Thanksgiving began early this year as we needed to catch the wind! We left Bohicket Marina on Monday around 2 PM and caught a nice NW wind right out of the channel. After teaching our guests how to raise the main sail and fly the genoa, we decided to put up the parasailor instead! Conditions were supposed to be perfect for this sail. So, we taught our guests how to furl the genoa and lower the main sail. Then we spent an hour getting the parasailor rigged and hoisted and set. Our NW wind was due to clock around to N, then to NE, then to E, from 18-22 knots. And that it did! We were able to average 8.5 knots with the parasailor, with high speed around 10. We sailed all night long with just a few adjustments. Aside from the block that got a little bent from pressure in the wrong spots, the parasailor performed beautifully. We arrived at St. Simons Inlet around daybreak and proceeded in. On the way in, we went right by the MV Golden Ray, a shipwreck from Sept 2019, where a car carrier freighter had misadjusted his ballast and ended up on his side. They are still dismantling it and we were able to get a good view from the water. More on that here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_Golden_Ray LINKS: BLOG SITE: https://bluedotvoyages.com FACEBOOK: https://facebook.com/bluedotvoyages INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/bluedotvoyages.sailingpilar VIDEO SHORTS - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLz8Z8h1MloaOcbszDZomQLhRz9PeLVL2G ALL EPISODES - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLz8Z8h1MloaPq2o05r6wnJqaqyeABUKiu LONG VOYAGES - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLz8Z8h1MloaMVYY-0QB1x8dgRkA9laYnD Blue Dot Voyages is a Sailing Adventure Company. Different materials have different radar signatures. Steel gives a good return, so a steel boat will give a good return on radar, unless it has been designed in such a way as to reflect the waves off away from the transmitter. GRP gives a very poor return, which is kind of handy, because radome enclosures are often made of GRP. If the RF energy couldn't escape the enclosure, we would never see anything with radar! What might come as a surprise, is that a 40 ft GRP (or wood) sailing boat can actually be pretty easy to miss on a radar screen. The hull can effectively be 'invisible' to radar. The engine block will give a return, but this a relatively small lump of metal in the grand scale of things. There may be a little ping off the mast too, but unless you have a radar reflector fitted, this kind of boat is pretty stealthy, despite its large size. A boat owner could sail for years and not know this, as a 40 ft boat is generally quite easy to see, so the owner would never see any evidence of his/her invisibility on radar as other vessels may always see this vessel with the Mk1 eyeball, so a near miss would never occur. However, if this vessel was ever caught out in fog, any ships in the vicinity would be relying primarily on electronic navigation aids for collision avoidance... Discovering that your boat is not visible on ships' radars is one lesson you don't want to learn the hard way. This is why SOLAS regulations mean that having a radar reflector on board is obligatory (There is an "if practicable" get-out clause in there, but good luck with defending that if you ever found yourself in a sticky situation and didn't have a radar reflector fitted). We have attached a PDF document which outlines the SOLAS requirements for leisure boats. There aren't many requirements, and most of them are common-sense things. The radar reflector requirement is something that could be missed though and if you walk around a marina you will probably find boats without radar reflectors fitted. This video covers our old provisional radar reflector - which was cheap, quick and easy to install, and served its purpose, which was to allow us to meet the legal requirements for us to get out on the water. What it didn't do was give me confidence that Britaly would be visible to ships on their radar screens. If you are sleeping at anchor in a little backwater anchorage where ships never venture, this isn't a problem (unless you hit fog on your travels). If you are anchoring solo inside a channel which is also used by ships, this doesn't make for a relaxing night's sleep, which is why I used our Echomax 230 for the first time in this anchorage. ⛵Sailing Britaly⛵ We are Chris (British), Rossella (Italian), and Emma (Britalian!) I’ve been living without a large intestine for the past two years and had Ulcerative Colitis for 10 years before that. This condition has been a real struggle but doesn’t stop me from doing the things I want to do. Ive sailed solo across the ocean, dived with sharks, backpacked through the jungle, climbed giant mountains, worked in a foreign country, and competed in an international paragliding competition all without a colon. EP 152: Curious SEALS playing with GO PRO! After enjoying a magical sunset and a tango on the deck of Lady Africa we opted to hop in the freezing waters of Cape Town and go for a Scuba Dive. The water was a bone chilling 8'degrees Celsius. (Yay so warm) We went for two dives.. A kelp dive for Glen and Ricky and a seal Dive for me and Wade. They were so curious about us and our bubbles. It was so magical but up to a point until our bodies were in spasm and numb 🥶🥶 We opted to take a defrost on Clifton Beach and soak up the sun to the maximum. We also awaited Alex Thomson's arrival into Cape Town. See ya next week!! You’ll want to be armed with this info because it WILL make a massive difference in the broker you work with, the policy you decide on and the amount of $$$ you’ll pay! Picking out your boat is exciting and fun! You can hardly wait to get out on the water but there’s one really important part left (other than paying for the boat!)………..boat insurance! There’s so much inaccurate and bad information out there it’s really hard to tell what’s true! What policy do we need? What coverages are best for our boat? Our family? Is it ok to live on the boat? What if this is my first boat? The questions are seemingly endless, which is why after receiving so many e-mails, we decided to put together a video with our awesome broker Hugo Hanham (Hanham Insurance Agency), to help pull back the curtain on the cloud of boat insurance and share real, honest information! Yes, this episode is a bit long, but it’s filled with crucial info and great tips so bust out a note pad and pen and let’s get going! You’re going to have a little homework to do after this one and so will the broker you choose to do business with! Main topics covered in this video and much more: 1. Three main factors that will determine your premiums 2. What is a boat resume? 