by dark so we needed to move. With 12 knots of wind we averaged 8 knots. A preventer line kept the boom out far enough to fill the sail nicely. Since the wind was relatively light we had the main up and the screecher out. We overlayed the #B&G Sail Steer screen so you can see what the apparent wind angle was, the apparent wind speed, the position, speed over ground, true wind speed, boat speed, true wind angle and true wind direction. You can see the wind was about 12 knots, our boat speed was 9 knots and speed over ground 8 knots. The blue arrow is the direction of the current and you can see there was 1 knot of current flowing against us. If you’re wondering what overdrive is, it’s a feature of the 3-blade Gori folding propeller we have installed. You can choose the propeller pitch and profile in the water while sailing forward, by regulating the yacht's shift and throttle control. The "overdrive" is used when motorsailing in fair weather or when using the engine under sail. The "overdrive" gives the same speed at lower rpms. The result is less engine noise, less vibration and better fuel economy. But now we were powered strictly by the wind and the sails. Sombrero Reef Lighthouse is located offshore of Vaca Key in Marathon on a mostly submerged reef. The name Sombrero Key goes back to the Spanish, and old charts show a small island at the spot, but by the later 19th Century the island had eroded away, with some parts of the reef exposed at low tide. Florida is the only state in the continental United States with extensive shallow coral reef formations near its coasts. Coral reefs lay the foundation of a dynamic ecosystem with tremendous biodiversity and create specialized habitats that provide shelter, food, and breeding sites for numerous plants and animals. Especially important to Florida are the spiny lobster, snapper, and grouper. Florida’s Coral Reef stretches approximately 360 linear miles from Dry Tortugas National Park west of the Florida Keys to the St. Lucie Inlet in Martin County. We continued our march south and arrived at our destination as the sun set and the full moon rose. We anchored just outside of the #StockIsland Marina channel and settled in for the night. Winterizing marine air conditioning, hot and cold water systems, hot water tank, watermaker and even an expresso maker in an Outremer 5X catamaran is not a simple process. This “how to” shows the winterization of an Outremer 5X with all the complications of winterizing 5 air conditioners, emptying the hot water tank, adding antifreeze to fresh and salt water pumps etc. At the end, we debrief on how we would streamline the process next time. What was your scariest moment? was the first question asked of the discussion panel of Pamela Lee, Jamie Boag, Vera Quinlan and Brian Carlin. 23 minutes of true and honest offshore sailing memories. We hadn't panned on videoing this, but it was so magical we pressed record for a while to share some brilliant true and raw memories of Irish Offshore sailors.

We get stuck at Old Bahama Bay Resort, in West End, GBI. Not a bad place to be stuck for a week. A Northerly blew in making the cruising grounds terrifying. So we hang out and make the best of it.
While out exploring around Plymouth this week I found a beach with more ocean waste on it than I've ever seen. I couldn't not do a video on this, sorry it's not. strictly sailing but part of sailing is leaving places better than you found them. This is about how I found the beach and what I'm doing to clean it up. I'd really like some local help, so if you're in the Plymouth, UK area and know someone who might be interested please head to this FB group I've set-up to volunteer: https://www.facebook.com/groups/196156548670220

Equipped with the leading Air Step® technology, the Gran Turismo 46 is the latest generation of sport cruiser. Boldly designed, she boasts a stylish and clever layout with ample opportunity to personalize. Learn More: https://www.beneteau.com/us/gran-turismo/gran-turismo-46 -- About BENETEAU -- The first BENETEAU boats sailed from the shipyards of Croix-de-Vie over 135 years ago. Since that time, the BENETEAU brand has been synonymous with quality and innovation to all those who have taken to the water – first by the fishermen who made their livelihood from the sea and then by the legions of recreational boaters around the globe. Over the years, our commitment to innovating and embracing ideas, no matter how unconventional, has been at the forefront of who we are in order to bring you the best boat possible. BENETEAU was one of the first boatbuilders many years ago to use computer-aided design (CAD) as well as lighter, stronger composite building materials. We’ve also been at the cutting edge of using greener materials and processes to do our part in protecting the incredible world which we explore. However, all this innovation doesn’t mean we’ve turned our back on tradition. One thing we’ve discovered in over a century of boatbuilding is that new-world innovations work best with old-school craftsmanship. This combination has resulted in some of the most iconic sailboats and powerboats in the world – supremely seaworthy yachts renowned for their sense of style, luxury, and comfort along with their creative use of space and new technologies. -- Philosophy -- We’re a lot like you. We love the water in all its forms – the ocean, bays, lakes, and rivers. And we love sharing the boating lifestyle with our family and friends. This love manifests itself in every BENETEAU built in any one of our many manufacturing facilities worldwide. Every BENETEAU sailboat and powerboat on the water reflects the best efforts of the finest architects, designers, and craftsmen along with the highest quality materials and the latest innovations. When you purchase a BENETEAU, you become a valued member of our BENETEAU family. For this reason, our after-sale service is second to none as evidenced by the multitude of National Marine Manufacturers CSI Awards for Excellence in Customer Service. At the core of this outstanding service is our exceptional dealer network. Every one of our authorized BENETEAU dealers will be there for you – from choosing the right yacht to the handover and beyond. Your dealer will be your able guide when it comes to maintaining your boat properly and will help you maximize the return on your investment when it comes time to step up to another BENETEAU – and it usually does! We wouldn’t have it any other way. In this episode we go over the construction of the plank keel for our Newfoundland Trap Skiff build. We discuss flattening the slab using a homemade flattening jig, lofting and cutting the keel to shape, patching knots and nailholes with dutchmen, planing, transferring the bevel details, shaping the keel's bevel, and sealing with red lead primer.
