Welcome to the 16th of Season 2 It's all about where you put your probe. This week we finally get to do a proper ultrasonic metal thickness test using the Olympus 38DL! NDT or Non Destructive testing is a term which covers a number of methods of testing which do not cause damage to the thing which is being tested. We have our own Ultrasonic Thickness Tester which is a Panametric DL25 but to use that we need to expose some metal and test by placing the probe directly in the exposed steel. The amazing thing about the DL38 is that it will read through paint and even through epoxy fairing to an extent. But it only reads that exact spot so vital inspection of the steel is still a crucial part of the process. We have now checked the entire hull, from a few inches above the waterline, right down to the underneath of the keel, and along the entire length of the hull using the DL38 and we're super happy. We know the areas we need to focus on and having done this we are confident there are unlikely to be any major nasty surprises down the line. We're still going to wet blast the entire hull from the waterline down later in the spring, but for that we need a few days good weather so we can treat and paint the metal straight away. We're doing the major welding jobs first so the new and old steel will all get blasted to the same texture and "key" making for better paint coating adhesion globally. With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef... We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace as we have just had our first baby, born in Malaysia! Now completing our second major refit, Nandji is ready for the world when the world is ready for us!!! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! Les premiers jours à quai apportent bien souvent une sensation de sécurité, ce qui pour notre part fût le cas à notre arrivée à Simon’s Town, s’ajoute à cette tranquillité d’esprits de ne pas chasser sur notre ancre ou nous soucier de la météo, les commodités d’être en marina, mais bien vite, la perception de ces atouts s’altère, faisant place à une sorte d’enfermement avec besoin irrésistible de larguer les amarres ! Et quand ce point de non-retour est atteint, il est temps de bouger et la météo est alors notre allier… J-1, le départ est confirmé pour samedi aux aurores, première étape importante qui va nous faire passer le Cap de Bonne Esperance avant la suivante, tout aussi importante mais plus bureaucratique qui va officialiser notre appareillage pour la Namibie. En attendant, les dernières tâches de notre longue liste qui s’apparente bien à celle d’un grand départ se terminent. Blacky fait grincer ses liens au ponton, son impatience est tangible, la nôtre est palpable ! 13 février 2021, il est le légendaire Cap, celui des tempêtes, le mythique symbole qui, pour la deuxième fois va marquer nos mémoires, nous aurions pu, égoïstement, le repasser seuls mais l’exceptionnel de l’évènement favorise le partage et dans l’enthousiasme, nous avons proposé à deux de nos bananas de vivre cet instant avec nous. La nitescence du petit jour mêlées à notre excitation apporte de la splendeur ! Les premiers rayonnements font vermillonner False Bay que l’on quitte après plus de cinq semaines et comme l’avait prévu mon capitaine, nous avançons aux moteurs. La combinaison léger vent-courant provoque chez nos invités quelques troubles stomacaux que nous avons bien l’intention de soulager avec un petit verre de rhum pour sacrer le singulier passage, mais avant, le Cap Point et son phare fièrement érigé nous entraîne aux pauses photos ! Une certaine allégresse accompagne notre fierté de doubler une seconde fois, sept après, ce roc ! Ce pic ! Cette péninsule ! Que dis-je, ce Cap ! Nous sommes heureux ! Cette journée est magique, des jets de baleines n’arrêtent pas de nous prévenir de leur présence et finalement, heureusement que nos verres de célébration étaient petits, sinon, nos visions auraient très bien pu être prisent pour des divagations douteuses, mais nous avons les preuves en images ! Un double horizon, des bateaux à l’envers et même un voilier qui disparait ! Nous avions déjà observé ces phénomènes optiques fascinants, il y a quelques années. La déviation des faisceaux lumineux par des superpositions de couches d'air de températures différentes donne alors l'impression que l'objet que l'on regarde est à un endroit autre que son réel emplacement, et déforme l'image que l'on observe. Ce n'est en rien une illusion d'optique, ni une hallucination puisqu'il est possible de les photographier (l'image est donc réelle), ce sont des mirages ! Et il en existe plusieurs formes, en fonction du profil de la température de l'air. Ceux dit effet hillingar qui rendent l'horizon plat ou légèrement concave vers le haut, ceux-là sont causés par une inversion de température modérée, uniforme et étendue et ceux dit, effet hafgerdingar qui font apparaître des pointes sur les objets distants et à l'horizon, causés eux par de fortes inversions de température non uniformes. Ces mirages complexes sont traditionnellement appelés Fata Morgana, la fée Morgane. Le brouillard ajouté à ces fantomatiques aberrations et il ne nous manquait plus que le Black Perle du Capitaine Jacques Sparoe pour parfaire à merveille cette mystérieuse navigation ! Ancrés à Grandger Bay, nous nous donnons deux jours pour clore notre séjour Sud-africain, le premier étant consacré à faire un test Covid, indispensable maintenant pour débarquer en Namibie et le second à effectuer notre clereance de sortie du pays. Et là, pourquoi faut-il qu’une fois sur trois les formalités soient interminables ? Tout simplement parce que la plupart du temps, rien n’est fait pour simplifier la vie aux voyageurs. Pourvus de notre document certifié par la marina de Simon’s town, nous partions confiants visiter les quatre bureaux officiellement désigner pour une sortie conforme. Le Royal Cape Yacht Club, nous octroyant un original précisant que nous sommes bien au mouillage, s’en suit le Port autonome qui récupère ce papier et nous en fournit un autre pour l’immigration, laquelle devient suite logique à nos démarches. Et c’est là que les choses se complique devant un officier très peu arrangeant et une gradée fort désagréable que l’uniforme oblige certainement à l’autorité ! Pour plaire à ces gratte-papiers, nous devons refaire faire une attestation par Le Royal Cape Yacht Club et une, par la marina du Waterfront ! De là, après avoir remplis un dossier de 10 pages, nous avons droit à notre tampon sur nos passeports et pouvons enfin conclure toute cette mascarade par l’office des douanes qui se résume à ...

I went to jail on my 23rd birthday. Where did I go so wrong? We left at sparrow fart out of Coffs Harbour towards Trial Bay. Of course, we don't have any instruments working. All good though, we do it the old fashioned way, counting our knots and checking the depth with sticks. We are eager to check out the 19th Century jail that sits on the headland of Trial Bay. In this video we are in the marina puerto Lucia and check in to the country.
