Vlog #27 We leave Punta Mita and start heading north so we can take our boat out of the water while we go home to work for hurricane season. We decided to stop into San Blas to refuel and provision for our trip. As we were sitting at the fuel dock is when the pandemic broke out and marinas and towns were closing everywhere to new people. We decided it would be best to stay put to ensure we had somewhere to stay. We stayed here about a month before departing home to Canada. When we returned we were suprised and happy to see that our boat was still floating and intact! We took the mast off so we could re rigg it with dynema. --------------------------------- *WHO ARE WE?* •We are a Canadian couple, Travis and Jessica. In 1997, after a disastrous Olympic rowing campaign, Rob decided to row a seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014, we invested in Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Robert's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with our three children, Finn 17, Declan 15 and Ivan 12, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world, meet the locals and record our adventures. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Faute de ne pouvoir attaquer les gros travaux de répa-rations de nos moteurs par procrastination de notre mécano, nous bricolons, checkons ce qui peut l’être et faisons le point sur nos équipements du bord. Mais ici, comme ailleurs, les choses se complique, une rumeur de lock down nous inquiètes et après un mois d’attente, sans avoir dépanner d’un pouce nos propulseurs, nous prenons la décision de bouger et d’avancer vers le sud, en espérant avoir plus de chance pour remédier à notre problème à Cap Town. En si peu de temps, nous avons rencontré un nombre in-croyable de nouvelles bananas, des amitiés se sont tissées, des soirées se sont passées, des au revoir sont obligés… 16 décembre, demain, nous quittons Richards bay à 4 heures du matin. Une fenêtre de quelques jours devrait nous porter avec vent et courants vers notre objectif, en attendant, nous nous sou-venons de notre passage avec Pirates. com : « La route de navi-gation de Richards Bay à Cape Town n’est pas à prendre à la lé-gère. N’ayant rien à prouver, aucun défi à relever et conscients du danger, nous allons aborder cette traversée avec toutes les précautions et l’humilité qu’il se doit. Première étape, Durban à un peu moins de cent milles. Si nous nous basons sur une moyenne de 5 nœuds, il va nous falloir environ vingt heures. Le prochain coup de vent est prévu dans deux jours, ce qui nous laisse le temps d’arriver. »
