#125 ✍️28 novembre, dix jours que je n’ai pas bougé du bateau ! Il était temps, je me sens enfin mieux. On approche du soulagement total et pour fêter ça, mon capitaine m’amène au restaurant à l’anse à l’âne. Le coin n’a pas vraiment changé depuis 27 ans. Nous y habitions lorsque nous nous sommes rencontrés. D’ici, une navette maritime va pouvoir nous conduire à Fort de France pour mon dernier rendez-vous. Et en guise de gala de fin de séjour nous avons l’honneur d’être présent pour l’arrivée de plusieurs class 40. Ultime, Imoca, Multi, un panel fabuleux de bateaux hors-normes, splendides et performants. Ça nous donnerait presque des idées de course sur notre Black Lion, surtout quand Primonial le Multi50 et Arkema l’Ocean Fifty de la compétition, nous frôlent gracieusement ! Et pourquoi pas Blacky à la course du rhum 2022 ! Entrains dans notre délire, nous filons de nouveau vers Saint Pierre. Cette fois c’est validé, nous quittons la Martinique. D’autant qu’une grève générale met le pays au ralentit et nos derniers colis risquent fort de prendre pas mal de retard. Nous trouverons une solution pour nous les faire parvenir lors d’une prochaine escale. Une superbe lumière radie la perle des Antilles. Nous nous sentons de nouveau libres, comme ces chevaux qui galopent sur la plage de sable noir ! Nous redevenons maîtres de nos choix, maestros de nos vies, désenchainés de toutes contraintes. With only 6 weeks left before our planned departure date - leaving South Africa for our trans Atlantic crossing - we still have so much to do. We are really getting down to mostly aesthetic projects now but as we tick jobs off of our "to-do" list, we seem to add so many more. We've also had an unexpected huge adjustment to make regarding Cleo, our much loved boat cat, and our hearts are broken 💔 Cleo joined our crew 2 years ago and has become an integral part of the family. It was during the pandemic's first hard lockdown period that Cleo adopted us. She lived at the Club Mykonos Resort along with a few other feral cats. Cleo, was clearly not a true feral. She is tame and loving (always on her terms😉) and enjoys company when it suits her. When the hard lockdown was announced, we were the only people living on a boat in the Marina. As a result of the lockdown, the restaurants, shops and offices were all closed. These were the primary source of food for the ferals and whilst Club Mykonos carried on with a basic feeding scheme, we would supplement their daily food with fresh fish that we caught in the marina. It was during this time that Cleo came down and moved onto the boat. When the restrictions had been relaxed enough for us to leave the resort, Cleo had become a part of the family and clearly wasn't going anywhere of her own accord. She had warm, dry place to live, food on demand and a group of human servants. We didn't have the heart to put her back out in the marina to fend for herself again so asked if she could stay with us and become a traveling cat? They agreed, saying that it was fine and said that if it didn't work out - she would be welcomed back. She seemed to settle in well when we moved from a dock mooring at the resort to a mooring ball at Saldanha Bay Yacht Club across the bay. Moving to a place where we were now surrounded by water and not on a dock where she could jump on and off of the boat whenever she wanted to, was bound to be a huge adjustment for her. We were real 'helicopter parents' - always aware of her every move, her eating and ablution habits and even her moods. More recently we noticed that she had started eating less, was hibernating down in the cabins more and had really aged quite significantly. We obviously don't know her true aged but the vet says she is definitely a teenager. She also developed what we thought could be a bladder infection so we took her to the vet and after some testing, were told that she is in early stage kidney failure. She would need to go onto specialised renal food but more importantly she needed to be removed from what the vet saw as a stressful environment. We hadn't seen that this life was 'stressful' to her, she seemed happy enough and had put everything down to age. He also said that if we didn't make these changes he felt she should be put to sleep as her condition would continue to deteriorate. This was obviously NOT even a consideration!! Anyone that has ever worked in animal rescue will know that homing an ageing animals, especially with fancy dietary requirements is a near impossibility, and even more so in the middle of a pandemic when people are struggling already. This news threw us into a real panic, wondering what we could do that would be best for Cleo. I decided to call Liezl, a lady from Mykonos Resort, who had always loved Cleo and see if there was any way in the world that they would take her back. We were really panicked about our situation and thought it was a long shot now, given the situation, that they would take her back and be able to fulfil her dietary and veterinary requirements. Liezl said to give her 24hours and she jumped into action. By the next day we got word that the Mykonos management had agreed to take her back, committed to seeing to her every need and she would become Liezl's office kitty. Whilst it broke our hearts to have to give her up, we knew that the alternative was not an option, she still has too much life in her for that. We will be forever grateful to Liezl and Club Mykonos for taking Cleo back with the commitment to seeing to her needs whilst she see's out the rest of her life. In a way, its been a small relief because doing research regarding veterinary care and dietary requirements in the areas we will be visiting. The islands generally have very little choice in pet food and in some places veterinary care is none existent. We had been worried about having a rapidly aging cat on board, that we would not be able to get the correct care for if required. Cleo moved over to Club Mykonos about 2 weeks ago after finishing up her antibiotics. When we took her back, it was like she had never been away, she knew exactly where she was and seemed settled immediately. We have visited a few times already, when we pick her up for cuddles she always smells like perfume so we know she is getting plenty of love and cuddles. Cleo will always be a much loved and cherished part of our boat-life story 💜

After an impressive start to the Cabbage Tree Island race on Friday, when Christian Beck’s Law Connect led the fleet out of Sydney Harbour on a gloomy Friday evening, the 100 footer held the lead to Cabbage Tree Island and back at an average 11.4 knots, finishing at 10.20am on Saturday morning. Boat Captain Ty Oxley and helmsman Tony Mutter were evidently very pleased with the performance of the new bowsprit and sails.

