Feathering is a technique used to sail upwind. It involves using the heel of the boat to maintain its balance. So during windy conditions, lighter sailors (with weight range less than 40kg) can use the leeward heel to point up in the gusts. I never really worried too much about shaft seals until I realized I had a PYI dripless shaft seal on Reverie, our 1985 Pearson 34 #sailboat I was cleaning behind the engine and I bumped it and water came in. At first I was concerned, but it sealed right away on its own. So decided to learn more about it. Shaft seals are an important piece of equipment on a #sailboat . It is also a safety element when #sailing . This video shares what I learned. It also has a presentation by Pablo Soto of General Propeller when he explains the difference between the dripless shaft seals types and styles. I then explained the rational for our selection of a shaft seal for Reverie,. There are things you need to consider such as the location of your stern tube, the outer diameter of your stern tube, the diameter of your shaft and the distance between your shaft coupler and the edge of the stern tube. Rumor has it that in two weeks time we will start our flight operations again. Fingers crossed. In the meantime enjoy a ride on the jump seat from Palma to Nuremberg.

Living aboard a sailboat in wintertime is .. special, but so cool, warmer than you might think and always surprising with crispy situations. We played a bit with the camera and put together some shots for you, still learning and searching for our own way to document our journey on YouTube. We leave Karratha and after a roadside stop in the middle of nowhere with a cosy night in our new rooftop tent, we drive across the plains to Broome. In Broome, we visit Matso’s Brewery, which is number three on our list. After tasting a paddle we again head off on the road towards Darwin to the next brewery. But, on the way, we head down to the shore to see from the inside out what we will see from the outside in, when we sail to the Kimberley. We hope you enjoy seeing the vast Australia outback with us. This episode was filmed in 11 / 2020. — Welcome to Untie The Lines! my name is Nike, I bought an aluminum 37 foot sailboat in Panama in 2013 that I named KARL. I spent a good year refitting it, mostly by myself and with the help of awesome friends, and then (mostly) solo sailed my sailboat around the western Caribbean. In 2016, I crossed the Panama Canal, had a major engine break down, a near sinking experience and a serious foot injury which got me stuck along the Pacific coast of Central and South America. This episode is a bit of a rant... don’t get me wrong, I love my life and all the ups and downs that come with it most of the time. But sometimes things get overwhelming and frustrating and I get lost. I am aware of the fact that there are problems out there in the world that are waaay bigger than this and this little rant is not supposed to diminish the suffering of other people. REFIT SAILING YACHT Beneteau 57 - final preparations to start sailing. Sailing is what we came out here to do and not do a refit yacht for over a year. C*rona did make a mess out of our plan for refit sailing yacht. But to be honest, with all the things we have done together with the yard on our sailing yacht, the Refit sailboat and these final preparations makes it so safe for us to go sailing around the world. What is a sailboat without the installing navigational instruments? We know how that is, in 2019 way before the refit sailing boat, we got struck by lightening and were sailing the whole year without. So you can imagine how happy we are with our refit sailing vlog and especially because we can be a sailing family vlog soon and with so much more confidence with all these final preparations to start sailing. Our sailboat project vlog wil come to an end after this video of refitting a Beneteau. We are already sailing in our refitting a Bluewater sailing boat, a Beneteau 57. I have completed all the prep and applied the first top coat, but it is time to complete the project and make the white walls look immaculate. I like to make things as best as they can be to the skills I have and believe not to cut corners, but to put the effort in to make a beautiful finished result. This is one reason why the davits has frustrated me so much... But I have control of the outcome of the white walls and as this is the first thing you see when you head downstairs, it has to be perfect. But as I quote Bonita's old man once again "That's about as good as you're gonna get it" He was a painter for 20 years too! With the white walls complete, the transformation really takes shape with the layers of varnish beginning. The key to making varnish look good is layers. Sanding between each application and then applying another layer. Over and over and over. The goal of reaching at least 7 layers should do it 👌 With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef... We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace as we have just had our first baby, born in Malaysia! Now completing our second major refit, Nandji is ready for the world when the world is ready for us!!! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World!
