It’s day four of our offshore passage north from the Bahamas headed up along the east coast of the US. Bill is about 30 miles offshore from North Carolina when the rod head on the forward lower shroud exploded. He’s sailing Calico Skies solo and Grace is crewing on our friends boat, s/v Delos. We’ve become separated over the course of this passage and Delos is now over 30 miles ahead, closer to the notorious Cape Hatteras. While the crew of Delos is struggling with terrible weather and and recently a ripped jib, Bill is arguably in a worse position being low on gas and unable to sail thanks to the failure in the rod rigging. In this episode, both Calico Skies and Delos deal with steep seas, high wind and generally nasty conditions, and see 25 - 30 knots on the nose. In addition, the boats have not been in communication with each other for a full 24 hours. Bill’s satellite phone is functioning normally but connection has been lost on Delos and they are offline. Grace, Brian & Kazza have no idea that Bills' had a rig failure and is diverting course to Beaufort and will not be rounding the Cape and arriving into the Chesapeake with Delos. This location is not as big as other locations that I have been too, but it is nearby so I did not want to go clear across town. On fait la rencontre de 2 requins en haute mer qui avaient probablement très faim parce qu’ils nous ont volé notre poisson agressivement !! On visite une île déserte à couper le souffle, on tente de sauver un animal, on visite la ville de Marsh Harbour qui a été détruite par l’ouragan Dorian en catégorie 5 un an passé exactement et notre moteur s’éteint en pleine navigation d’un passage serré entre deux rochers. Auf unserem Weg von Heiligenhafen nach Schweden brachen wir bei bestem Sommerwetter von Kerteminde zu unserem zweiten Schlag auf. Viel Wind war leider nicht, dafür umso mehr Sonne und an Bord wurde es bald unerträglich heiß. Einziger Ausweg war eine Wasserschlacht an Deck, auch wenn das Ostseewasser im ersten Moment ein wenig zu erfrischend war! In this video, we explore our final stop in Corsica, the fascinating town of Bonifacio which is right at the southern tip of the island. We hike across and make it there for breakfast, and spend the rest of the morning strolling the narrow alleyways and taking in the incredible views from the top of the perched citadel. We start planning our next steps ahead of some strong wind coming and decide to cross the Strait of Bonifacio separating Corsica and Sardinia to hide out in Sardinia. We have a quick stop off on some of the islands in the straits, and find a sheltered bay on Sardinia mainland for us to be able to have internet coverage. Alex works on her music project, recording some songs aboard in Spanish and we literally enjoy the calm before the storm that will hit soon.