After crossing the Panama Canal we were eager to get back to anchor life - so we headed straight for the quiet, mostly uninhabited Las Perlas islands or Pearl Islands. These islands are the playgrounds for the wealthy and famous. The magnificence of the Pearl Islands is most evident in the pristine natural beauty, abounding marine life and rich history of its 200 plus islands and islets. The rich history of the Pearl Islands is intriguing. They have hosted such pirates and explorers as Sir Francis Drake, Henry Morgan and Balboa. At one point in history, the Archipelago of Las Perlas was famous for its Pearls. Its most famous gem is a 31-carat, 400-year-old Peregrine pearl, now owned by Elizabeth Taylor. Its previous owners included the Queen of Spain, a French Emperor and an English Queen. The island of Contadora is the most developed and frequented island in the Las Perlas archipelago. Contadora was developed in the 1960s into an exclusive get away for the rich and famous. John Wayne, Elisabeth Taylor, Christian Dior, Julio Iglesias, the Shah of Persia, Jimmy Carter as well as others decided to make it their home. Some of them stayed only for a few days, some of them for years. We loved cruising around Contadora looking at the huge homes that mostly sat empty waiting for their owners to use them a couple times a year. We also visited the popular anchorage of Isla Chapira. This is only a 1 hour sail from Contadora, but a whole different world. This island and its close neighbour Isla Mogo Mogo are completely uninhabited. They have the most incredible beaches and scenery. Mogo Mogo has become famous as it is the set for the television series Survivor. Because of their seclusion and beauty many motorboat charters will come out to Isla Chapira from Panama City for the day. Allowing their guests to relax in complete luxury on the deserted beaches. We were lucky enough to get to experience these islands when there was no one there. That truely is the beauty of cruising, we can be in places outside of the usual peak times. After a few days at anchor we were joined by our friends Y Knot, who had now transited the Canal and were eager to relax. We spent the days lounging on the beach, playing and catching up. Sadly whilst navigation around Isla Del Rey Y Knot's rudder hit an unmarked rock. This is the disadvantage with cruising in this area. Electronic navigation charts are non existent, so you have to rely on a small guide book to estimate your position. Because of the rock we needed to get Y Knot back to the mainland to check for damage. The sail back to Panama City was an exciting one. We had numerous jumping stingrays and loads of fish which we could see from the decks of the boat. We also passed a lot of fishing boats which indicated how prolific the fishing in this part of the world is. Once in Las Brisas we settled down to boat jobs and exploring the city. The cruise is slowly coming to an end.... The little dock at Aubrey Island was perfect! Out of the wind, peaceful, and perfect - although taking Chloe for her last washroom break was interesting because there are a lot of rocks to negotiate as you leave the dock, and it was dark! I think puppy-dog felt that it wasn't worth taking a long walk, so she went to the end of the dock, up one or two rocks to a flat place, did her business, and turned right around to go back on board! The next day, we decided to try Camelot Island - several friends had docked there in the past and mentioned how good it was, and they were certainly correct! After a short cruise from Aubrey, we docked at Camelot and were immediately impressed - new docks, nice and wide, great facilities. And the Island is big enough to really feel as though you're exploring something. It was a great spot! This took place on 30 September, which was the first official Day of Truth and Reconciliation. It's an acknowledgement of our Canadian Government's role in the Residential School program - a policy of cultural genocide, removing indigenous peoples from their culture and homes. The very real scars are evident today, since the program only stopped a few decades ago. Jacqueline and I spent time discussing Residential Schools, the European settler/colonist relationship with indigenous peoples, and how we very literally walked in the footsteps of thousands of people over thousands of years. I'll talk about this day in another episode. But it was important to Reflect.

We were just talking with Britta and Ralf about catching drones on boats. So here is a short video showing the design we came up with before leaving Australia to pick up our new Garcia Exploration 45 in Cherbourg last year. I wanted the design to be light and compact, to be easily assembled onto and removed from the Mavic 2, to involve no modification to the Mavic and cause no damage, to allow very safe catching and very secure capture for the drone, with retrieval possible using an extension pole if necessary. This design also allows the pilot to fly to the retrieval point using normal, familiar, forward flight commands. Just aim for the catcher’s head and the drone will be perfectly positioned for instant capture, with no chance of escape, no injuries and no damage. The method for the pilot is to first input a slow, steady forward speed and hold that. Aiming is done by adjusting the rate of descent, thereby involving only one variable. Once the drone is caught by the Velcro landing platform the catcher holds it still and the pilot commands it to descend. The drone senses that it can’t descend and shuts off the motors, without any fuss. 🙂 Regards from Rick and Carolyn.