3. Find a good broker who will represent you well! 4. Liveaboard or part-time cruising? 5. What's good insurance policy? 6. Policy coverage limits? 7. Will our premium go up if we put in a claim? 8. Do hurricane zones affect our premium? 9. What happens with our policy if our plans change? 10. What is a named storm deductible? 11. Will my premium go down if I don't have any claims? 12. What makes a good broker? 13. What happens with our premium if we decide to sail to Europe and Australia? 14. And the overview 15. Do I need a hurricane plan? Two Links from our Boat Insurance Broker: 1. The first page is a good guide on things to consider when making a hurricane plan. I find that most first time boat owners think "We will just outrun the storm", so this page I wrote, explains how to correctly think about preparing for a hurricane. It is good content for sure. https://www.hanhaminsurance.com/hurricane-plans 2. The second page is a simple page to download an example resume that is easy to edit and make your own. I find that with a resume, the less "Fluff" that is on there the better. Just the basics, and this will help boaters....especially first time boat owners or people making a jump in size. https://www.hanhaminsurance.com/boating-resume Live With Passion 💕 ~ Your Crew: Andy, Maki, Oliver & Lukas _______________________________________ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sailingsvoliluki Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SailingSVOliLuki Subscribe and click on a little bell: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAqgweJ0U1NbIIOm30j8i6g?sub_confirmation=1 _________________________________________ Royalty Free Music: https://www.soundstripe.com, link for 20% off when you sign up: https://app.soundstripe.com/referrals/80358 Music Artists on this Video: Raspeebies by Dresden, The Flamingo: https://app.soundstripe.com/songs/7814 Lucky Number 7 by Dresden, The Flamino: https://app.soundstripe.com/songs/11631 _________________________________________ About Us: We are a family of four from Southern California, (San Clemente) about to set sail in April of 2020. Join us as we document our travel experiences, adventures and uncertainties that come along. 3 years ago we sat down as a family and shared a dream that we all wanted to see come true. A dream that we take a window of time in our lives to do something truly special together, an extended sailing trip, an adventure that would stay with us for the rest of our lives.
In our first week of living aboard our new boat, we have experienced many highs and lows, and learned so much about boat life. We have been exuberant about pushing through and overcoming challenges. And, we have been humbled and humiliated by our lack of knowledge. But, we have survived and dare I say, thrived. We love it. Every day, the unusual becomes normal. This video is a recap of some of the highs and lows we experienced. We talk about everything from adjusting to sleeping on a boat to our first solo dinghy excursion. There have been lots of smiles and thankfully, no tears…yet! Our hope is that this video will be an inspiration to anyone who is considering a big change or is facing a challenge. We are living proof that you can face your fears and find joy in the process. #sailing #sailboat #sailingprojects #stlucia #highsandlows NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. Ciao Amici! Durante i miei studi ho vissuto a Londra, Montreal (Canada) e Parigi. Ora vivo e lavoro a Copenaghen, in Danimarca. Amo andare in barca a vela e fare subacquea. ★ Il mio canale: Giugyssima Cosa: video sullo studio e sulla crescita personale ma anche per vlog motivazionali che vi ispireranno a dare il massimo in ogni aspetto della vostra vita! Having a small boat comes with a lot of challenges, Nala has a great double bed aft cabin but its useful only for coastal cruising, the last 4 years we been using it as storage, so we decided to make some permanent changes. As there was a prediction for strong winds coming we decided to leave Portland Harbour and go to a more protected anchorage. The wind was very light and was against us so we decided to motorsail. The first day we went from Portland Harbour to Studland. It took us almost 5 hours to do 26 nm. Several massive cruise ships have been arriving in Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour which continue to be used as holding bays for the vessels during the coronavirus situation. It’s quite funny seeing all of them anchored together. Apart from really strange currents going through Lulworth Banks we had a great sail over to Studland. The second day we left Studland Bay and arrived to Newtown Creek, our final destination. It was very calm until we got to The Needles Channel were we encountered a really strong current that pushed us all the way in. At the narrowest point of the entrance, between Hurst Point and Fort Albert, tidal streams attain a mid-channel flow of up to 3.9 knots on the flood and 4.4 knots on the ebb. Fortunatly, The Solent flood lasts for about nine hours and the ebb between three and a half to four hours. So short, sharp ebbs and longer periods of favourable tides on approaches can be expected. Once we made it to Newtown Creek we got ready for the storm. We filled up the water tanks and got on a mooring buoy. We were going to watch a lot of films on the next few days... Before I started sailing with Kiraucassis I had zero experience on a Mini 6.50. And if I understand the logic behind the different boat designs, it is really interesting to test them on the water. This time I got to embark on Leo's boat, he is the leader of the 6.50 circuit this year, and he is sailing a a Pogo3, which are the direct competition of the Maxis. Then I got to deliver a prototype. I was by yself and pretty tired from the race just before so I haven't pushed the boat to it's limit but could clearly feel the potential of the design. Follow us, Talia and Michel, as we navigate our first few days aboard our new home: a 1983 Whitby 42 sailboat. We go on our first adventure with the new boat: a quick Toronto Island getaway, launch the Genoa for the first time, and fuel up for the impending winter aboard. Talia, an airline pilot, flies off to Tel Aviv, Israel and gives us a glimpse of the Tel Aviv Marina. In the meantime, in Toronto, Michel discovers that their old home (which he's still using as an office) is being torn apart. The cherry on top: boat projects begin to pile up, and is now the only place we can call home.
