Catamaran vs Sailboat, 9 important differences you should know! For more info Check out; https://www.Catamaranfreedom.com/CatvsMono 1. Catamarans have two hulls and sailboats or monohulls have one 2. Monohulls will rock from side to side 3. Catamarans offer much more space for the same length 4. Catamarans make horrible noises while sailing upwind 5. Monohulls are slower than Catamarans 6. Catamarans offer less handling feedback 7. Monohulls are harder to dock 8. Catamarans are more fuel-efficient 9. Catamarans offer more comfort

It's about time we get to work restoring our rusty keel back to better than new. Cast Iron keels just want to rust, and ours is no different. After a much needed media blasting we get to work with silica and epoxy filling in the pitting before lathering on a nice epoxy barrier coat. We're counting the days before the keel and boat are ready for a reunion! This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. Sailing through difficult reef passages, balancing the risk of being shipwrecked versus the reward of discovering new cruising grounds and amazing turquoise water lagoons. This is what exploring means to us, something that makes us nervous but also excited. These remote islands in the Indian Ocean off of West Sumatra - Indonesia, are an undiscovered gem of the cruising world. We are a British couple who set off from England in 2016 to fulfill our dream of sailing around the world on our 37ft sail boat, Florence. Along the way we share the live aboard lifestyle with the highs and lows of travelling around the world by boat, our own little tiny house. Boat life out at sea on the ocean and off the grid. Then we are at the final chapter 5, sailing the last miles towards back home to Haugesund. On my way I visited the beatiful island of Foula, west of Shetland before crossing the North Sea back home again. Its been together a 2400 NM trip for a 5 weeks sail. And after this 6 months of constant editing to get these 5 videoes done. Ive learned alot on the way and I cant wait to use this knowledge in my next expedition wich will be revealed in my next video. I really hope you have enjoyed this saga around the Norwegian Sea, and I hope Ive inspired you to see what is possible both sailwise and videowise, beeing all alone about everything. Until next time! Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. It's time for more friends to arrive in Annapolis, and when sv Delos enters these waters, we hop in a 17ft Boston Whaler to hunt them down. After we make another quick run out to Kentmorr marina to inspect the tent and the Viking a little closer, it's time to celebrate the weekend in style. We get word that our good friends Will and Grace of s/v Calico Skies are making their way into Annapolis, ready to take some time off from their boat and join our little household on shore. But along with them on the ride in, is the well known Brian and Kazza of s/v Delos. We take on the overcast skies and choppy seas to give them a nice welcome into town, and even have to lend a hand as Delos' deep draft does not want to let them in the channel, and they keep running around as they try to work they're way in. We hope you enjoy! Much love from Annapolis! Jessica, Matt & Georgie Thank you SO MUCH to our Patrons. I have finally set sail and leave but only 15 minutes later the bilge alarm started screaming. I had to find out the problem so I hove-to to see the danger. With the winds getting stronger and almost all my electronics dead it looked like the day was going to be a very long one indeed. A hurricane on the way, sailing to safety in a leaking. It involved begging and trying to behave a bit but it worked : we were invited to sail along on the NEW Outremer 55 #1 on a beautiful Sunday. Always a bit scary when you buy a boat from paper only but very satisfying if the actual result meets your hopes and expectations.
Our FIRST NIGHT in Carriacou had serious DRAMA and NOT a lot of SLEEP. It was a rainy and stormy passage, followed by a squall-filled night at anchor in Tyrell Bay. Things got dicey when the boats around us started dragging anchor! Later we get to do some exploring, including the beautiful Paradise Beach Bar, where we enjoyed a beautiful night we new sailing friends. Enjoy!! And be sure to SUBSCRIBE for WEEKLY CONTENT EVERY FRIDAY! Cheers!! Thanks for watching SailAway, the travel documentary of an adventurous sailing couple, plus toddler and dog, sailing the world! What We Learned While #SailingKeyWest | Harbors Unknown Ep. 10 If you haven't seen our performance in light wind video, check it out here. https://youtu.be/FH-5X-eXv4Y or watch the sailing playlist here https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLCwNmkqXr8562e564Xf2Ih6i-VSvG9POu . After last week’s friendly race #sailing in #KeyWest we headed to #WesternSamboReef, off of the Boca Chica Naval Air Station and picked up a mooring to snorkel a bit. The Western Sambo Ecological Reserve contains the greatest habitat diversity in the Lower Keys so I was excited to check it out. Unfortunately the water was a bit choppy and there was quite a strong current so I stayed super close to the boat. A rectangular nine-square nautical mile area, Western Sambo Ecological Reserve begins at the water's edge off the sandy beaches and salt ponds of Boca Chica Naval Air Station. It continues through nearshore hard bottom and inshore patch reefs, out across mid-channel reefs in Hawk Channel, over offshore patch reefs and the shallow bank reef, and ends at a depth of 60 feet. Anemones, crabs, starfish, sea cucumbers, sand dollars, and sea urchins are found