Does a cruising sailboat really need a security system? Can a sailboat security system really prevent theft on sailboats, yachts and motorboats? We have finally upgraded the security system on our yacht "Brick House', to the best security system for boats that I could find. Petty theft on sailboats and motor yacht has become a bigger and bigger problem as we sail around the world, and this year it was time to figure out what our sailboat needs for a security system, and which brand was the best security system to put on our sailboat, as we continue our circumnavigation. GOST Global probably provides the best security system for yachts, sailboats and power boats, simply because it specialises in marine security, exclusively. I ordered the most basic security system, with just the basic boat alarms and components, but I was surprised that GOST also sent some additional components to protect from break ins and thefts on Brick House. I think they knew I was likely going to do a sailing video on sailboat security someday and they wanted to look their best in the sailboat video we made, if we made one. And indeed I have made one...security onboard is a subject we take quite seriously...we want to protect what we have. We now have loud alarms and lights in addition to remote arming, monitoring, and other security features with cellular and satellite connectivity. I know that our boat is protected from petty theft, as well as the boat being stolen, and that cruising on Brick House is now much safer no matter where we sail in the world! The name of the company we used was GOST Global. Their website is here...but it’s best to call them and tell them you would like something like what Brick House has installed, and with the budget Brick House had...It doesn’t need to be thousands and thousands of dollars, although GOST Global is NOT cheap! https://www.gostglobal.com/. We installed this security system ourselves. I would highly recommend a professional installation as there is a lot of fine tuning and science and art to installing a security system on a boat. While we focus our time and energy on sanding, fiber glassing, and varnishing, Avocet has become basically unlivable so we have taken up temporary residence in Chris's mom's Mason 43', Sea Castle, now conveniently docked right next door! Sea Castle had previously been docked in the San Francisco Bay for 28 years but this July we sailed out of the Golden Gate and south towards a sea of new memories and warmer waters. With a capable crew and a boat built for fun, we made it safely to Ventura, 3 days and 425 nautical miles later. After our little reef incident earlier in the year, we have discovered a few under lying issues that have been coming too light. One of those being the cutlass bearing wore rapidly and needs replacing. Since we have a Sigma drive, the alignment is all okay and therefore I think Nandji has a bent shaft. To find this out I must pull apart the entire drive system of Nandji to find out. This involves removing the rudder, releasing the sigma drive, removing the shaft and then taking off the prop so the shaft can be put in a lathe to see how bad it is... With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it!
