We set out on an overnight passage from Borkum to Vlieland on the North Sea with a less-than-perfect weather window since the prospects didn't show any shift for the following week. It was a challenging sail as the winds turned against us halfway to our destination, causing us to have to tack back & forth and making Liv very sea sick. We were looking forward to exploring Vlieland - labeled a hidden gem in the Wadden Sea - the farthest out Dutch Island with much greenery, 12km worth of some of the most beautiful beaches in the Netherlands on the North side and a very quaint town in the middle of the island. Also, the island is known for it's lack of cars and tradition of biking. Biking trails are spread throughout the island through forests, sand dunes and neighborhoods. Biking around the island was the highlight of our visit to Vlieland! More Boat Projects! We have final made it to our new home in Virginia and boy was that shakedown cruise a doozy. We have discovered a whole “boat” load of new boat projects to do. But as they say, your project list never ends. To list off a few items we are starting with: Exhaust hose, alternator, 2 seacocks, replace shore power cords (didn’t know that one before we docked) a haul out with bottom job and all the plumbing that goes with it. We thought we were close to done when we left South Carolina…. but boy were we wrong. It was so nice to have the time on anchor and explore new things every day but there is something a bit comforting about being tied up to the dock as well. So far Urbanna, VA has been a warm welcome like a hug from your favorite aunt. We couldn’t have picked a better place if we tried. Oh, did I mention we weren’t supposed to be here, just happened that way. Crazy how things work out. The small farming village of Veron had been a quiet, peaceful place for as long as anyone could remember. While the locals made enough money to get by, there was never quite enough to make a real difference in their lives. That all changed one day when the villagers were out harvesting their rice crop and noticed something strange in the paddy - glints of gold! Word quickly spread throughout the village that they had discovered gold in their paddy and soon, everyone was abuzz with excitement over this newfound wealth. The elders of Veron wasted no time in organizing an small operation on the properly extract the gold with a home built dredge which it was very basic and a lot of gold was being lost . The first two hours turned up nearly an ounce of gold.Everyone cheered with jubilation; finally, here was something that would change their fortunes for good!