nearshore. Surgeonfish, bar jacks, four eye butterflyfish, rosy blennies, neon gobies, grunts, wrasses, angelfish, damselfish, striped parrotfish, butter hamlets, sharp nosed puffers, and schoolmasters are residents at the reef. Huge gray angelfish and hogfish meander the shallow areas of Western Sambo. The biggest fish I saw was a barracuda who was eyeing me. I think the sparkly front screen of the GoPro was attracting his attention. Luckily he stayed away. The next morning I was invited to go for a short flight in a small 5-seater Cirrus plane over Key West to enjoy the beautiful view. It was my first time in such a small plane but I was excited to see the water from the air. It’s incredible to see the Western Sambo reef from the air. There is so much more to explore than what we visited. I hope to come back one day. We flew over Ballast Key, a private island located just 9 miles to the south of Florida’s Key West region. This jewel of an island forms the southernmost point of land in the United States. Ballast Key is the only private island within the Key West National Wildlife Reserve. Home to a decadent main house, a charming guest house, beaches galore and mile upon mile of unspoiled wildlife, this tranquil, 26 acre private island has something of a celebrity past; hosting a veritable who’s who of the American cultural and literary scene and even featuring within 1989’s popular James Bond venture, License to Kill. Before we knew it our flight was over. But the memory will last a lifetime. We headed back to the #StockIslandMarina, where the boat was docked for the week. It’s the largest deep water marina in all of the #FloridaKeys, and is more than just a place to dock your boat. It’s a 40 plus acre community, adjacent to the #PerryHotelKeyWest complete with a pool, gym, laundry facilities, bars + restaurants. There are many liveaboard residents in the marina, many of whom use their parking spot to create a front patio. It is soo cute! In a few week’s we’ll share our sail back to Fort Lauderdale but let’s just say it started off quite interesting. For now, we'll share some of the things we learned while #sailinginKeyWest. Probably the most useful thing we learned was how to use the preventer when sailing downwind. It's the first time we've had a boat without a traveler so there are some nuances to get used to with the sheet system. Once we figured out the preventer it's quite easy and we used it a lot. We realized that we'd like to change the hook on the anchor bridle. It falls off the bridle every time even when everything is aligned and perfect for anchoring. We learned the daggerboards are near impossible to raise or lower while under way. You either need to raise or lower them before setting sail or turn into the wind to release pressure on the daggerboards. Next we realized the screecher is very difficult to furl on a port tack. The sheet and furler are on the starboard side. The sheet is typically on the winch so the furler needs to be pulled by hand which is really difficult. We're researching a solution to this challenge. Finally, a viewer asked about slapping and was concerned slapping would be an issue with the #Seawind1600. We measured the distance from the bridge deck to the water line and the nacelle to the water line and both are within the standard recommendation for a 52' #catamaran. Thanks! Marine electrical systems Part 1 explains shore power and how an isolation transformer protects your boat galvanic corrosion and protects you from electric shock drowning risk. Pierre explains the way power is brought to the boat on BioTrek: the lithium batteries store the power so that we do not need to rely on variable power and variable quality of cabling on the dock. He explains electrical drift along the dock and why a galvanic insulator is not the solution to protect you and your boat. This video created while under quarantine in Canada and some view of the Otonabee river which is part of the Trent-Severn waterway system that connects Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay. A very quick video this week. Had minimal time working on foxy lady due to work commitments and also fixing some other boats to help fund Foxy Lady's repairs. Been raining a lot and checked on a few members boats and found my own had taken a fair bit of water on.. Hoping to find some time this week to get back to the grind in the s'board cabin.
On Day 1 of the PRADA America???s Cup World Series, we tagged along with Ben Costello— a 21-year veteran sailmaker. Ben is the service manager at our loft in Auckland New Zealand. He’s the guy who keeps the loft floor in check, and he’s also the man to speak with if you want to hop a ride to watch the AC75s cup close and live. Ben is lucky enough to experience the 36th America’s Cup close to home. In this edition, there’ll be no getting up in the middle of the night like most of us around the world! Yesterday, his day began like any other – dropping the kids off at school, then heading into the loft on Archers Road. But, yesterday had a very special ending. After work, Ben and a few of the North Sails New Zealand crew took the tender and ventured out onto the Hauraki Gulf for the first day of racing. This is Ben’s story.
See the rollover of Hull #1 of the LM46, a high-performance cruising yacht with a modern exterior and classically styled interior finish. The yacht is the newest introduction from Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding. During the hull rollover of this modern Kevin Dibley-designed hull, the composite wood construction of the interior is revealed. Lyman-Morse boatbuilding at its finest.
