In this episode, we head for a solo trip to the Isthmus at Catalina Island. There is a coming small craft advisory, so I decide to take the day off work to get in front of it. Along the way, I changed my mind and decided to enjoy a nice sail back to the slip. It seemed like a good decision at the time. I avoided the drama of another single handed mooring pickup (in what would have likely been 15kts wind), avoided paying for 2 nights' mooring, and did not have to negotiate trying to dinghy to the island as the winds picked up on Saturday. I believe it is a good idea to remain flexible with your plans at all times and, at the end of the day, I was happy with my decision. The sail back to harbor was super chill and relaxing. Ep 3 A quick update on the building of Salt & Light a Dix470 catamaran in Japan. Boathouse is still waiting on getting approval from the Fire Department regulators.

Take a ride with me to El Capitan Reservoir in east county San Diego. This is a beautiful, remote lake. It was my first time here, and I thought I would make a full day’s adventure out of it. Luckily, I have a good break-down rod, a 2-piece Okuna spinning reel which was perfect for the journey. I have 10 lb test mono loaded on this rig, and I used a 4 1/2” Roboworm with a pencil drop shot rig set about 18” down from the hook. I also tried an underspin swim bait and a small bass plastic lure. I parked my bike, the Husqvarna FE350, and hiked around, fishing several locations for a few hours. Unfortunately, I had no bites, but what a fun time!! I would absolutely do this again, maybe with a few different rigs and bait options...and can’t wait to try my kayak out here at El Capitan. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. I go diving and discover lobster everywhere... so many in fact that there were not enough proper hiding spots. I even got charged by one, classic! I feed another moray eel and boy is she hungry taking 3 bloody fish. After that I shoot a trunkfish... oh no! These are the crazy looking triangle fish but the cubans tell me that they are great taste like chicken so I try it out and let you know. Margarida has seen enough and is keen to get to Cayo Largo to pick up her parents so we visit the well and fill up our tanks and all our gerry cans. Its interesting to note that even though we were not strict on out water consumption knowing there was a well available we still only used 4.5 litres per person per ay (about 1.2 gallons). And yes we are again having dinner with our Cuban friends and it is going to be a feast with conch, lobster, fish and hutia the rat like rodent again... wooo hoooo. Good buy to our Cuban friends! Wa tokelwapo nos Bananas lovers😍 Bon voilà, nous ne pouvons résisté, nous vous avons assez fait patienté😉 Voici une petite vidéo pour cette fin de semaine🎥⛵️ La prochaine sera sur le passage du Cap de Bonne-Espérance... puis la traversée de Cap Town à Lüderitz, mais là, il vous faudra attendre un petit peu, vu le prix des Giga en Namibie😅 ✍️ En guise de rémission musculaire, nous sommes choyés, nos amis Beaty et Ken, désappointés que nous n’ayons pas pu faire la route des vins avec le lock down, nous invitent à passer la journée à Stellenbosh, terroir viticole de l’Afrique du Sud. Et bien évidemment, nous n’y allons pas uniquement pour contempler les coteaux et visiter les domaines ! Le but de la sortie est de tester d’où le nom, « wine tasting ». Tout un programme que nos amphitryons ont organisé très judicieusement dans trois vignobles bien différents, passant du plus moderne au plus authentique. Leur point commun, les huguenots, car si tous ont leurs propres particularités, les cépages ont tous été importé dans les années 1600 par les huguenots venus de France. Cette séance fort agréable de dégustation nous a fait oublier les commandes de Black Lion, qui sont restées à la charge de notre mécano pour la journée. Rétablies dans le sens de la marche, nous pouvons enfin dater notre départ qui se précise pour la fin de semaine ! Les préparatifs s’accélèrent, les missions, remettre en place les déflecteurs anti-retour d’eau sous la nacelle, replacer la voile préférée de Tchoupi, qui va demander une petite surveillance, non sur sa toile mais sur l’embout en roue libre qui semble s’électrolyser, faire les courses pour deux mois, abreuver notre lion, ranger nos vélos et ultimes vérifications sur nos moteurs ! Sur ce dernier point, soyons clair ! Ce n’est surtout pas parce que l’on fait faire le travail par un « professionnel » que l’on peut, les yeux fermés, faire confiance surtout quand celui-ci ne contrôle pas le boulot de son équipe ! En témoigne toutes les négligences comptabilisées au carénage, plus des durites mal positionnées pouvant fondre sous l’effet de la chaleur et un câble d’embrayage défectueux pas changé ! Au total, huit erreurs ! Sans vouloir faire ma râleuse, il me semble que pour des « professionnels », cela fait beaucoup de méfait pour que cela soit que de l’étourderie !

What do we do all day? Do we EVER get bored? HA - here is a quick update on what we have been doing for the past two weeks at the FKG dock while awaiting the installation of our fabricated pieces, solar arch and scuba tank/liferaft. Every day is busy. We are either working on projects or walking the short distance to the chandleries looking for parts or both, simultaneously! HA. Some projects we find and plan; other projects find us and become the new plan. Some projects are beyond our capability and others we struggle through them to victory on the other side. It feels great accomplishing these kinds of things and every day, our confidence grows. North Sails teamed up with professional navigator, Campbell Field, to help you prepare for the much-anticipated Rolex Fastnet Race, organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club. Over 400 yachts will set off from the Royal Yacht Squadron start line on the 8th of August 2021 to compete in the Rolex Fastnet Race, organized by the Royal Ocean Racing Club. With a finish in Cherbourg, France, the route now totals 696 nm, adding 90 nm (15%) to the previous course and presenting new challenges for both crews and navigators. North Sails has teamed up with professional navigator, Campbell Field, to help you prepare for this much-anticipated yacht race. Campbell has run route optimizations based on 10 years of weather data about windspeeds and angles on this new race course. Analyzing this information, alongside your IRC rating and sail inventory, is the best way to improve your performance. A new course brings new opportunities, but identifying areas to improve will vary with boat design and your existing inventory. To optimize your sails for your IRC rating, first, we need to answer a few questions. What are the 2021 rating updates? Are there any free gains you could make, or should you increase your rating to improve a weakness in your current inventory? By combining Campbell’s routing data with your knowledge of your boat, North experts Pete Redmond and Ronan Grealish will help you figure out the best strategy for this longer course.