Last episode, I discussed what I'm asking from my boat, SV Wahine, and if she's safe enough to get me across the Pacific on my solo crossing. It's only fair she ask the same of me. I'm readying myself both physically and mentally, and there is much to do before I set off next June. Fortunately, UFC Gym in Tokyo -- a part of Keel Club founding member company BetterU -- has come on as my fitness sponsor, and I'm working closely with the gym's head trainer Darrell Harris to retrain and strengthen muscles crucial to sailing. Hello :) In this video, we take it slow, sailing around the southern coast of Corsica in the Summer. The days are long and very hot. We enjoy some amazing anchorages and set sail towards Bonifacio, our last stop in Corsica before moving on and try and anchor in the Cala Fazzio but fail and bump the bottom of the boat on a rock! We do some baking onboard, and go for a long hot walk before Lars breaks the paddle board and I (Alex) have to act as a human rudder to tow us back to the boat. Thanks for watching! Designed by the talented hands of Nuvolari and Lenard, the Gran Turismo 40 recreates the sport cruiser concept. A perfectly-proportioned interior and superior performance make her not only eye-catching, but a pleasure to drive. Learn More: https://www.beneteau.com/us/gran-turismo/gran-turismo-40 -- About BENETEAU -- The first BENETEAU boats sailed from the shipyards of Croix-de-Vie over 135 years ago. Since that time, the BENETEAU brand has been synonymous with quality and innovation to all those who have taken to the water – first by the fishermen who made their livelihood from the sea and then by the legions of recreational boaters around the globe. Over the years, our commitment to innovating and embracing ideas, no matter how unconventional, has been at the forefront of who we are in order to bring you the best boat possible. BENETEAU was one of the first boatbuilders many years ago to use computer-aided design (CAD) as well as lighter, stronger composite building materials. We’ve also been at the cutting edge of using greener materials and processes to do our part in protecting the incredible world which we explore. However, all this innovation doesn’t mean we’ve turned our back on tradition. One thing we’ve discovered in over a century of boatbuilding is that new-world innovations work best with old-school craftsmanship. This combination has resulted in some of the most iconic sailboats and powerboats in the world – supremely seaworthy yachts renowned for their sense of style, luxury, and comfort along with their creative use of space and new technologies. -- Philosophy -- We’re a lot like you. We love the water in all its forms – the ocean, bays, lakes, and rivers. And we love sharing the boating lifestyle with our family and friends. This love manifests itself in every BENETEAU built in any one of our many manufacturing facilities worldwide. Every BENETEAU sailboat and powerboat on the water reflects the best efforts of the finest architects, designers, and craftsmen along with the highest quality materials and the latest innovations. When you purchase a BENETEAU, you become a valued member of our BENETEAU family. For this reason, our after-sale service is second to none as evidenced by the multitude of National Marine Manufacturers CSI Awards for Excellence in Customer Service. At the core of this outstanding service is our exceptional dealer network. Every one of our authorized BENETEAU dealers will be there for you – from choosing the right yacht to the handover and beyond. Your dealer will be your able guide when it comes to maintaining your boat properly and will help you maximize the return on your investment when it comes time to step up to another BENETEAU – and it usually does! We wouldn’t have it any other way. Hello Everyone! Drum roll please.....It's time for Season 2!! Summer is over, our sailing kitty has been restored, we are now captains and ready to get back out there! We moved to Key West for the summer to work with Sunset Watersports, as mates on their snorkel and dolphin boats. With the odd job here and there, and 14 hr days, 6 days a week, we finally saved up enough to start getting good ole "The Far Side" ready for takeoff:) Continue to follow along by subscribing to our channel or giving us a like or comment! This is a Q&A style video where we answer questions about our RV trip. - Favorite places. - Dangerous drivers. - Worst roads. - Fuel economy. - and loads more that 93% of our audience could care less about! It's OK though, because the RV trip is finally complete. Now we begin the transition back into "boat-mode". Things are about to get interesting. ~ Ben, Tambi, & Molly | "SAILBOATSTORY" [ SUPPORT THE CHANNEL ] https://patreon.com/sailboatstory | Join the crew and help keep the cameras rolling! https://paypal.me/sailboatstory | Make a donation and help upgrade our camera gear!
